And if you didn’t get pregnant, there’s no evidence, so I guess it didn’t happen. (Unless the ruling party doesn’t like that guy.)
So, yeah. Someone friendly with the ruling party can pretty much rape with impunity, as long as there aren’t too many witnesses.

I’m glad this worked out in the end … but I’m afraid that if there’s ever a Subnautica 3, it’s going to be shit.

I hadn’t heard of this until now, and I would like to continue not hearing about it.

and probably failing due to competition that does.
If the competition also has to disclose AI usage, then they’ll be equally disadvantaged by their own AI labels.
No – they’re worried about competition that doesn’t use AI.

What’s wrong with debasing currency? Fuck currency.
- Comment on The end of uBlock Origin in Chrome is now weeks away, not months 3 weeks ago:
Guess it also depends on your system. I pretty routinely keep several hundred firefox tabs open with no issues … but I’ve got 80GB of RAM to go around, so it’s fine.

If you keep 1000 tabs open, maybe. Otherwise, it’s not too bad.
- Comment on The end of uBlock Origin in Chrome is now weeks away, not months 3 weeks ago:
I was scared for a long time to switch
But … why?
I’m honestly asking here. What’s so scary about using a different browser? I’ve got (let me count…) at least 6 different browsers installed on my current machine, switching between them for different tasks each of them is better at.
It’s not like switching from Windows to Linux, where you actually have to say goodbye to Windows (maybe) in order to make the switch. You can easily install Chrome and Firefox, using whichever one suits you at the moment. So what’s so scary about switching?
- Comment on The end of uBlock Origin in Chrome is now weeks away, not months 3 weeks ago:
Maybe then Chrome can finally die.
- Comment on The Empire is Responsible for the Imperial System 3 weeks ago:
IMO, the UK especially has no room to talk when it comes to measurement systems. They still use an unholy hodgepodge of imperial and metric and on top of that they have just a few weird as fuck things, like using ‘stone’ to refer to people’s weight and nothing else.

- Comment on Depth of the 10 deepest caves on Earth (2023) 4 weeks ago:
Pretty much all caves are in karst topography. What’s so special about this area in particular?
- Comment on Depth of the 10 deepest caves on Earth (2023) 4 weeks ago:
Interesting … what’s special about that one spot on earth that all 4 of the deepest caves would form there?
Anyway, I imagine this graphic is likely to change in the future, since the deepest parts of caves are often the least well-explored. When I was doing work as a cave explorer, we often did day trips to map parts of the upper cave, but trying to get to the deepest portions involved major multi-day expeditions. To get to the deepest unexplored frontier of one cave I worked in required a 4-day journey, one way.

Anything highly advertised is always some sort of scam and/or shitty, overpriced product.
Anything you see advertised more than once is a product to avoid. Especially if you see those advertisements on youtube.
- Comment on The way "self-checkout" has been pushed on us is nothing short of injustice 1 month ago:
Those profits will not be passed on 100% to consumers, but parts will be, to draw more people into the store.
Really, though, got any data on that? Because what’s to stop a store from passing 0% of that onto consumers and thus increasing their profits?
- Comment on The way "self-checkout" has been pushed on us is nothing short of injustice 1 month ago:
all those cards etc are just provided to tie you in, to increase the margin of the store. Reject them
Nah, fam. I’m getting that 10% veteran’s discount.
products will be more expensive in stores that use more expensive cashiers
All stores have at least some cashiers. At least, all the ones I ever go to.
And I’m going to need a source about those self-checkout stores being cheaper, because I sure haven’t seen that.
- Comment on The way "self-checkout" has been pushed on us is nothing short of injustice 1 month ago:
One of the main reasons why I refuse to use self-checkout.
A few more reasons:
-
In some stores, gift cards, discounts, coupons, etc can’t be used in self-checkout.
-
It’s essentially making me do the job of the cashier for free. Fuck that noise. They want me to do it, they can pay me.
-
The line for real registers is sometimes a bit longer, but it tends to move much faster, because it’s not full of a bunch of grandmas having their first experience with a robot accusing them of theft.
-
Gross germs all over the self-checkout machines, which I’m sure are never cleaned at all.

- Comment on Solar to dominate energy by 2035, but AI data centers will keep fossil fuels in business 1 month ago:
Maybe if we massively overbuild renewables, and then the AI bubble pops, electricity demand will suddenly drop, leaving us with an almost completely renewable-powered grid, since there’s no longer enough demand to spin up the fossil fuel plants?
- Comment on Magnetic bass detection? 1 month ago:
Interferometry, maybe?
Two microphones, side by side. Signals that come from directly in front (or directly behind, unfortunately) will hit both microphones simultaneously. But sounds coming from the side or any other angle will hit each microphone at slightly different times. If you then have a hardware or software solution to filter out any sound waves that don’t match, you’ve got a highly directional microphone that should work well in any frequency range. (Can also use this setup with 3 microphones if it needs to be 3D and filter out noise from above and below as well.)
There are commercially available setups that do this, but in theory it shouldn’t be too hard to build your own, either. I mean, in theory, you could just feed the outputs of both mics through an and-gate transistor into a single output, and that very simple hardware would do the filtering for you – you’ll only get the outputs from when both mics pic up the same sound at the same time.
- Comment on Magnetic bass detection? 1 month ago:
Maybe just stick with audio recording, but use a more directional microphone? (And use foam to isolate it from any vibrations in the walls/floor.)

- Comment on Will my sewing machine upgrade kill me? 2 months ago:
Depending on the type of motor, it may still have a motor capacitor to help it get started. Certain types of electric motors need a capacitor in order to start safely from a standstill, no matter how old they are. (And such motor capacitors can often be pretty large and dangerous.) And even if you’re not opening the motor housing where such a capacitor would probably be located, that capacitor will still be connected to certain electrical leads inside the machine, and touching those leads could expose you to it.
So still a good idea to check.
- Comment on Will my sewing machine upgrade kill me? 2 months ago:
30V won’t kill you.
Well, it definitely can, in certain circumstances – if there’s enough amperage available and if something (such as having wet hands) reduces the electrical resistance of your skin.
But, yes, with current in the micro-amps even when dead shorted, this shouldn’t be too dangerous.
Though, OP feeling a tingling when they touch it gives me pause. 30V shouldn’t really do that in most cases. OP is measuring AC voltage here, but maybe there’s also a DC voltage on it?
