The fact that someone that stupid is allowed to drive.
Too dumb to understand where the gas tank opening is

And too stupid to realise the hoses are designed to reach the other side of the car here too.
Gerudo@lemm.ee 5 weeks ago
I don’t know about where you live, but very few stations where I am have hoses long enough to do this. I think costco pumps are the only ones I’ve seen that are long enough.
ikidd@lemmy.world 4 weeks ago
She’s just going to drive away with it anyway.
iamjackflack@lemm.ee 5 weeks ago
This person should not be allowed to operate a vehicle ever
Randelung@lemmy.world 5 weeks ago
I’ve been practicing driving with a person who shouldn’t drive. She has no feeling for the car, i. e. doesn’t understand how you would correct your position, drive in reverse etc., and it feels like she’s asleep with her eyes open. Imo driving is a constant stream of decisions and she just doesn’t make any. “Why are we driving here?” - “I’ve been looking for somewhere to turn around.” - “We’re passing suitable locations every 3 seconds and you’re going 50.” - “I can’t decide in time which to use.”
She’s afraid to go the speed limit, highways are off limits. The other day she just straight up drove out into an intersection from a yield side without breaking and stopped in the middle. I warned her it was coming, there were signs and everything. She doesn’t know the speed limit when it’s always very clearly signed. She doesn’t read directions and can’t navigate by herself; “if I say nothing, go straight, or right if straight is not an option” is forgotten after 5 minutes. She’s been driving with an instructor (which I am not) for 20 lessons and we’ve gone at least ten times, too.

Having a society that’s designed so everyone has to drive is absurd.
Jamablaya@lemmy.world 5 weeks ago
I mean sometimes you just have to admit someone is dumb or has a specific deficiency and move on.

Protip look at fuel gage you’ll see a symbol telling you which side ◀️⛽ Sadly modern technology can only take us so far
Schorsch@feddit.org 5 weeks ago
Not in every car though. My car doesn’t have this. (Opel Meriva A)
ggppjj@lemmy.world 5 weeks ago
I’ve seen it where the side of the pump that the hose is on in the symbol acts like an arrow, any possibility that’s it?
WordBox@lemmy.world 5 weeks ago
Nifty. An opel insignia would… At least if it had a Buick badge.
NeatoBuilds@mander.xyz 5 weeks ago
My wife’s hyundai has two and each has an arrow going a different direction. Gets me every time because my car has the fill hole on the passenger side and hers is on driver side so I always look down at the arrow.
One I guess has the arrow to the right to signify how much gas is left and the other has an arrow to the left to say what side the pump is on but they are both the same icon

I feel bad for her - because that’s got to be dementia or something - but she shouldn’t be driving.

Some people were never meant to operate machinery of any kind, much less machines physically larger than they are.
Like, don’t even let this person touch a lawnmower.
Tetsuo@jlai.lu 5 weeks ago
Am I the only one who did pump fuel perfectly fine from the “wrong side”?
Usually the hose is long enough to do it safely as long as the car is not too behind the pump.

limelight79@lemm.ee 5 weeks ago
There’s a station near me with hoses that are long enough to do that with most vehicles (obviously my pickup wouldn’t fit, but every car I’ve driven is fine). But I don’t think most stations have hoses long enough to do that for anything but the smallest cars.
Tetsuo@jlai.lu 5 weeks ago
Just a reminder that in Europe we use normal sized cars :)
So the average car here in France can definitely fuel from the wrong side. You still need to park the car close to the pump but it works.
Now if you try to do that with a Cybertruck…

I have met people who have zero ability for 3D visualisation. I’m thinking this is one of those cases, plus a small panic after the second try.

LOL I was ready to defend the driver, having pulled in on the wrong side of the pump once or twice. I drive different cars, and while most have it on the driver’s side, one vehicle I drive regularly has it on the opposite side, so I have occasionally made the mistake.
But then I corrected it by turning the car around and pulling into the pump on the correct side…
cheeselover@lemmy.world 5 weeks ago
on the dashboard, there is an arrow next to the fuel icon. It shows which side to fill.
humorlessrepost@lemmy.world 5 weeks ago
But every time I pull around to the other side, the arrow keeps pointing away from the pumps!
kofe@lemmy.world 4 weeks ago
On some models yeah. I’ve had cars that didn’t
VonReposti@feddit.dk 4 weeks ago
Usually the fuel cap is on the passenger side according to the country of origin, so for example European = right side, Japanese = left side. It’s not 100% bullet proof but it can eliminate a bit of the guess work if the car doesn’t have an arrow to indicate such side the cap is on.

In this thread, user who has never driven an American car but thinks they know things
elucubra@sopuli.xyz 4 weeks ago
This is souch baseless bullshit
Resol@lemmy.world 4 weeks ago
There are cars that don’t have arrows to indicate the side of the fuel cap on the fuel meter? Well, if they exist, I have definitely never seen one.
But these are just two different standards. What if your car isn’t European or Japanese?
moopet@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 weeks ago
More importantly, unless you drive something the size of a bus, it doesn’t matter which side you park, it’ll still reach fine.
TedZanzibar@feddit.uk 4 weeks ago
If it doesn’t have an arrow then the correct side is denoted by whether the fuel icon itself has the hose on the left or right.

Nope, once the right-hand side pump got blocked by the black car she made it

Doesn’t understand rotation of an object. Drives a cubic ton of metal on wheels in the streets.
dingus@lemmy.world 5 weeks ago
My only thought as to why this could occur is that either the person is intoxicated or has some sort of cognitive issue like dementia OR that it was deliberately done as a sketch to make a viral video. The former are scary to think about. I can understand a “normal” person making this mistake once or twice, but the fact that it’s continuous and repeated would lead toward impairment.
flicker@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 weeks ago
I immediately thought this is a person on opiates.
Source: saw my mother do this when I was young.
SatansMaggotyCumFart@lemmy.world 5 weeks ago
What’s a cubic ton?
Is that like making the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs?
Tetsuo@jlai.lu 5 weeks ago
It’s a poor translation on my part.
Cubic tonne of metal would probably make more sense. But there is nothing cubic really in a car so I don’t know why I choose this wording.
As far as I know an heavy car is close to 1000Kg which is a Tonne in the metric system.
