I have a honey pot with one of those that somebody gave me as a gift.
I tried to use it one time to be fancy when I made biscuits, and put it in the middle of the table during dinner. At first people tried to use it, but it was such a fucking pain in the ass, eventually they just stopped trying to be nice about it used a spoon to get the honey bc wtf is the point?
Well it does keep the honey not dripping if rotated, and works nicely if the honey is applied to hot water (as if you don’t, the honey will never leave those stripey grooves).
All of this can be said about a spoon too, though.

I grew up in America and I saw them often enough. They must have grown up in Sucksville.
Until reading the comments, I didn’t know people actually owned these. I thought it was supposed to look like the stripes of a bee on a stick as a gimmick to sell. But according to the comments, it’s designed that way so you can twirl it if your honey container is far away from where you want to spread the honey to keep from dripping everywhere.
I’ve never seen one of these in real life, whether at home or traveling. I’ve been to almost all 50 states and 10 other countries.

As opposed to moving the container or what you want the honey on to be closer together.
I have seen these before, but I’ve never seen them for anything other than honey. No one has a gravy twirler or a pancake syrup twirler.

I’ve wondered the same as OP and never saw one in real life.
Probably it’s a regional thing, like how in some countries (as I recently discovered) they don’t know what a cheese slicer is and just butcher cheese with a knife.
Of course you had to be Dutch. I swear, all my Dutch friends have like 3 of those an a couple of those electric grills with mini pans for melting cheese below
In all fairness, the slicer isn’t even useful for all cheeses. It’s convenient for Edam and similar ones though.

So once upon a time, you actually got honey at the market replenishing your pot, rather than buying jars in the supermarket.
This thing was always in the pot, and you did not use a spoon to get your honey, it works better than a spoon and you just leave it in the pot.
Today americans probably bleach their jars, spoons and bees, but honey is surprisingly shelf stable, having a pot with a little hole with this little plunger sticking out is fine really.

You keep slowly rotating it as you move it from the honey to whatever you’re going to put the honey in so the viscous liquid essentially “orbits” this thing instead of dripping onto your countertop. Then when over the target you stop rotating and let it pour off.
Or you could use a teaspoon.
Why, when this thing makes it easier? Unless you have a spoon with a round handle.
Sure, and that general purpose tool works fine. This is just the tool specifically designed for honey. It’s not necessary, just useful.

We have one. A small one that came with this little countertop ceramic honey pot we found at a pottery shop. We actually tried using it, but the ants got to the literal honey pot very quickly.

Somehow ended up with one of these in my house as a kid. Nobody had bought it, my parents were avowed agaisnt them because they find them hard to use… must have been a gift from the honey fairy. Anyway, I insisted on actually trying to use it one time.
It’s not useful. It doesn’t do anything that a spoon doesn’t do.
You might argue that it spreads the honey in cute little criss cross patterns but honey is either so runny that it all pools together on the toast/cake it’s applied to, or is so viscuous that it doesn’t do any of that stuff and needs to be spread with a knife.
Honeydippers might be a medieval “emperor’s new clothes” style hoax.
From other comments, I think it’s specifically for getting runny honey into tea. A spoon can do that and a lot more, but doesn’t look so cool and specialized. I use a knife for applying to bread.
You can buy them in every cutlery section in my country. But it’s kind of useless, I’m not sure why this is the design that is associated with honey. A spoon works better.
You can rotate this as it’s dripping to manage the flow due to grooves which you can’t do with a spoon.

I’ve got 3 of those at home (actually got one as a gift last week) but we don’t use it because the open honey jar attracts ants. So we use spoons. I do like it though.
Why would this tool necessitate leaving the honey jar open at all times?
The hole for the tool (I actually don’t know the proper name) is small enough for ants to get through.

it’s the easiest tool to use to get the honey out of the jar and into your mug for tea. i got mine at the farmer’s market because local honey is thicker than store honey, but even stores that sell local honey don’t sell these. highly recommend one if you’ve never seen one. it makes making tea so much easier
You know they have invented the thing called teaspoon, it makes it very easy to get the honey out of the jar and into your mug of tea. Try it and you’ll be amazed. I’m sure you can find it at a some farmers market too.
i have and that’s what i’m comparing against. thank you for your unconstructive input. with the teaspoon you can’t twist it to break a run before putting it in your mug and adding the hot water. so the teaspoon ends up being messier.

Y’know they sell honey in squeezable bottles like ketchup and other condiments, right? This stupid wooden barrel on a stick solution seems like a recipe for a sticky mess. Also, do you just leave it in the jar, making it impossible to put the lid back on? Take it out, covered in honey, and wash it for later?

You should have more disdain for that low quality ass honey in a squeeze bottle. You should try local honey, it’ll change your life and then you’ll find yourself buying these dumbass barrels on a stick.

Sure, they exist, but it’s really hard to find real honey in a squeeze bottle. And it would probably suck, real honey is far thicker.
the honey that comes in the squeezable bottles is lower quality and the bottles themselves are wasteful. i’d rather pay a little extra, get honey from a beekeeper, know my local agriculture is being pollinated by a local beekeeper, and deal with a little piece of wood i have to rinse a little bit.

Went to a wedding shower that was nature themed awhile back and the attendance prize was a small jar of local honey with one of these attached. I’ve never used one so I am curious to give it a try.
