I got my first “home computer” in the days of the BBS’s when there was such a thing as a “long distance call”. Internet access was crazy expensive and not for the average geek. Back then it was a bit “underground”. There were professionals and there were passionate hobbyists. Most people didn’t have or need a computer in their lives. Things changed in the late 90’s boom. A cultural shift when suddenly everyone joined in. The geeks were no longer king
- Comment on Can I assemble a metal building by myself? 2 days ago:
Yes. Hopefully everything is cut to size. Cutting metal siding and roofing sucks if you don’t have the right tools. Rent them if you need. Best to build this on a concrete slab. The ground will be too uneven, throwing everything off plumb

- Comment on How come in American classrooms they make another language an elective. Why not teach our kids as many languages possible that way if we go somewhere we will kind of have uper hand? 1 week ago:
To be fair it’s tough to be proficient in a language you don’t get to use. In some places in the US, there’s plenty of Spanish speaking people. Other than that not so much.

- Comment on surely your hobby can't be that expensive 2 months ago:
Birdwatching. You can buy a book and binoculars if you like. The app Merlin is somewhat free to ID Birdwatching calls. Birdseed can get expensive or just plant sunflowers.
Wildflower identification. Best in early spring, Phone apps make this a little too easy. Seed collecting and propagation is my next goal. I also pull up invasive plants, mostly garlic mustard.
Gardening. Seeds are cheap but if want to start indoors you’ll need a light and possibly a heat mat. Start outdoors in a makeshift “greenhouse” using a clear plastic jug. Starter plants are cheap

I bought a house in the inner city like that. Some things off the top of my head: wiring from a wall switch to the ceiling light was wired with an extension cord. Not a heavy duty orange one, the brown twisty kind you would use for Christmas lights. Knob and tube wiring that was capped at a dead end (no junction box) protruding from a hole in a closet. At the panel everything was updated romex so it was tied in somewhere. Never figured out where. Wires were sliced together in the kitchen ceiling without being in a junction box, squirrels got in and would cause it to short out.
An outlet tester costs $10 and will tell you if outlets are wired properly.

So odd. The trim on the left has a notch cut in it to accommodate the light switch cover? Seems like it would have been easier to move the box on inch to the right or cut the plastic cover rather than the trim? Why not make better use of the space by accessing it from another wall? This looks like a novice handyman’s work. It would make me worry about what you can’t see.

I’ve eaten the seeds, they’re nasty unless dried out. Read the dangers beforehand. It’ll mess with your vision the next day, supposedly there is a chance of going blind. The hallucinations I experienced were pretty convincing, you might want to have a friend keep an eye on you. My buddy overdid things and got picked up by the cops, they put him in the psych ward

My understanding is that the types that are ozone generators don’t remove particles from the air, they charge the particles so that they stick to surfaces and aren’t floating in the air

Right out of school I got a job working in a shitty retail store where we would prank each other. For some reason there was a smoke detector still in the box that had a dying battery and chipped every few minutes. I would hide it in other worker’s aisles in the morning when we would straighten before opening. Fun times
- Comment on Why do seemingly all politicians (and no one else) do that hand gesture when they talk, the one where it looks like they're holding an invisible fishing rod? 4 months ago:
Correct answer right there. Politicians and business people are very aware of their body language. Another rule is never touch your face. When they do, photographers will snap a picture. In the photo they will look frustrated
