Twitch continues to deteriorate as a platform because what do you mean I can’t TAB OUT TO MY SECOND MONITOR DURING THE AD BREAK
I NEED TO FOCUS THE TAB AND THE WINDOW FOR THE AD TO PLAY???
Twitch: "Hey, come back! This commercial break can't play while you're away."

4chan greentext
GreyEyedGhost@piefed.ca 2 weeks ago
It’s a greentext from 2013 apparently. It can be found on reddit, and I’ve seen it here, but I doubt I could find it.

Pretty sure it’s from Futurama.

It’s from Demolition Man. An 80s sci-fi/action movie.

If it is publicly-traded, it will be enshittified. This is an ironclad, inviolable law.

Well, thank goodness Elon Musk took Twitter private, amirite?
humorlessrepost@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Since it’s private, Elon could be content with a steady (adjusted for inflation) annual profit, which would allow him to make decisions that are good for the long-term health of the company.
He just sucks.
If it were public, he wouldn’t even have the option to not suck.

TODAY, on BLACK MIRROR EPISODES in Real LIFE
I kid you not, there’s this BM episode where they train on indoor bikes and sleep in pods and have to watch the ad on the screen lest it screeches at them
FUCK YOU TWITCH 🤗💖

Was an episode of Max Headroom where it was illegal to own an off-switch for your television.
40 years earlier, and still ahead of its time.
GreyEyedGhost@piefed.ca 2 weeks ago
It was referenced in every episode, but one episode was about the people who had one.
trollercoaster@sh.itjust.works 2 weeks ago
Every dystopic shit that eventually happens in real life has been featured in a BM episode.
I am starting to suspect that either the authors of BM know something we don’t, or that some people are treating BM as some kind of an instruction manual.

shneancy@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
unfortunately, when you get good sci-fi writers who use the medium to examine social tendencies & human psychology, then try to draw out a possible conclusion whilst also having the audience take a step back by introducing a fantastical element… you have a team of people who will predict the future, despite really not wanting to

Reminder that Sony has patented technology to force viewers into saying a certain phrase in order to continue past an advertisement. Sure, it sounds dystopian, but just look at how happy the little consumer looks in their patent image!
moonshadow@slrpnk.net 2 weeks ago
Treczoks@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Some patents are a crime against humanity.
invertedspear@lemmy.zip 2 weeks ago
Fingers crossed this is a patent intended to prevent others from ever stooping to such evil, but it’s not like Sony has been clean when it comes to this kind of shit.
joyjoy@lemmy.zip 2 weeks ago
Pay attention, because there will be a test.
Pringles@sopuli.xyz 2 weeks ago
If it would allow you to end the commercial early, it would kind of be genius. “Watch this 2 minute ad or say ‘I love McDonald’s’ to immediately continue watching” is something that definitely would work. It would get these phrases or slogans ingrained while providing a better viewing experience.
Don’t get me wrong, I would hate it as much as
anyoneany other lemmy user. However from a marketing perspective it’s pretty solid while a significant percentage of the viewership would not only participate, but laud it as a good solution to skip the forced commercials.yermaw@sh.itjust.works 2 weeks ago
It sounds like fun.
Then the next wave is that the feature length advert will play. You can see the shortened version by shouting I LOVE MCDONALDS. Or you can skip entirely by showing the Camera the New McFood Deluxe and eating it.
These motherfuckers do not know the meaning of the words “dystopian hellscape”. There is no such thing as too much, too far, too invasive, too insidious. There is only “so what’s next for our marketing department?”
YourMomsTrashman@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago

UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago

I need everyone to look at what you can do with HTML5 “game engines”. You want mouse poisiton? You want to know if the mouse is in on the page or not? Internet speed? Audio card codec?
If a 13 years old using the free version of construct3 can do it, capitalism can do it.
humorlessrepost@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
This is why browser games don’t tend to work in Librewolf. Also why I use Librewolf.
1984@lemmy.today 2 weeks ago
You must be using one of those browsers from an ad company.
Astertheprince@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 weeks ago
There aren’t really any others though, every browser these days is made by a company with corporate interests in mind, either their own, or someone paying them.
Treczoks@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
“Avoid minimizing or muting for a better experience” Wow, this is beyond nuts.
If i was a Twitch user, i’d dump this right now.

Retro_unlimited@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Twitch is a SOCIAL website, you chat with the streamer and they chat back. All these ads do is interrupt the conversation and it’s SICK to me. It ruins the entire experience. I don’t mind the pop up small ads, but the full screen ads with sound just trashed the entire conversation. Always seems to happen when I ask a streamer a question then BAM 6 full screen ads when the streamer starts to answer me. No, I’m not paying for turbo or a sub, I’m f*ing broke right now.

Use this extension: addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/…/ttv-lol-pro/
Run your own proxy that supports tons of VPNs: github.com/qdm12/gluetun
Set the VPN location to a country that doesn’t or can’t get ads (Costa Rica is a good one since they’re in the test region for 2k streaming).
Set the extension to use the proxy.
No more Twitch ads.
REDACTED@infosec.pub 2 weeks ago
I feel like viewing twitch on your second monitor is quite common. That window is almost always going to be out of focus. What a shitty short-sighted system
Jack_Burton@lemmy.ca 2 weeks ago
Soon enough social apps will use your selfie cam to track your eyes. Ads will only play when your eyes are engaged and pause if you’re not looking at the screen. Oh boy.
Same with TVs, the built in camera will see who’s watching, and Netflix, etc, will stop streaming when it sees 5 people watching when your account is only set for 4. Either one person leaves the room or you upgrade to continue watching.
iMastari@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
I dropped them like a bad habit when they first implemented the advertisements. I have never looked back.

The best thing I ever installed was UBLOCK ORIGIN,the second best thing was Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) Privacy Badger. I have not seen or been interupted by an AD in a decade
Sprinks@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Copy/paste of the steps i have posted in a friend group discord.
Block Twitch Ads without pausing stream Will not work in Chrome
In Ublock Origin Dashboard
- My filters (tab) --> Add twitch.tv##+js(twitch-videoad)
- Select Apply
- Settings (tab) --> Scroll to bottom of page
- Check I am an advanced user
- Select the cog to the right of the text I am an advanced user
- At the bottom of the page, locate userResourcesLocation
- Change it from unset to raw.githubusercontent.com/…/vaft.user.js
- If there is already a URL: At the end of the existing URL, add a space and then the above link
The_Hideous_Orgalorg@sh.itjust.works 2 weeks ago
I don’t understand how anyone can use the Internet without ublock. I have before, and am about to again, change fuel stations due to them installing those stupid ad playing pumps.
Damarus@feddit.org 2 weeks ago
Yeah but uBlock can’t or at least doesn’t block Twitch ads, so that doesn’t really apply here.
rozodru@piefed.world 2 weeks ago
it does but with Twitch it’s a constant battle. you can go for days or weeks on end and it’ll work great then boom a few days to a week and it won’t work anymore until the maintainers figure out yet another way to circumvent twitch ads.
It just got to a point for me where I just stopped using twitch. I mean the site overall and the content/streamers have just gotten a lot worse in the past few years and there’s really nothing on there anymore worth watching.
Redacted@lemmy.zip 2 weeks ago
You can add a little string of text to ublock and itll work again. Havent seen an ad nonconsentually in years on there
ramasses@social.ozymandias.club 2 weeks ago
Theirs a script on github to block twitch ads, works flawlessly
https://github.com/pixeltris/TwitchAdSolutions
Occultist0178@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Of course it does, I have never seen an ad in Twitch, thus is it course in Firefox, don’t know how it works in Chrome with the messed up adblock system 🤷
SlyLycan@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 weeks ago
Those are so atrocious. I just found out the closest gas station near my house installed big ass screens on the pumps that are bigger than my largest tablet and have impressively loud speakers. The station previously didn’t have any video screens so when I passed by the screen to unscrew the gas cap, and it started blasting the ad I nearly jumped out of my skin.
I don’t have a clue where another gas station without the ad screens even is. Blegh 😮💨
Passerby6497@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
The ones around me have a big old mute button and I’ve gotten into the habit of hitting that button as gas starts to flow so I don’t hear more than a second or two of whatever garbage they’re playing
snooggums@piefed.world 2 weeks ago
The pumps around here in the middle state have all muted their ads or at least have the volumes turned way down. When I drive somewhere else they catch me off guard.
Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 weeks ago
must be expensive to have those screen, first time i saw those gas station “tvs” was during trumps 1st term, at least the news was playing a tthe time.
thebestaquaman@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Seeing those was one of the more dystopian experiences I had when visiting the US a while back. The entire concept was absolutely insane to me.
EldestMalk@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Some of the fuel pumps have a hidden mute option. The 2nd button from the top right usually mutes them for me.
The_Hideous_Orgalorg@sh.itjust.works 2 weeks ago
I’ve tried all the buttons with no luck. But also, I’m just going to vote with my wallet and stop doing business with them for doing stupid stuff like that.
anomnom@sh.itjust.works 2 weeks ago
Apparently car/house keys can fit into the speaker slots and kill the sound.
Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 weeks ago
it wont block twitch ads, they seed it to thier videos, so it somewhat unblockable. i heard its expensive, thats why google doesnt do it.
