    1. Blockbuster didnt exist in the EU.
    source
    • Scrollone@feddit.it ⁨11⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

It did. Italy was filled with Blockbusters and their hideous blue signage.

    • Never listened to music on a CD;
    • never listened to a vynil record;
    • never listened to a walkman
    • never listened to a boombox (had to search what this was)
    • never sent a postcard

36 years old. Just grew up mostly without access to music until I got my first PC. But I did have the opportunity to use a radio with a cassete tape player a few times as a kid.

Only one that I haven’t done is paper checks. Those weren’t really a thing here.

Of course, a few of those have come back around to be used by younger generations. There’s teens who rediscovered Polaroid and other film cameras in recent years. Ten years ago, cassettes saw a resurgence and vinyl was also selling well.

    source
    • Fleppensteijn@feddit.nl ⁨11⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

They were. I remember going to a shop with my father to spend his checks before the banks phased them out. Even I had a checkbook that came with my children’s bank account.

I think the passing out happened in the 90s but apparently banks still accepted checks until 2021.

    Two points. I’m 33.

    source
  • Hikermick@lemmy.world ⁨11⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

Zero (born in '66). Can we add some more to the list?

21: had to wait for the television to warm up

    • nostradamnit@infosec.pub ⁨11⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

Same here. Here’s some more… 22: I had a black and white television 23: The television didn’t have a remote control 24: On Sunday, television was closed, no programming other than religious stuff in the morning 25: At some point, often around midnight, the television went off the air 26: Cars didn’t have seat belts

      source
      • Hikermick@lemmy.world ⁨11⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

I lived through all that too except for very early Sunday mornings our local station would show Felix the Cat and Popeye cartoons followed by Davey and Goliath. I think they got away with t because it was before church started and Davey was somewhat religious

Same, seems like these are all from the 70s/80s/90s era basically.

  • ThatGuy46475@lemmy.world ⁨11⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

7.5 because I never checked if the outdoor music was from a boom box or not

    source
  • Pacattack57@lemmy.world ⁨11⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

This is just the age calculator. Anything over 5 points and you are less than 25 years old. I’d even go as far to say less than 30.

    source
  • OmegaMan@lemmings.world ⁨11⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

Lived in a small city. No point in recording radio to tape… You’ll hear the same songs again tomorrow anyway.

    source
    • madkins@lemmy.world ⁨11⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

I know it’s capitalized, but I read it as a generalization like Band-Aid, Frisbee, or Chapstick. Most people aren’t referring to only the name brand versions. Of course, maybe I’m wrong and I missed out on my perfect zero.

      source
      • OmegaMan@lemmings.world ⁨11⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

        Could be yeah.

        source
    • shalafi@lemmy.world ⁨11⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

Walkman was the only game in town as I remember. Where there generic versions? Think maybe I had a shitty one, but Walkman was the gold standard.

And so were the headphones! First in-ear audio that actually rocked out. Again, not sure there was much of anything else, but Iron Maiden thumped in those things. Now I want another pair.

      • ouRKaoS@lemmy.today ⁨11⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

I would love to find a pair of the earbuds that came with the OG Game Boy. I don’t know if they were the best things ever, or if I wasn’t so much of an audiophile then.

        source
      • OmegaMan@lemmings.world ⁨11⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

There were alternative portable tape players. Maybe not right away but there definitely were.

        source
  • Wilco@lemm.ee ⁨11⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

      source
    • Rakonat@lemmy.world ⁨11⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

2 points cause we lived a couple blocks from the library so we never felt the need to own a dictionary or encyclopedia. Though really like 1.5 since my sister did have a CD from world book program that was like an encyclopedia for kids

      source
    • hardcoreufo@lemmy.world ⁨11⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

My only point was I never listened to a boom box outside.

      source
      • ouRKaoS@lemmy.today ⁨11⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

I learned to ride my bike one handed so I could carry my boom box. Tracking down 8 D Batteries was the hardest part.

        source
      • proudblond@lemmy.world ⁨11⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

Mine might be that we didn’t own an encyclopedia; I can’t remember if we did or not. But… I think we did.

My town had a family video, not a blockbuster.

    source
    • toynbee@lemmy.world ⁨11⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

My town had a “Video Tonight” and we were allowed one rental per week, leading to the following regular exchange:

“Want to go to Video Tonight?”

“No, I’d rather wait until tomorrow.”

      source

Yep, 19 points here, never stepped foot inside Blockbuster

      source
  • collapse_already@lemmy.ml ⁨11⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

One point. I have never owned an encyclopedia unless Encarta counts. My parents owned one when I was a kid, and I used the library encyclopedia a ton. I’m in my early 50s. I’m surprised the encyclopedia is not the most common point.

    source
    • shalafi@lemmy.world ⁨11⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

I counted my parents owning Encyclopedia Britannica. 54 here.

      source
  • Kolanaki@pawb.social ⁨11⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

    1 point.

I have never sent a postcard. Bought plenty as a cheap souvenir/collectible thing; never actually mailed one to someone or even gave one to someone in person.

    source
    • Sarmyth@lemmy.world ⁨11⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

1 point for me as well, but I had never recorded radio to a cassette. Same age.

      source
  • Edge004@lemm.ee ⁨11⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

Mid 20s, and I got 10 points. 9 points if the blockbuster one does not mean blockbuster specifically

    source
  • Akasazh@feddit.nl ⁨11⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

I rented videos, but not at blockbuster… Otherwise 0 points

    source
    • xav@programming.dev ⁨11⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

Same same. No Blockbuster in Europe.

      source
  • Simulation6@sopuli.xyz ⁨11⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

1 point. Never used a boombox. And yes, I have written a check at a store while people waited in line behind me. Their cold angry stares still haunt me.

I’m in my mid 20s. Maybe it’s because I grew up poor and was using outdated tech when I was a kid.

I didn’t use vinyl or a film camera until a few years ago though, I have been really enjoying the physicality and ritualism of analog tech recently
