- Comment on Why do people hate video games so much? 1 week ago:
I can see maybe the parent of a child seeing games as unproductive.
But as an adult it’s a good way to unwind like listening to good music or watching a movie. As long as it’s only for a few hours though, as games can go on and on and on. Some people over do it, and some people have even died from lack of food or breaks.
I really enjoy games, buy them whenever I see them at the thrift stores if I don’t already have the game. Now I have many thousands of games, and no worry about the game companies taking them away from me because these are physical.

I ran a 7 days to die server for a few years, fun to do missions with a lot of friends, and build bases and stuff.

Same here, game on sale for $3, but then I see it had $200 in DLC to play the complete game. Major turn off.

AI uses so much power just to give a slop answer, VS having an actual algorithm providing useful info for a fraction of power.
- Comment on Is gold investing a scam? 3 weeks ago:
I bought some gold a few years ago, the price has gone up quite a lot since. I invested in small little pieces recovered from a lake somewhere. I figured it’s easier to barter with a tiny piece than a huge coin or bar of gold. It’s only a small part of my portfolio. I decided to invest in a mix of stuff, as you never really know the future. A little bit of cryptos, gold, silver, bullets, canned foods, solar panels, batteries, rain catchment and containers, etc. I also worked on my survival skills, tool skills, crafting skills, etc. it’s a huge way to barter with people when you have skills they need. The biggest thing I invested in is raw land in the middle of nowhere. The land has an RV and working on systems to gather water, power, etc. 99% of the stuff will be solar powered, but we do have a diesel heater, it doesn’t use much fuel as we only use it when it’s really cold.
I think gold is just one of the many things needed to survive if things collapsed. If it’s even needed. It’s just one of those things that makes me feel better as an insurance / just in case. But I feel the other things I have done will make a bigger difference if it ever comes down to it.

The original Xbox? I think Those have a super capacitor that ends up leaking on the motherboard and should be replaced. I still didn’t get around to doing it on mine, but it’s on my mind that I need to do that.
- Comment on How I discovered a hidden microphone on a Chinese NanoKVM 3 weeks ago:
I was really sketched out with my BLI-KVM. I had a server that was off, when I booted it the bios was in Chinese. Although someone did say that motherboard had a flaw that would do that, I wasn’t Sure if it was the KVM or the motherboard, but still…

I live in the middle of nowhere where, you would be surprised how much work it is. Plus the long long trips to town for supplies.
- Comment on I hate how inescapable politics are on Lemmy, but ya know, at least nobody's constantly asking how I wipe my butt or pick up my dog's poop then completely ignoring me when I try to answer. 3 weeks ago:
I’m sorry to hear that. I had a friend in college born without eyes. I talked a lot with him about concepts like shapes and colors. He was able to tell how much battery the electric carts on campus had by the sound of the motor, it’s quite interesting. I guess you might have an easier time than someone that lost their vision. I now have a friend that went blind after a car accident, he gets a lot of help from neighbors. He try’s very hard to do things himself, but often needs help. I hope you have a good support network for the things you need in life.

Were you born sighted? Or did you go blind over time?
- Comment on Bracing for impact 5 weeks ago:
A few years ago I had a threadripper server, then I had to move. I planned it out to have a little low power NAS for traveling.
Now I live offgrid in an RV with some solar panels. My little NAS can be powered by 12V so I have it plugged into a cigarette lighter plug on my battery. It’s been working great so far, has docker so I have a bunch of stuff running on it now.

- Comment on ADVICE: Running out of storage 2 months ago:
1/2 to 3/4 of my drives are from server parts deals, only had one of them give me issues and I think the issue was the SATA cable I had. I have several servers.
They are used drives, but I only paid about $100-125 each. Keep watching their site and things go in and out of stock all the time. I wait until they have a good price.

Cheap RV living on YouTube is quite popular because people are choosing to live in their vehicles and the freedom to be anywhere.
When I moved, I choose to live in my car for several months. It’s not too bad.
- Comment on Are We Living in a Golden Age of Stupidity? - Slashdot 2 months ago:
I saw a YouTube video from a professor that explains how our brains need at least 15 minutes of nothing so it can be creative. Everyone now has a smart phone that takes that away from us. AI is just next level taking that away from us. It’s destroying all our minds.

- Comment on Steam payment headaches grow as PayPal is no longer usable for much of the world: Valve hopes to bring it back in the future, 'but the timeline is uncertain' 4 months ago:
Use a virtual card like the ones from privacy. You can select if it’s a one time payment or a monthly payment and set limits.
It saved me many times from companies charging me way more than I agreed to. (Bought a phone and never activated it, they tried to charge me $150 the next year, but I used a virtual card!)
