It’s not. This has been proposed multiple times throughout history. The U.S. program, named Project Plowshare, was active from the late 1950s to the 1970s and explored various peaceful applications for nuclear explosives. It was built on ideas from older, British and German plans. The Russians also had their own plans. This is not a new idea.
NoForwadSlashS@piefed.social 3 weeks ago
Newt is not a new man
DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Where, in OP’s post, does it claim this is a new idea?
tidderuuf@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Don’t a bunch of the Arab states make like extravagant man made islands and epic waterways? And they can’t find the resources to build this waterway through a couple mountains?
protist@retrofed.com 2 weeks ago
Unfortunately, it would still be in close proximity to Iran and well within attack distance, so it would be completely pointless.
TwilitSky@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Those are the quality/skilled Arabs. These people are not that.

Technically, this would be nuking the UAE and Yemen
stoy@lemmy.zip 3 weeks ago
For those who don’t know about it, Project Plowshare was a cold war project where the US investigating the use of nuclear weapons for geo engineering projects.
Here is a WTYP Podcast episode about it:

What a goddamned fucking idiot.

We put this man in charge of one of our branches of government. Let that sink in.

just a couple of nuclear detonations!
Tell me your mentally removed without saying the words
Tell me you have no idea about nuclear bombs, not the radiation, not the capabilities, nothing, without saying those words
Tell me you’re the dumbest fuck in class without saying the words

I mean it’s such a braindead take that he might as well be
ChillPenguin@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
It’s gotta be lead… Right? Right?!
Wilco@lemmy.zip 2 weeks ago
Absolutely has to be lead poisoning. We need to get these insane fuckers tested for it and have them committed if it shows in their system. That may be exactly what is needed and how to “peacefully” get these weird fuckers to retire.
EmpathicVagrant@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Don’t worry, they want/plan to put lead back into fuel so it affects an entire new generation
nymnympseudonym@piefed.social 3 weeks ago
Is this… actually Newt? Honestly can’t tell would appreciate clarification
fluffykittycat@slrpnk.net 3 weeks ago
I too want to know if project plowshare is back on the menu
chocrates@piefed.world 3 weeks ago
Isn’t Newt dead?
nymnympseudonym@piefed.social 3 weeks ago
Fuck. No, not yet

It’s satire, but newt ate the onion. And when does, he passes it around saying, “Delicious. Want a taste?”
Bamboodpanda@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
As funny as I find that article to be. The problem is that satire is reality most of the time these days. Even an idea as obviously dumb as this could actually be coming out of the white house.
AlfalFaFail@lemmy.ml 2 weeks ago
Neocons doing material analysis.
Danarchy@lemmy.nz 2 weeks ago
The key here is that you have to personally supervise the first explosion real close up to make sure the channels are correct. I had chatgpt design a special hard hard for you Mr Gangrinhch, so it’s got mondo safety parameters to keep you fit as a whistle

Eww.
I had to check and this dipshit is still alive.
Can we not have anything nice around here?
DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
I’ve stopped asking if people are this stupid, because yes, they are.
But, I think this is more about sowing fear, than a serious suggestion.
I keep trying to persuade myself, in spite of clear evidence to the contrary, that people are not this stupid. But, it doesn’t work.
marcos@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Oh man… I hate to blow your bubble, but that guy is just repeating something that was under serious consideration about 50 years ago.
He probably just remembers the proposals, and not the problems people found in it.
hperrin@lemmy.ca 2 weeks ago
Omg, I absolutely love the idea of fuel exhaust that’s even more radioactive than it already is. I just love it so much I could die.
GutterRat42@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
The biggest surprise for me is that he is still alive
NihilsineNefas@slrpnk.net 2 weeks ago
dejected_warp_core@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
I was gonna say. This idea has been floating around for decades.
Bottom line: Yes it will work. It will also involve transporting nuclear warheads to another country, which probably violates all kinds of treaties and will set governments everywhere into a panic of epic proportions. The knock-on effects of nuclear contamination will be a problem for the local population, local water table, and local ocean currents. You can bet your bottom-dollar that these, and possibly more, problems will be shouldered by the soon-to-be-god-forsaken masses of whatever country eventually okays this idea.
JcbAzPx@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Well, modern nukes aren’t as bad for contamination as the originals, since they only need enough fissile material to kick start the fusion reaction. The biggest issue is they don’t actually save you any time for the extravagant cost they add. You would still have to do manual construction and excavation along the whole length with the added complication of now having to deal with what contamination does still exist.
NihilsineNefas@slrpnk.net 2 weeks ago
No need for transport, they’re already in a certain country known for refusing to sign the nonproliferation treaty
Zamboni_Driver@lemmy.ca 2 weeks ago
So Newt is calling for nuclear bombs to be detonated in Israel?
abbiistabbii@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 weeks ago
Tell Newt to Google Nuclear winter.
grumpusbumpus@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Tell him to gobble broken glass.
billwashere@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
He’s not wrong. He’s just an idiot.
realitista@lemmus.org 2 weeks ago
Has he ever looked at a map? The only way I could see this happening is by going through the most populated parts of UAE.
DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
That’s a bonus, in their view.
realitista@lemmus.org 2 weeks ago
Still rather logistically difficult to convince the host country to nuke their major population centers.
mushroomman_toad@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 weeks ago
Hey, I’m all for nuking Dubai. But free the slaves first so they can get away before the blast.
matlag@sh.itjust.works 2 weeks ago
Sometimes, as leader, you need to make some hard calls! (hard for others, of course!).
humanspiral@lemmy.ca 2 weeks ago
There is a price between $10m/kg and $100m/kg that Iranians sell enriched uranium to US to satisfy US denuclearization aims, and Iran gets its reparations/reconstruction concession, and full trade access to the world. Of course Bibi will keep saying they are 2 weeks away from a weapon, but you have to fuck bibi.

“Yes, we’re irradiated now, but gas is under $3/gal.”
Kirp123@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Well it would be Dubai and the Saudis that would be irradiated. They should be fine with it right?
Ariselas@piefed.ca 3 weeks ago
the gas would likely be irradiated too. I heard of an early proposal to detonate nukes deep underground in the tar sands to bring the oil to the top, theoretically it would work but radioactive oil.
Skullgrid@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
fuck them saudis and their sportswashing
axh@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
That would guarantee a bright future for Dubai
Archangel1313@lemmy.ca 2 weeks ago
Less than that. They’d have to sell this particular gas at a discount, considering it would be radioactive after making this detour.
backalleycoyote@lemmy.today 2 weeks ago
You’re forgetting the power of marketing. Call it “Atomic Premium”, claim it’s formulated specifically for giant trucks with fake balls attached to the hitch, get a few hick-hop artists to name drop it in songs about cruising down red dirt roads, and run a meme campaign implying only woke blue-haired lib trannies with nose rings oppose irradiated gas. They’d drink it if they thought doing so would “own the libs”.

Nah, both carbon and hydrogen can absorb neutrons just fine,

How bad would the radiation actually be?
NoForwadSlashS@piefed.social 3 weeks ago
How bad can it possibly be? It’s only being held apart by a screwdriver
