No worries, we will loop back around using a slingshot maneuver, keep going until we get where we want to be. :)

Oh, that sounds like a challenge. I’ma build a rocket with turkey heat shields
stevedice@sh.itjust.works 5 months ago
It’s moving 1 km/s, though.
obinice@lemmy.world 5 months ago
Oh my god I can still see the swear you tried to censor you satan worshipper! I’m so offended I dropped my body of christ into my tea!
The internet is for children ONLY, please take this FILTH back to your BBS, heathens!

It’s ok. He then knew “hell” was literally the sun. Keep looking at it and you’ll “see” God too.
ICastFist@programming.dev 5 months ago
Aim for the ground, if you miss that, just give up
HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 5 months ago
Disagreed. If you miss, take advantage and continue missing

Who are these people who cross out two letters of a cussword worried about? Everyone can still read this and all it does is make the edit look like someone is a pearl clutcher.
polydactyl@lemmy.world 5 months ago
What do you mean? What cuss word? What does it say?!?
HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 5 months ago
Butthole. It says butthole.
SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.de 5 months ago
Same reason that people bleep out two nanoseconds of the word in audio
BearGun@ttrpg.network 5 months ago
It’s typically for posting to platforms that “deprioritise” posts that contain “naughty” words, not actually anything about humans caring about it.

Ya but the moon covers at best only about 10 ppm of the sky’s area so given a random direction within the hemisphere defined by the sky in which the moon is visible and traveling in a straight line you have a roughly 99.9990% chance of missing so that’s understandable really.
HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 5 months ago
Don’t get me started about inclinations

I thought i was gonna have an easy time aiming for yo mama,
But the joke is on me cause i miss her.

milliams@lemmy.world 5 months ago
It’s moving pretty fast though.
ivanafterall@lemmy.world 5 months ago
That’s relative.
snugglesthefalse@sh.itjust.works 5 months ago
Relative is the only fast that matters
SculptusPoe@lemmy.world 5 months ago
The moon takes up only around 0.00077% of the visible area of the sky. That’s a pretty small target.
shalafi@lemmy.world 5 months ago
And begging your pardon sir, it’s a big ass sky.
GottaHaveFaith@fedia.io 5 months ago
Also it moves at 1 km/s around its orbit
ryedaft@sh.itjust.works 5 months ago
So you have almost an hour before it passes you. Easy mode.
falseWhite@programming.dev 5 months ago
Nuh uh. I measured it just now, put my trusty ruler in front of my face and measured only 2 CM!
BootLoop@sh.itjust.works 5 months ago
Not as fucking up as much as posting censored memes. You can swear on Lemmy, it’s allowed.

Yes you could have fucked this up more. You could have posted this censored bullshit on the Internet
Lauchmelder@feddit.org 5 months ago
Actually it makes more sense to state the moons solid angle in the sky from where I’m standing, instead of its surface area ☝️🤓
porksnort@slrpnk.net 5 months ago
Hold me and never let me go, you insatiable nerd.
mercano@lemmy.world 5 months ago
Make sure to lead your shot. At Apollo velocities, you’ll need to aim where the moon will be at in three days, not where it is right now.
IrateAnteater@sh.itjust.works 5 months ago
Why limit yourself to Apollo velocities? We’re trying to shoot the moon, not land in it.
Thedogdrinkscoffee@lemmy.ca 5 months ago
ilinamorato@lemmy.world 5 months ago
Shoot for the moon. If you miss, you’re now in orbit, and that was almost certainly the goal anyway
HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 5 months ago
That assumes we don’t blow up or get the death shimmy on the way up
azi@mander.xyz 5 months ago
That was pretty much how the USSR spun Luna 1
snugglesthefalse@sh.itjust.works 5 months ago
There are a lot of ways to shoot for the moon that don’t end with anything close to an orbit. Though it’s pretty hard to get out of orbiting the sun from here…
ilinamorato@lemmy.world 5 months ago
Yeah, but if you’re actually aiming for the moon and miss, an orbit is pretty likely. It may not be a good orbit, but consider that you’re most likely to miss because the moon has precessed in its orbit during your transit further than you expected, meaning that you’ll end up coming around the back of the moon and captured by its gravity.
porksnort@slrpnk.net 5 months ago
Plot twist, it’s elliptical.
don@lemmy.ca 5 months ago
That’s like the pasties of censorship lol
Dadifer@lemmy.world 5 months ago
You could fit every planet in the Solar System between Earth and our moon simultaneously.
ivanafterall@lemmy.world 5 months ago
Please don’t.
Thedogdrinkscoffee@lemmy.ca 5 months ago
I could? I think you overestimate my power.
hedgehogging_the_bed@lemmy.world 5 months ago
Fuck you for making me look this up. Only Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune would fit together. Venus, Mars, and Mercury are too much.
oxideseven@lemmy.ca 5 months ago
Depends on which part of the orbit. Perigee (closest point) is ~ 354,491 km surface to surface. Apogee (farthest point) is ~ 397,291 km surface to surface. At Apogee you could got them all. At perigee not at all.
MyTurtleSwimsUpsideDown@fedia.io 5 months ago
I have a feeling we would have a lot of problems if you did though.

It’s definitely not recommended by the few cosmology sources I’ve read.

I bet I could miss those, too.

OH DEAR LORD WE ARE OUT OF FUEL AND OXYGEN IT’S SO COLD SO COLD

Um ackshually you wouldn’t freeze in space, you’d overheat.
i hope that helps

I had a manager tells me this once. It was literally written on the mug he was drinking out of at the time. I remember feeling so valued and inspired.
ivanafterall@lemmy.world 5 months ago
“Among the stars” might suggest it’s very much not cold. You’re in a stellar nursery.
miss_demeanour@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 months ago
farked?
Kolanaki@pawb.social 5 months ago
That’s why in KSP I use the space map and just keep adding DeltaV until the orbit line from my rocket to the mun is a straight line and I launch when the planet is right in front of me.
