- Comment on Crucial is shutting down — because Micron wants to sell its RAM and SSDs to AI companies instead 9 hours ago:
A fun reminder that during the pandemic, before AI, there was a backlog in new cars because all the crucial chips were unavailable due to an increase in bullshit like wifi enabled toasters.
It has nothing to do with AI. Consumers are asking for this shit and companies are delivering.

Meh it’s all semantics. I consider myself middle class and I make almost 200$k a year. I have more in common with the homeless guy at the go train station than I do with the CIO of my company.
I wish more people were this way. It’s why I still prefer taking public transit. It grounds me. I’d rather be around people struggling to get by than those who have never known what it’s like to put hotdogs in your mac & cheese.

Americans are just learning what us lower middle class families have been doing for decades already?
Welcome to the wonderful world of potlucks where aunt Nancy brings the same disgusting dry ham every year but it’s ok because uncle Mark brings the same potato casserole which slaps.

On point 1. Every time stuff like this comes up in policy discussions there is pushback maybe because the narrative is too vague I don’t know. The gist is the requirement for named users online not aliases, or a way to tie those aliases easily to named users if required.
People don’t like this. I would argue it’s too late to get a consensus and stuff like Facebook tying your phone and name to an account is needed.
The nuance is how companies and governments use that information and in that we continue to fail hard. My name and my number is my data to decide how to share NOT for Facebook or anyone else.
Penny arcade provided decades ago the internet anonymity problem and it’s growing alarmingly fast.
We all are or have been that person to yell shitcock! at times.

Of course! I’m GenX and I use it at work and home as well for a variety of purposes but do I **need ** it? Does anyone **need ** it?

I was taking my kids to the dentist yesterday and was listening to the radio with them.
It’s anecdotal and a small sample size but the only people talking about AI are journalists and money men.
I work in IT and the consensus is it is a valuable tool but it really isn’t taking anyone’s job.
For my kids and those their age and younger (15) the consensus is AI can fuck off and it’s responsible for polluting their social media with crap.
Tl;Dr - the only people pushing AI are the money men and the policy makers. No one wants this.

Seriously the stock market can remain irrational longer than you can stay solvent.
People are idiots.
Is there a consensus there’s an AI bubble? Sure?
Can anyone predict what will happen? LOfuckingL

Based on human nature over thousands of years the prevailing history shows us that “we” do not want to administer what we build. Governments worldwide forever have struggled with Capex vs Opex.
For that reason, I do not want government getting into the habit of owning shit. Look at Russia or anywhere in the eastern block for the infrastructure that is literally crumbling. It’s all because we do not do Opex. We never have and nothing tells me we ever will. Working in corporate I can tell you it’s a struggle there too. Human nature does not prioritize Opex.
So the question is, how would this be any different?
I personally believe the government should be building more housing not the market because the market wants money and some things like starter homes do not make money. That does not mean I want the government owning and administering homes. Build them, sell them in the market and let the people who own it decide what to do.
Do not let non-citizens or businesses in any way own anything.
Government should be putting in place the rules and enforcing them but that’s it. The problem is they don’t want to enforce shit.
There’s the other issue. People are lazy AF and what’s worse is most people refuse to acknowledge it which means most people are hypocrisy too lol
