IMHO modern tools and frameworks have reduced the work that needs to be done in the coding space more than they did in other areas.
Expectations grew immensely (as they should!) and modern hardware and graphics increased some of the needs… I mean, texturing was not a big deal, when you could barely show 10 pixels.
But, while big studios are overwhelmed by huge projects, the indie games are better than ever and there’s plenty of them (I think so… They were great the last time I checked… But I am old, so it was a decade ago). You can still get away with a bunch of lines and a few sprites, as long as you have really good ideas supporting them.

Easier to produce is also relative…
<Old man mode>Back in my days, to simply draw a 3d cube on the screen, you had to calculate the position of each corner, calculate normal for each cube face to find which faces should be visible, and fill the area between corners with pixels for each visible face. You did all of this in a memory buffer, so at the end you would swap buffers to show the complete cube on the screen… With current tools, you could make a simple FPS game with a similar amount of effort. The problem is, nobody would care about that FPS game, because it’s also easier to recognise low effort garbage nowadays</Old… Nach, I’m still a grumpy old man>

Profitability went out of fashion. Control and power is a new trend. Big tech controls 95% (if not more) of all information sources. Even if they don’t own newspapers, they can make them more or less visible at will. Google tried to monetize it with ads everywhere but that is the old way of thinking.
Cambridge analytica showed that by controlling the information, you can select who makes the laws.
Musk bought Twitter without any chance for a reasonable return on investment. Guess why?
The “old tech” (Google, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok) controls what you know. But AI goes a step further. It controls what you think about things. It can explain why, what you thought was outrageous, is perfectly normal, or vice versa. It’s your own personalised propaganda machine. Once enough people are hooked and get used to using AI, the enshitification phase will begin and the AI will become more and more opinionated. And most people won’t notice… Some will, but they don’t need to influence everyone.

Don’t worry, it makes your life a little bit harder now, but it is worth it, because if everything goes well, your employer will save a lot of money by firing you. Yes you will lose your source of income, but ChatGPT will help you by providing tips on how to survive as a homeless person!
Totally worth it.

- Comment on We'll probably never see a Grand Theft Auto set in a futuristic city like GTA 2 because the team "hated it": "People didn’t connect with the game or its city" 1 month ago:
I agree it was a success, but do you remember its launch? Big studios only copy formulas that guarantee win, and in this case even CD Projekt, studio beloved by gamers, initially struggled to turn it into success (And yes, I know I might be too cynical here, Rockstar still seems to be more focused on making good games than most big studios nowadays)

And that’s the real reason why they won’t make GTA in the future soon. That part of the market is already taken by CD Projekt, and Cyberpunk 2077 was not a clear success, so other CEOs won’t force their teams to fight for that market. Too much trouble, too much risk.
Copy what already worked, add a minimum innovation and maximum microtransactions and repeat until money stops flowing.

- Comment on In wake of Windows 10 retirement, over 780,000 Windows users skip Win 11 for Linux, says Zorin OS developers — distro hits unprecedented 1 million downloads in five weeks 2 months ago:
I downloaded Mint last week and started the installation but got cold feet when it came to drive formatting. I still want to keep my win10 operational in case I won’t be able to run something on Linux.
I never actually used Linux before… I installed it 3 times before and always quickly went back to windows due to some compatibility or driver issues, but…
<Rant mode=“venting”> I am NOT switching to win11… It’s enough that I am forced to use it at work. That system is so fuckin stupid… They took a lot of minor elements and just made each of them worse… I get that the sales department told you to shove OneDrive and Copilot everywhere, it’s stupid and annoying but I get it, it’s just plain old greed, but why can’t the Calendar show the whole month and don’t work on the second monitor?!? (Are you planning to add it as a paid subscription later?!?) </Rant>
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
