With innocent people being illegally abducted and wrongfully deported to El Salvador, I am astounded that there is so much concern about the Nintendo Switch 2. Seriously people!! Where are the priorities? WTF?!

Like it or not (I do not), the most important determining factor in American elections is people’s feelings about the economy. The horrors being done by our government are easy to turn a blind eye to. But the cost of living is something that can’t be avoided or suppressed.
Economic ruin is how we beat these motherfuckers.
Katana314@lemmy.world 2 days ago
My understanding is this has been the price of thousands of gaming communities enacting a “No politics” rule - people want to keep it external.
“This fucking piece of actual trash! He’s using the most broken character this game has ever put out, and trash talking over it like he’s ever fucked a woman. Literally eat a dick. What do you think, chat?…Oh. Holy shit. Sorry, I just saw some stuff about Trump, listen, I’m sorry, but we don’t talk politics here. It can get really toxic.”
morphballganon@mtgzone.com 2 days ago
Some non-zero percent of people think the trafficking is fake news. Harder to disbelieve a cost you pay yourself.
Others might think it’s normal deportation of undesirables. Harder to ignore something that affects you and yours.
RymrgandsDaughter@lemmy.world 2 days ago
You think gamers care about that 💀

“But that only effects those people… What about me!?”

How does people being wrongfully deported to El Salvador relate to a gaming community?
MellowYellow13@lemmy.world 2 days ago
You’ll find that out when they come deport you.
LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 2 days ago
Step 2: Nintendo doesn’t seem to GAF
Step 3: Trump says he’s open to talking with Nintendo
Step 4: Nintendo still doesn’t respond
Step 5: Trump cancels tariff, offers to buy Nintendo CEO lunchsamus12345@lemm.ee 3 days ago
Nintendo: “We also had to raise the price of digital games to $200.”
“But tariffs don’t apply to digital games.”
Nintendo: “Ah, yeah. Well, whenever you notice something like that, tariffs did it.”
“But why does the rest of the world have to pay the price, too?”
Nintendo: “TARIFFS!”

You‘re joking about it. I can hear the faint beeping of some LLM waiting to serve this to someone in power.
whoisearth@lemmy.ca 2 days ago
Tangential but was at the hospital for an Endo appointment with my son and chuckled in our waiting room “I bet there’s an old white guy in a suit right now going ‘but what if we made these waiting rooms smaller?’”
Note. Room was already small.

Sony: we‘ll make it a little more expensive for everyone else, so no one feels left out <3
Nintendo: t(°-°t)

What you meant to say was
Sony: we’ll let the whole world pay for the fascist bullshit the US is pulling <3Allero@lemmy.today 3 days ago
Let me fix that for you: Sony: we’ll let the whole world pay astronomical amounts of money because it makes us rich! And if someone calls us on it, we’ll say it’s all because of the US!

The saddest part is America didn’t vote for this either. Hell, most Americans didn’t vote at all… Absolutely stupid? Welcome to the US!

Will be hard with the preorders already out.

its nintendo, im sure they’re going to find some way to raise the price for everyone else too
yopyop@feddit.nl 3 days ago
I mean, yeah, Sony just did it with its ps5
echodot@feddit.uk 3 days ago
Haven’t they already announced the price?
Katana314@lemmy.world 3 days ago
In future history books: “…But the biggest exodus from the United States was after it was announced the Switch 2 would cost $1000 exclusively there.”
collapse_already@lemmy.ml 3 days ago
The price was going to be $499. A 145% tariff makes the price $1222.55. A 100% tariff would double the price and this is more than 100%.
Looks like pretty steep inflation fueled by tariffs. I wonder how the Denies Reality Party (DeRPs) will spin it.
HalfSalesman@lemm.ee 3 days ago
If Nintendo sues the Trump admin I’d have to finally side with Nintendo on a lawsuit.

Only 4.125% of the world population is affected. No biggy.
Evotech@lemmy.world 3 days ago
Delusional. They are going to spread that cost over everyone
echodot@feddit.uk 3 days ago
If they tried to spread the cost amongst everyone no one would buy the switch is already borderline unreasonably expensive. Limiting the price increase to only the tariffed country means they’ll only lose out on the American market not the everyone else in the world market, which is bigger.
ChairmanMeow@programming.dev 3 days ago
If the tariff is too great the cost becomes unspreadable. Spreading cost requires other regions to still afford the new price, and with numbers like this that’s unlikely.
About one-third of Switches were sold in the US. Spreading a 145% tariff means hiking everyone’s prices by 40-50%. That will murder sales in other regions.
Better to eat a 30% temporary loss that adds pressure on Trump to reverse-course than to eat an even higher loss and face backlash worldwide for making others pay for Trumps idiocy.
skozzii@lemmy.ca 3 days ago
Atleast this will radicalize the youth.
Elkot@lemmy.world 3 days ago
I wasn’t going to buy it anyway with those prices
Coreidan@lemmy.world 3 days ago
It could be $50 and I still won’t buy it.
Nintendo sucks and so do their games.
PC gaming for life! Oh and steam deck 😊
MotoAsh@lemmy.world 3 days ago
I mean, hating on Nintendo is a good idea, but their games distinctly do not suck (at least most of them). They only suck in so far as you have to pay Nintendo in some form to legally acquire and play them.
Carrot@lemmy.today 3 days ago
Nintendo games are excellent games. Some of the highest quality games among AAA studios. What sucks is Nintendo as a company
echodot@feddit.uk 3 days ago
It would be worth it if it cost $50. Of course it never would cost $50 it would be worth it if it cost the same as the first switch and if the games weren’t so expensive. There is a price point at which it is actually a good value product but it’s so far beyond that price point now, even without tariffs.
rpl6475@lemmy.ml 2 days ago
On Americans only? Right? 😟
suite403@lemmy.world 2 days ago
I would assume so, yea. They had stopped pre-orders in the US only when the tariffs were announced.

And there are those who have it even harder than YOU. Everyone’s station in life is different. They are allowed to experience that.
If they are being insensitive to your concerns, then maybe they are not a good friend, but it sound like you’re the one insensitive to their concerns. You can both have different concerns.
Also this is literally a Switch post in a gaming community amd you self selected this complaint in here. It’s telling.
Coelacanth@feddit.nu 3 days ago
And there are those who have it even harder than YOU. Everyone’s station in life is different. They are allowed to experience that.
I’ve never understand the logic of the people who espouse that line of thinking. Is only the one single person alive who has it the literal worst out of all the billions of living human beings allowed to feel bad, and everyone else is obliged to look at them and say “well it could technically be worse so I guess I’m not allowed to feel bad”?
SuspiciousCatThing@pawb.social 3 days ago
This is an odd place to put this complaint. You clicked on a post about the Switch. Make a post about struggling with money and the discussion should focus on that instead.
PieMePlenty@lemmy.world 3 days ago
And if you go to Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan, Congo, people are worried about losing limbs, life and actual stage 1 Maslow survival. They probably envy your problems right now. They keep focused on shit that actually matters, like not dying.
Yeah, people care about different things related to their circumstances. That’s life.
magic_smoke@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 days ago
I think the takeaway is “The Nintendo Switch 2 isn’t the thing you should be pissed about when these tariffs are going to cause a lot more problems for way more people.”
solomon42069@lemmy.world 3 days ago
I’m in Australia and my spouse has been on the waiting list for surgery for nearly 3 years - unable to walk more than 20 metres, unable to work. I’m the sole earner for our household.
So yeah I get there are differences in privilege. What I’m saying is that I envy people who don’t have to worry about their survival. I am not sorry I came off harsh about it, I am hurting right now and the responses I’ve received have only amplified the rage I feel at the privilidged.
Allero@lemmy.today 3 days ago
I’m sorry to hear about your situation - I’m in a somewhat similar financial position myself - but people are people, and in any income bracket there are things to be concerned about.
For you and me, it’s getting enough money to eat. For someone else, it is affording a Switch. For others, it’s the rise in the price of caviar forcing them into cheaper options.
Interestingly enough, all of this causes a significant amount of stress, and should you eventually get more money to spare, then after a brief euphoria you’ll have the same worries about Switch prices and other things you don’t seem to care about now.
In any case, I wish you all the best and hope you’ll find your way out of a situation. Hope your spouse gets the surgery and becomes able to work, you have your teeth, and everyone lives a bit happier going forward.
tomi000@lemmy.world 3 days ago
Noone is disagreeing with your concerns. They are disagreeing with your selfrighteous stance that your problems are the most important.
Using a switch gaming thread for self pity is some major narcissism red flag.Nibodhika@lemmy.world 3 days ago
Then why are you getting angry while checking this sub and this post? Seems like you’re also getting worked up over it.
I’m sorry you’re in a bad situation, I get it, I’m also not in a situation where I could even buy the switch 2 even if I wanted to. But this is a big deal, the USA have fucked themselves up in the ass so hard that people outside of it might get hit with it. The price of the switch 2 is just one of the tips of this iceberg, the price of the PS5 is another, but in a short while the same thing will start to happen to lots of electronics, including hospital ones, which could increase the price for everyone depending on how this plays out.
Unfortunately for the rest of us the US is a BIG extremely consumer market, and if they get taken off the picture the profit margin decreases and prices need to hike to keep up.
solomon42069@lemmy.world 3 days ago
Then why are you getting angry while checking this sub and this post? Seems like you’re also getting worked up over it.
To be clear - this story came up in my feed because I have an interest in gaming, I wasn’t checking the sub directly nor looking to talk about the Nintendo Switch 2.
If I didn’t have my life’s struggles right now, I would still not be excited by the Nintendo Switch 2 because I think it’s a lacklustre upgrade. I’ve never been one to buy on launch and I know I will be able to afford the Switch 2 one day, it’s just a matter of figuring out how to save up or waiting for the price to drop…
I shared a story of how one of my longest friends ignores real problems myself and another friend live through because he’s sorted for life’s problems and doesn’t have to worry about anything other than buying himself a Switch 2. I said I envy people who have it that easy - and people decided to start personally attacking me before I decided to share my side. I’ve done my best to only reply to genuine people and not react, and I think I’ve done alright in that regard…
As for the economic angle - I really think that while a technically correct example, the Nintendo Switch 2 just doesn’t hold up because it’s not a necessary device for life. The iPhone is a far better example of necessary goods, that will suffer greatly etc.
dan1101@lemm.ee 3 days ago
These tariffs shouldn’t be 145% of the retail price, they should be 145% of the wholesale price.

I’m going to save so much money by not going to the US to buy one of those… I wonder what I’ll do with all that wealth.
Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 4 days ago
That’s fine. Nintendo was already planning to impose the Nintendo tax. So I imposed the “I ain’t buyin’ this shit tax”.
NewNewAccount@lemmy.world 4 days ago
Wondering how this is going to play out. A Switch for $600+ is borderline insane.
NarrativeBear@lemmy.world 4 days ago
Hopefully gamers get together and protest Trump out of office for artificially bumping up the costs of goods.
Tarrifs = Tax
A tax that working people pay, in the country that set the tarriff.
mostNONheinous@lemmy.world 3 days ago
145% of 450 is 652, you add those together and it’s essentially 1100$. And that’s before tax at the register in the US.
ExtantHuman@lemm.ee 3 days ago
Lol. That 600+ is JUST the extra tax. That’s on top of the base price
Hudell@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 days ago
I don’t even want to imagine what is going to be the price for it here in Brazil. After the ps4 launched for nearly $2000 I haven’t even looked at any console retail prices here again.
Ledericas@lemm.ee 3 days ago
They will just put the games at 100 each, not including DLC
billwashere@lemmy.world 2 days ago
Yeah I didn’t wanna pay that for a PS5. And the PS5 GPU alone is likely 5 times more power then what’s rumored to be in the switch 2… no way I’m paying that for a switch.
suite403@lemmy.world 2 days ago
They already crossed the border!
NarrativeBear@lemmy.world 4 days ago
Thanks Trump for adding a 145% “tax” on my electronics. How am I supposed to afford anything now!?
Guess I may as well just go protest instead.
callouscomic@lemm.ee 3 days ago
Thanks half the voting country too. You got neighbors who asked for this.
Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 3 days ago
I wasn’t going to get one even if it was £20, but how? Trump set the tariffs. Obviously it’s going to cost a shitload more if there is a 145% tariff in the US.
