This is a new image/meme for me and I like it. The hand gesture gives it a little bit of a “witches vs patriarchy” vibe too. I don’t know if that means more or less coming from a random old cishet dude, lol.

I’ve seen images of men with their testicles in a tourniquet and they did not look well at all. They weren’t even bleeding that much. It was less of a medical emergency and more of a hobby it seems.

Jfc I hope you’re not serious lol. These are self-defense rounds, meant to break apart inside the attacker or intruder, so you’re not shooting through walls, potentially killing people on the other side.

Part of a defense training class includes, “know your target and what’s behind it” for a reason

      • sad_detective_man@sopuli.xyz ⁨20⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

Nope, actually the opposite. They’re supposed to overpenetrate. But they look like they’re supposed to expand and fragment, right?

        Check it out: lehighdefense.com/…/xtreme-penetrator.html

They do really cool stuff inside ballistics gel because of the surface pressure on that flattened tip

That big artery in the inner thigh. … Yeah you can die pretty fast if it gets severed.

    source
    • HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world ⁨6⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

there’s a similar one on your arm. the one they give you IVs in. fun fact i was getting an IV removed and i had a fairly new RN (first year on the floor but damned competent. third day on my room and we’d gotten to become friendly. i’m pretty sure she had a family member who’d had a port and had been their caregiver or something) and she had just popped the catheter out of my AC. she pressed down with the cotton ball with her other thumb and… missed. GOOOOSH GOOOOSH GOOOOSH GOOOOSH goes my antecubital all over the room and she turns green. runs out of the room as i slowly and calmly (because i am high as balls on the good hospital painkillers) reach over and put some pressure on. about 30 seconds later she comes back in with a big gauze, i have the bleeding stopped and there were five great big red streaks all across the room. And her now that i think about it i am sure i was so embarrassed i couldn’t look her in the eye. I think i traumatized that poor woman. You really can’t control your instincts until you’ve been through it once or twice.

Once at a pet store , I reached in the cage to pet a jumbo rat that was sitting out for adoption (cause I love animals) but it bit me. And just happened to hit some main artery in my finger (I didn’t even know bigger ones were in the finger,). I pull my hand back and literally spray blood, 6 feet in diameter around the whole area. It’s on the floor. The cage. The table. The shelf. Like looked like someone got stabbed. And it was just a small puncture bite.

I mean it hurt but I was distracted by all the mess. So I wrap my gushing finger. And try to clean up my blood that’s everywhere cause I didn’t want a minimum wage worker to have to do it.

My bf at the time was a very squeamish guy. I actually saw his lips turn blue at the sight and I thought he was going to faint. (Yeah a grown man).

So I had to drive us both to the ER where I got a tetanus shot and a bandaid. (Not much to do for punctures).

Also my insurance wanted me to sue the pet store but I refused. They called multiple times. Wanted me to say the pet store was liable for the ER visit.

Which certainly would have resulted in someone losing their minimum wage job.

The hospital wanted me to report the animal to have it euthanized. I refused (literally my fault. ). .anywho.

I just remembered all the blood. And it happened so fast.

Lucky it was just a finger and I easily put pressure on it and stopped it pretty fast.

I’ve never put my hand in an unknown animal cage again. 😅

      • Zink@programming.dev ⁨2⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

Dang, were they actually going into an artery there, or was it just a large opening or you were also on blood thinners or something?

I get an IV every month and they always use a vein, and any bleeding is just a tiny ooze. But I’m holed up for a matter of hours, not days+ as with a hospital stay.

A friend of mine got heart surgery through his inner thigh. That artery is huge, so it provides easy access to the heart without needing to go near any organs. It still creeps me out to think about it, on the other hand it is pretty awesome that’s technologically feasible and provides a much safer procedure with a shorter recovery period.

      source
      • Agrivar@lemmy.world ⁨9⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

I had an arterial stent placed via the femoral artery. Trust me, it’s pretty dang nice having a tiny scar so high on my inner thigh that my hanging balls hide it instead of a huge one on my chest!

Believe it or not, that’s actually the most recent revision to the training. The military has been training to aim for the dick area because everyone has plates that protect center-mass these days. You cannot effectively move AND have armor that restricts your legs from working.

If you aim too low, you’ll hit a leg, which can be tourniquetted.

    source
    • just2look@lemmy.zip ⁨21⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

So I know this is a shitpost, but a pelvic shot is taught by some militaries as part of an alternative failure drill (two shots to the chest, followed by one to the head if they continue to be a threat). Its a larger target than a headshot requires, and is rarely protected by armor. Plus of you miss the shot is more likely to hit the ground instead of continuing flight well beyond whoever you were shooting at.

So shitpost or not, its not the worst place to shoot.

      source
      • Wakmrow@lemmy.world ⁨6⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

And if you hit the pelvis they are combat ineffective and require medical evacuation. You have now incapacitated three people.

      • imadethis@fedinsfw.app ⁨20⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

        taught by some militaries

        Also some police agencies.

More importantly, there are ‘junctional tourniquets’ now for armpits and groins. They’re obviously not as effective as a tourniquet around the limbs, but they’re around.

recoil also tends to pull high (if you’re not anticipating), so a groin shot if pulled would just end up centre mass instead, where a head shot would be a whiff

Women can be very good marksmen. If the implication here is that I don’t think there are real photos of girls with guns that’s not what I’m saying. I’ve just seen two or three instances of AI generated photos of girls with guns that replicated the film grain and had this 90s feel to them.

You got any stats on that? Because I feel like gender-myths shouldn’t be propagated one way or the other when they’re not true.

Because I can’t find stuff to support your statement.

What I do find is Men are more accurate than women in aiming at targets in both near space and extrapersonal space

Men outperformed women on both the extrapersonal aiming tasks, and women outperformed men on the task of fine motor skill. However, a male advantage was observed for one of the aiming tasks performed in near space, suggesting that the male advantage for aiming accuracy does not result from proximity

        But then again also

Close women, distant men: line bisection reveals sex-dimorphic patterns of visuomotor performance in near and far space

The mid-points of a series of lines which were positioned both within hand-reach (near space) and beyond hand-reach (far space) were estimated by 24 women and 24 men. When using a laser pointer to perform estimations, women were more accurate in the near condition than the far, whereas men were more accurate in the far condition than the near. When using a stick pointer for the far condition, women were more accurate than when using the laser, whereas men were more accurate using the laser pointer than the stick for the far condition. There was no difference between near and far accuracy scores for either sex using the stick. These results suggest that use of a tool which provides proprioceptive feedback causes the brain to remap far-space stimuli as if situated in near space.

Being amazing at shooting is more an individual trait than anything tied strictly to sex.

I’m not saying women aren’t better marksmen, I’ve heard that as well. But I served with a bunch and none of them were especially crack shots. They weren’t especially bad either. I never thought it’s got that much to do with genes or hormones, really. So I’d be interested to see if there is science showing women really are better on average.
