Florida public schools will force students to take a Heritage Foundation-backed class on the “evils of communism.”
oh man. I so want to teach that class.
These people don’t see the evils of indoctrination? Teach history. Teach cause and effect and show the results. Then let people decide for themselves. This dumbing people down and telling them what to think isn’t helping anyone at all.
Floridiocy will never die
Communism IS a failed ideology in both theory and practice, and some of the most horrific atrocities in history have been committed following Marxist principles in order to achieve. That’s just objectively true.
However, I have problem with narrative driven education like this because you are guaranteed to have a lot manipulation and misinformation in there. History should always be taught objectively because the entire point of teaching it so we can learn from it. If the education is honest, how can we expect students to draw the right conclusions?
Education does play an important role in installing the right values, principles, and morals in the younger generations. However, it’s equally as important for the education to be unbiased, accurate, and taught critically. We can and should teach the flaws in communist theory, why communist attempts failed in history, and the atrocities committed in order to achieve it. However, we also must give an unbiased understanding of what the ideology is or at least supposed to be, what communist regimes ended up doing well, and an objective break down of our own history, flaws, mistakes, and atrocities.
The goal should never be to brainwash students into thinking communism is bad just because they’re told that it is. The goal should be to equip our future generations with accurate facts, critical thinking skills, and a broad understanding of themselves, their country, and the world so they’re prepared to face life in the best position possible. We shouldn’t fear facts, we shouldn’t fear criticism, and we shouldn’t use fear to teach. We want kids to today to reflect on themselves and their society and question things that they think are not right. That’s how societies improve and move forward. We can’t let these MAGA morons hinder the future of our kids or society’s progress because they’re insecure and ignorant.
what a shithole
Kind of like the DARE program this will backfire and create communist.
I could actually sell this: “Communism is way less fun than drugs, kids.”
We’re already in the Red Scare III™️
This is the beginning of the cleanse.
DARE probably got a lot of kid’s parents thrown in jail.
Let’s not forget the foster children to didler pipeline that is apparently foundational to the modern conservative movement.
We have to get these kids isolated and institutionalized so the rich people can abuse them. The orphan crushing machine needs blood.
The Dare program I went through must have been wildly different than everyone else’s. Our police were local and usually parents of students and it was way more targeted at being safe and not feeling pressured into taking drugs. It def pushed the legal side of heavier drugs but was very specific about marijuana and making sure you are safe and I’m a safe place if you end up taking it.
My DARE program had the cop dads but none of the safety and safe place stuff. I would attribute it to the mixed racial makeup of my district, if the comparison stands up to yours. The DARE cops talked about gangs more than anything.
DARE programs were notoriously ineffective. Some studies found that students who went through it were MORE likely to try drugs.
I also had a fairly friendly cop come in for our DARE classes when I was a kid. They also basically just said “drugs are always bad, just say no, if you don’t your whole life is ruined.”
They didn’t talk about why people use drugs. They lied or exaggerated negative effects. They discouraged any critical thinking about it. It was not a good program.
Ours definitely didn’t convey anything about “make sure you are in a safe space if you end up taking it”, it was fully “don’t do it, it’s evil!” and was so over the top that it definitely backfired for many kids. I also think that their practice of showing kids sealed samples of said drugs de-mystified them and made some kids curious.
I too immediately thought of DARE.
I’m a GenXer and I have literally been fed anti-communist propaganda since I was a very small child. It’s only in the last 20 years or so that I finally “woke up” and realized how absolute bullshit it all really is.
I don’t think this is necessarily due to age. I think it’s just that circumstances have made capitalism look so bad that you realize that the propaganda was exactly that.
Also gen X & I remember always playing as the U.S.S.R. in any game that let me choose because of the absolute banger of a national anthem!
The Civ 1 music was menacing and awesome. It reminded me of the Imperial March from The Empire Strikes Back.
I went to one of the very posh UK universities where they’re split into smaller colleges, and my friend’s college would play the Soviet National anthem at the end of every big party that was hosted in the college bar. The college student union had even passed a motion mandating that.
It was a surreal experience to see. A large chunk of people loved this tradition, but for very different reasons. There were a decent number who were straight up communists (or at least sufficiently left wing that they loved the political subversiveness of celebrating this song at such a posh university); Some people liked it ironically, for the meme (of the anthem-enjoyers, this faction were typically the poshest of the bunch); meanwhile, some people just thought the song was a banger — in my view, on this matter, these were the most based of them
Silver lining:
Conservatives have learned absolutely nothing from the failures of the D.A.R.E. program…
My favorite thing from the DARE officers coming to school was them teaching us what street drugs looked and smelled like so we wouldn’t get ripped off buying oregano instead of weed 😃
Also, all the different common household things you never would have thought to huff that could be huffed to get you high. Someone out there is huffing freon apparently.
Our equivalent gave us recommended pricing to make sure we don’t get scammed.
Ooh I think I’ll try a little from column A , most of column B, and none from column Cor D. Thanks for the recommendation.
I work with a dude who wears a D.A.R.E. shirt every day and he’s absolutely on drugs lol.
My wife used to wear a D.A.R.E. sweatshirt in college, we were always high as well. I don’t think anyone sports and dare merch unironically.
Funny how “communism always fails on its own” or “is a failed ideology”, yet is/was so significant, that it has to have it own special section.
And also an embargo and constantly plagued by the US.
Exactly and constantly and incessantly propagandized
Or that it has to be taught as an “inherently authoritarian ideology” and/or that it means <bad thing happening under capitalism>.
For fucks sake.
The kids will be okay. Exposure to the thing will foster critical thinking of the thing.
Uhh? So, like… Fascism propaganda classes?
They already do that weird culty “Pledge of Allegiance”, the soil is fertile for more brainwashing.
Reminds me of the mandatory classes on Marxism-Leninism that my parents had to take at university in the GDR.
It’s almost like all these words ar3 just synonyms to authoritarianism or smt 🙈
Maybe let them cook, if this is as moronic as it sounds, maybe it will turn out like D.A.R.E.
Anti-communist education works weirdly well, and it might include boring-ass liberalism as a “genocidal ideology”, but not due to complicitness in wars, but due to abortion, etc.
I think anti-communist education works much better when a.) the majority of people aren’t suffering massively under capitalism and b.) when you don’t have a collapsing “communist” nation across the pond with which to say “We told you so!”. It’s way easier to point to the wonders of capitalism when you see people pulling themselves out of poverty by working their 9-5 factory job and raising 4 kids on a single income, and much harder when that system is now making you finance a $5 burrito, with interest.
This is a stupid idea, but I have faith kids will smell the BS
I already kind of wrote off any kids raised in Florida. It’s like Mississippi or Alabama at this point.
As a Mississippi communist I resemble this statement.
As a Mississippi communist
Damn. Talk about being behind enemy lines! 😬
May you spread the revolution even into your forsaken land
Unfortunately they all grow up into Florida Man and Florida Woman in the end.
Other states should require to disclose the if you are coming from those states so you can be quarantined as someone with mental issues.
I’m from there. If everyone is so shitty, then why did Alabama have to be gerrymandered. You know Mississippi is just lots of black folks mostly? But yeah, the white folks are all nuts down here
Remember, kids: if communism is evil and communism is “taking your hard-earned money away and giving it to people who refuse to work,” then it’s your duty to demand the government stops those communist bailouts given to corporations that can’t support themselves.
Using schools for political indoctrination, misinformation, and propaganda in violation of student and teachers Constitutional rights? Yeah, sounds like Florida.
Every school in the country has always been used for indoctrination, misinformation, and propaganda. It’s just what capitalists have to do to convince everybody to support a system that benefits the rich at the expense of everyone else.
Suggest an alternative that actually works? The Nordic countries and those with pension/single payer are also capitalist.
A healthcare/retirement system doesn’t change your economic model unless you did something really wrong (like the United States did).
Let’s hope it works exactly as well as the state mandated abstinence only sex education, which is to say backfiring due to kids inherent rebelliousness
Hungarian here, we technically had those, and was one of the reasons why we got Fidesz.
People literally thought Gyurcsány will outlaw free expression, because people thought economic individualism of the eighties meant “free expression”.
We weren’t told, that the nazis used false pretenses to justify their atrocities, which got exploited by the right.
If you’re a student, then your entire life has been shadowed by MAGA, or the feckless Biden administration. No wonder their attitude toward Democracy sucks, and alternatives like Socialism or Communism sound like a more viable system than the broken system they know.
Democracy doesn’t truly exist under capitalism.
Uh, yeah. It’s capitalism that sucks. You can still have socialism and communism with democracy. There are several countries in existence now that have those things. No one hates democracy, except the politicians in power who want to keep it.
No one is a fan of authoritarianism. That is what we are currently getting, and we’re getting it under capitalism. Funny, it’s almost like the economic organization is only important to keep those who would cheat it from attaining the power to keep it all for themselves.
Hmmm.
The people riding the book probably don’t even know what communism is.
Guess TikTok really did a number on Western propaganda, at least in a couple of generations, and now America is even more afraid of losing their grip on narratives? Either way, that country is well and truly fucked, they’re just preparing for when the house of cards that is the American economy collapses and people need to be even more zombified to continue working and consuming. If the reputation of the American military crashes due to the new conflict in Iran (their reach and might have already been neutered in the region with billions in damaged and destroyed facilities), that might happen faster than expected. Hope American Lemmings either have enough money to be part of the new middle class or are seriously considering immigrating.
You can really smell the desperation in the air. The only reason to do this is because they know they’re pushing people to their breaking points.
If I’m anti-anti-communist, then I’m a communist.
And by that logic, if you’re anti-anti-facsist, the you are a fascist.
If I’m anti-anti-communist, then I’m a communist
Logically, yes, but we both know that “anticommunism” in the US is less about ideology and more about favoring US economic, political, and military imperialism. So even though I’m not a communist, I’m 100% anti-anticommunist.
if you’re anti-anti-facsist, the you are a fascist.
That one’s true, though.
Just teach history. Teach history, without an agenda. It’s history class, not propaganda class. Teach history, not a nationalist narrative.
That’s no good for them. They want the age of conquests to be seen as the glory days, so they can have their own war campaigns. This is what happened in Russia, then look at what they’re doing in Ukraine. Hungary also tries to paint over its colonial past, so one day someone can deslavialize the Slovakian nation (context: there’s a very popular conspiracy theory, that claims the Slovakians are just Magyars forced to speak a “made up” Slav language, to destroy the Magyar nation)
History is always written by the victor.
Well, if humanity is going to continue to progress, that needs to change. If it doesn’t change, then humanity doesn’t progress.
As Comrade Socko says, “the simple narrative taught in every history class is demonstrably false and pedagogically classist. “
I don’t see a problem with teaching about a history of communism and about atrocities. As long as its fair and factual. Cause there have been atrocities and failures, as with any system.
I wish them luck finding factual atrocities commited by communism ƪ(˘⌣˘)ʃ
Communism itself hasn’t commited any atrocity. But some implementations of it have been attempted, resulting in authoritarian regimes that did commit atrocities. I’m not against teaching about those, so next time we try we can learn from our mistakes. But of course, communism = bad is not the way to do it, and communism = atrocities isn’t either.
“Why do I have to go to school, if when I come home you tell me everything they’re saying is bullshit!?”
Lol random guesses on how terrible this is gonna end up
