- Comment on Culture no longer exists in our reality today because the actors responsible for it most of it have long been deprived of their livelihood. 23 minutes ago:
I wasn’t considering music or TV, but you’ve just tickled what I thought OP was talking about. With social media taking off a lot of our culture is online now.
We had a lot of fun sharing jokes and songs and parodies of things etc on YouTube. This gave way to mini-cults as people started getting popular, and started sponsored content. Somewhere along the way people stopped doing it for fun, and it started being “game the system by any means necessary to make it big enough to sell shit”.
Its hard to put into exact words my issue, but it makes my soul ache.
Its not that crass commercialisation is dominating music, because that’s been the case longer than ive been alive. It just feels like its reached too far. Its in too much of what we do. Maybe its just this generation that will feel this way. The “old folks” are pretty much out of the game and dont understand this newfangled Internet thing, and the kids are growing up in this world and itll just be normal.
The next thing is “ignore it, get offline, touch grass, go to your local bar and meet real people” but even that is tainted now. People you meet have strong opinions that have been planted in them by targeted bots on the Internet. Theres big signs placed all over the walls “FIND US ON SOCIAL MEDIA” because you need an Internet presence for your business to survive, which means they need to be mindful of what they present themselves as to appease the algorithm, and suddenly they’re not real places for real people, they’re another extension of this near-singular will.
Its too big a concept for me to put into words, and i might be overstating it or missing a core concept, but it scares a tiny bit of me a whole lot.

It was funny the first time, but the memes oversaturated now.

I always take it to a literal extreme when these sorts of arguments come up.
“I’m happy paying towards unemployment benefits because everybody needs to eat. Even if its going to drug addicts spending it on crack, because they need thst crack and theyre going to get it. I’d rather them be in the dole office with their hands out than sneaking around my house in the night taking my xbox.”

Probably true, but everyone starts out like that, and its already broke. Either you fix it and youre a hero, or it stays broke and whatever

I always took anti hero to mean bad protagonist. Like in any normal story they’re almost definitely the villain, but the story follows them as the main character so we see the world through their eyes.
With this in mind i guess joker became anti hero when he got his own movie

Because it might be porn. If websites are found to be serving 18+ content without rigorous Orwellian ID checks they can be fined out their fucking arse.
A lot of websites have just blocked the UK entirely instead of dealing with that shit.

We scoff at them both, but seriously pick one and get comfortable, looking reality right in the butt-cheeks is bad for the soul.

I kinda want this. Half of me is laughing just from the idea, and half of me is disgusted by the concept and myself for even entertaining it.

I had a disciplinary for calling in sick, the most recent time I was “nearly dying” from the flu.
Ive got it in writing somewhere from the meeting report “I had the flu the other week and still made it in, just take 2 paracetamol and get on with it” and “the flu isnt contagious so you didnt have to worry about infecting other staff”
Next time that piece of paper surfaces im getting it framed.

Something similar happened to my dad. He had like 5 women on the go casual dating from a website. One of them convinced him to make a Facebook account. He didnt realise how public that shit is and they all found out about eachother.
He was a hero for about 2 seconds.

They’d be as well carrying on. Its in a pretty unique position as being a game that people are talking about before its even finished, which is pretty uncommon for most titles, and can be “the game they tried to ban” which did wonders for Manhunt, GTA and Postal.

My point was more “if we cant even prove that each other are sentient, how can we possibly prove that a computer cant be?”.

Can you prove it to anyone?
- Comment on Expecting a LLM to become conscious, is like expecting a painting to become alive 5 days ago:
Also even if it does experience and feel and has awareness and all that jazz, why do I want that? The I that is me is still going to face The Reaper, which is the only real reason to want immortality.
- Comment on Expecting a LLM to become conscious, is like expecting a painting to become alive 5 days ago:
I dont think we can currently prove that anyone other than ourselves are even conscious. As far as I know I’m the only one. The people around me look and act and appear conscious, but I’ll never know.

The responses ive gotten here have been surprising, and IMO a little short sighted. My problem with AI is largely ethical and “spiritual”, in that its trained on people’s work and is replacing them slowly but surely, and that it will lack the inherent creative “soul” that a human brings.
Compare what AI can do today with what it could do 10 years ago. What will it be capable of in another 10 years? Everybody says “lol never replace humans never because its shit” but I suspect different. They said they couldnt beat us at chess. They said they could never realistically pass for human. They said they’d never make music. They said they’d never be able to make art.
In my mind, the question shouldnt be “is it good enough” because it will be one day. The question should be “are you going to put up with this shit, and if so, to what degree”. Thats why I tried to differentiate between art/creativity and technical ability.
- Comment on What if I told you that refusing to trade your life time for money is a good and respectable choice 6 days ago:
Theres a lot of psychology that goes into schedules like that that I feel goes (deliberately?) Underresearched/underrepresented or something.
When I was working 5 days 8 hour shifts with weekends off, I was phoning in sick every time I could afford it, and would refuse Saturday shifts every time unless I was desperate for the money.
When I was working 3 on 3 off 12 hour shifts, I often ended up working 21 days straight accepting all the overtime. The fact that the next “weekend” was never more than 3 days away really made the work tolerable.
