- Comment on What do you like/dislike about lemmy? 2 weeks ago:
It takes some time to block out stuff to make Lemmy usable. So much anime, bots and dumb American politics.
It’s nice there are a bunch of apps for Lemmy, but using it without an app is not very welcoming. It needs a lot of improvement (e.g. manually compose urls to subscribe to communities on other servers).
- Comment on Why did my bus driver want me to not pay the fare and instead just "TAKE A SEAT!!!" 1 month ago:
Because they don’t have change?
Happened to me before. The ATM only gives out 20s but the driver only wants small coins, only cash is accepted.
It happened in several countries and it’s still a mystery to me how you’re supposed to get small change when you’re fresh off the airplane or something (or why they don’t just take card).
- Comment on Why do radio stations all seem to go on commercial at the same time? 2 months ago:
I remember always switching to another channel when ads came up, but later that became impossible because they all started ads at the same time. So it seems to be on purpose to prevent people from switching channels. This was in the Netherlands, though I haven’t listened to radio anymore since Napster came out.
- Comment on Is it actually very common for people to have violent sadistic fantasies, possibly involving actual people in their lives? 2 months ago:
It’s normal to get such weird brainfarts, like the call of the void or imagining murder or other bad things, just like when a song suddenly gets stuck in your head. A healthy person thinks “wtf brain?” but when you start to think “that’s a great idea I want to act on”, maybe that’s not completely normal.

“Just say you did it or we’ll kill you” after years of torture so there doesn’t have to be a trial. Great work convincing us you got the right guys.
- Comment on What are some things you can do to maintain your teeth when you don't have health insurance and can't afford dental care? 3 months ago:
My yearly dental works always cost a fortune, but my teeth are great now, since:
- I got an electric brush and floss sticks;
- I now drink coffee without sugar (you’ll get used to it pretty quickly);
- I almost completely stopped drinking sugary drinks (mostly bubbly water now, boycotting evil companies and being poor help).

- Comment on Moms, I you were struggling with your child in public and a man offered to help, would you let him and why? 3 months ago:
Well Americans are kind of known for not keeping to themselves and being chatty with strangers, when abroad at least. Even personal questions etc. So it’s strange to draw the line at helping others.
- Comment on Moms, I you were struggling with your child in public and a man offered to help, would you let him and why? 3 months ago:
What a strange and sexist question. I’ve been asked by random mothers to carry their buggy with kid up the stairs, off the train etc. before. If I would speak the local language where I live, I probably would’ve offered. Judging by the comments here, I’m glad I didn’t make that mistake.
- Comment on When was the last time you made Jello? 4 months ago:
Never. Had to Google what it even is. I had something similar once as a child.
- Comment on I genuinely feel like I wouldn't live that differently even if I suddenly became ultra-wealthy. Am I kidding myself? 4 months ago:
If you’re not a wage slave and have a bigger home, think of all the hobbies and interests you can pursue, new things to learn, time to meet people and space to host them, charity work… And you have the energy for things that a job would drain from you otherwise. I think life would be drastically different.
- Comment on Is it generally safe to walk through a field of cows? 4 months ago:
Where would you come across a bull though? I’ve never seen one in a field with cows.
- Comment on Solving CAPTCHA for 'Bicycle' -- Include Rider? 5 months ago:
I don’t include the rider. More confusing are stairs and crosswalks: where do they start and end? Often, there is no crosswalk on the picture but you have to select other road markings to continue. So it doesn’t really matter.

Well, they’re not wrong. If I had known I’d be in the same place after 10 years, I would’ve made myself more comfortable.
- Comment on Which is the best Lemmy app for mobile? 6 months ago:
Out of the ones I’ve tried (Jerboa, Connect, Thunder), I think Thunder is best (after a little config) : github.com/thunder-app/thunder/releases
- Comment on As a long-time user hearing YouTube wants to play ads when I pause a video 6 months ago:
I must be out of touch.
I didn’t think I’d need an app to visit YouTube.
- Comment on As a long-time user hearing YouTube wants to play ads when I pause a video 6 months ago:
Tbf the only reason I know that YouTube has paid subscriptions is because of threads like this one, so it doesn’t seem like they’re really pushing their paid service.
Maybe they’re only targeting people who, for some reason, don’t block ads, and that’s why I’m unaware, but they should offer a little more than the things you can get for free already (no ads, downloading) if they want to draw in the adblocker crowd too.
Now people will start to google what’s up with all those ads and end up installing uBlock.
- Comment on As a long-time user hearing YouTube wants to play ads when I pause a video 6 months ago:
I accidentally watched a YouTube video on a browser without blocking. It started with an ad. I thought I’d just endure it this time. Then another ad. OK, just this time then. Suddenly, another ad in the middle of the video. I gave up. Who’d have the patience to sit through this?
Then there’s Google’s habit of completely ignoring the browser’s language settings so I have to sit though ads I don’t even understand.
- Comment on They really want people to RTO 6 months ago:
Yeah I only got some cheap chair, but honestly the problem is less with the chair, more with how I sit.

🤷♂️
I have breakfast while I work in bed. It’s so much better. Then I switch between my chair and my bed throughout the day. Office chairs fuck up my back and I’m constantly tired at my age (since covid)

- Comment on Young adults are getting used to living on a financial cliff 8 months ago:
I may be somewhere in the middle. I see students around me traveling the world like it’s nothing, eating and drinking out all the time… Maybe they’re doing something right. I’m saving up half of my salary every month but for what? It’s never enough to own my own home and I’ll never retire anyway. Maybe having a little luxury right now instead of saving for an unknown isn’t that bad.
- Comment on I'm a US citizen, people in other countries, what do you think when you read stories like these about the US health care system? 8 months ago:
One thing that’s different out that there is no such thing as not being able to pay for health insurance. You are required by law to be insured. This also means the government mostly covers it for you if you can’t.
You may have to pay out of pocket for the first few hundred euros when something happens, but insurance covers the rest. There’s no way a person’s life savings would disappear overnight because of a medical issue. I’d rather die than pay what I sacrificed 30+ years to save up for.
- Comment on Young adults set an earlier bedtime as they navigate economic fatigue, wellness trends, and a loneliness epidemic 9 months ago:
(Paywall, can’t read – but) I spend over 8 hours per day working before I have time for cooking, shopping, cleaning etc. It’s around 9pm when my life begins. Who has time to sleep early?
- Comment on How do you find the mental fortitude to keep doing a job you don’t quite like due to the coworkers while you look for a new one even if you don’t know you are sure you’re going to quit? 9 months ago:
My colleagues also like to shun me, which shouldn’t be a problem working remotely, but all the people who come to the office and have connections just got their promotions. Working hard and being good at your job are just not as important as being loud and knowing people. I just had a short holiday and I just can’t get my motivation to work anymore since I’m back.
So I’ll just keep slacking off and look for other opportunities in the meantime or maybe they’ll fire me at some point and I’ll have some time to travel or something.

- Comment on I hate that I am become this person but: are delivery drivers just allowed to call and say 'please come and meet me' now? 11 months ago:
If there’s a delivery, they usually call so you have time to get dressed and get down (because it’s always easily in the morning). That’s normal for package delivery, at least. I’ve never ordered food though.

- Comment on Do any ATMs in Belgium support balance inquiries? 1 year ago:
As far as I know, European banks never give you the option for balance inquiry. ATMs in e.g. Asia may give the option but it won’t work with a European bank card.
