Don’t log in to watch youtube. You’re not one of those…(spits) youtube commenters, are you? Use 3rd party frontends for your subscriptions. Some don’t even need a google account.

gila@lemm.ee 1 year ago
Any suggestions for 3rd party frontends which recommend videos algorithmically like when you’re logged in?
NightOwl@lemmy.one 1 year ago
I don’t think there is any. That’s the “con” of not being tracked with no personalization.
CubitOom@infosec.pub 1 year ago
On my phone, I’ve been using newpipe for a few years with little complaints. I can import my Google account subscriptions to it but I can’t comment or rate.
On my home theater PC I have been watching YouTube via Kodi with a Google API for over 6 years. It works excellent and there is no ads. Although Google may at any time revoke access to the API or charge me a fee to use it. It is kinda technical to set up and requires Kodi which is a rather large package with a lot of python dependencies. So if you only want to watch YouTube and don’t want to set up a Google API or read a doc then it might not be for you.
Others comments here mentioned freetube which looks really promising and I might try it on my laptop.
helenslunch@feddit.nl 1 year ago
Most of them will recommend relevant videos but there’s no way to algorithmically recommend videos especially for you without having any information about you.
Most content I find by searching.
TWeaK@lemm.ee 1 year ago
Why not log into YouTube? Google already tracks your browser everywhere else - including your online banking, which often you can’t access without enabling connections to google.com and gstatic.com (along with the domain you’re actually accessing, that provides 3 points of internet routing for highly effective triangulation).
Facebook tracks you even when you’re not logged in. Maybe not logging in makes the data they collect slightly less valuable, but they’re still collecting it. At least logging in gives you access to a proper watch history.
Saying all that, more power to you if you choose to work around it. However, if you’re going to youtube.com to watch things then there isn’t really any difference doing so logged in or logged out, for the most part.
abhibeckert@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Google already tracks your browser everywhere
They try to track me. It’s pretty clear they’re not successful, given the lack of relevance in the ads I do see when I disable my ad blocker and also how often Google asks me to prove I’m even human at all.
takeda@lemmy.world 1 year ago
To make it a bit harder for them. I’m still not fully understanding it as it didn’t affect me yet, but when they were introducing it they were calling it a “three strikes rule” or something like that. Maybe those strikes are counted against your account?
netchami@sh.itjust.works 1 year ago
Just block all Google domains in your DNS/Firewall and have a separate browser with a different DoH resolver exclusively for online banking. You can go even further and have a separate VM or physical device for online banking only.

Congratulations, you are free.

- Use Firefox
- Use UBlock Origin - Don’t add any other adblockers, turn off any adblocking features on other plugins.
- Any time you see this message, go to the UBO settings, under filter lists click “Purge All Caches” and then "Update all."
- Refresh the page.
- If that doesn’t work give it a few hours and try again. So far the UBO guys are updating a lot faster than Google can catch them.
This is the one method that has been consistently working for everyone.
thisbenzingring@lemmy.sdf.org 1 year ago
A properly configured No-Script and Firefox works wonders, I don’t even need an adblocker
Renacles@discuss.tchncs.de 1 year ago
Ublock Origin settings -> filters -> purge cache -> update filters.
If that doesn’t sort it out then google updated the script recently and you need to wait for the devs to patch it, it usually takes less than an hour.
nous@programming.dev 1 year ago
I found clearings cookies for youtube to also help sometimes.

Hamartiogonic@sopuli.xyz 1 year ago
Yattee is great if you don’t care about logging in.
If you do, there are still ways to block the ads by using an ad blocker for Safari or even using a different browser such as avast, opera or brave. You may need to tweak some settings, so it’s not guaranteed to be a plug and play experience. Even if a browser works with iOS, it might not work in iPadOS, so be prepared to try lots of different things.
netchami@sh.itjust.works 1 year ago
avast, opera
You shouldn’t use these under any circumstances. Brave is not great, but it’s the best option on iOS I guess.
NightOwl@lemmy.one 1 year ago
Freetube has been the most headache free experience for me, since I don’t need to worry about getting my account banned if YouTube doesn’t like Adblock or having to fiddle with ublock. It allows importing of your feed too.
abhibeckert@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Go into developer tools, Ctrl-Shift-P, search for “Clear” and then select “Clear Site Data”.
Reload the page. Presto… it’s been a week now and I haven’t seen that message.
hiremenot_recruiter@discuss.tchncs.de 1 year ago
What are people doing to get this message? I haven’t seen a YouTube ad in so long I can’t remember.
-
Don’t use the official app, use something like NewPipe or the equivalent on iPhone, on desktop use Firefox with uBlock origin (go into settings and enable filters at your leisure)
-
Get a VPN that has adblocking built in (I use Mullvad, I honestly don’t know how effective it is because I have other adblocking as well on top)
-
if you want to get fancy with your home network, use AdGuard on a raspberry pi or docker or whatever works best for you
Thorny_Insight@lemm.ee 1 year ago
They’re AB-testing it. Not everyone is getting these notifcations. I do on Firefox + uBlock Origin but it goes away for a while after I update the filters. I just need to do that several times a day
Hirosum@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Ive been using a combination of ublock origin and privacy badger. Set badger to strict blocking of any tracking from youtube and i have not seen an ad or adblock popup in a week or two now
tony@lemmy.hoyle.me.uk 1 year ago
I’ve never seen it despite doing nothing special beyond my normal ad blocking… it’s a partial rollout I think.
shneancy@lemmy.world 1 year ago
yeah, though I’ve heard about it for weeks at this point only this morning I got the first pop-up, and it’s still the one I can just ignore

YouTube is trash these days. Did a few searches earlier and got nothing but shorts. Absolute garbage results.

I hate how they recommend unrelated videos in your search results. And then repeat videos lower down in the results that were already at the top.

Have you tried disabling your ad blocker or paying for YouTube premium?
FiskFisk33@startrek.website 1 year ago
have you seen their prices?
dalingrin@lemm.ee 1 year ago
Yes I have and I think they’re fair. $14/mo for Youtube + Youtube Music vs $11/mo for Spotify.
astronought@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Does YouTube not deserve to charge for the goods and services they provide?
There are alot of services I choose to not pay and thus I don’t consume their services.
It’s all good to decide it’s not worth it and not pay, but that doesn’t automatically give people the rights to use the product in a way it’s not intended.

find something else. theres always the high seas
youtube is kinda dead to me, i wish people would stop posting links sourced there
hiddengoat@kbin.social 1 year ago
Yeah, the high seas are totally known for having short form videos on various subjects from a number of independent creators.
Deebster@programming.dev 1 year ago
If the content is from Youtube, I think it’s fine to post that link - there are plugins to rewrite to something else if you use it, but for those who have paid/functioning ad blockers Youtube is most likely to work well.
originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com 1 year ago
and this is the reason youtube will continue to fuck everyone over.
you all lack convitction to actually stand up and not use a service thats fuckinng you over. yeah, youre going to lose some content from some providers, so tell them. but fucking stand up for yourselves, you do not have to use youtube.

ncognito mode
Don't log inYoutube works fine in that mode with ad blockers. If you want to be logged in, uBlock typically updates within an hour or two of any google change. This message has the github link with info
jimmydoreisalefty@lemmus.org 1 year ago
What is your setup?
What have you tried?
loxo@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Firefox + ublock. Just did “purge all caches” and “update now” with ublock and I can watch again thankfully.
netchami@sh.itjust.works 1 year ago
Thorny_Insight@lemm.ee 1 year ago
YouTube updates their adblocking detection algorithm few times a day so you need to keep updating ublock few times a day too. However you don’t need to update the entire filter list. Find the one that says “quick fixes”, click the clock icon after it and then the update button on the top. So far this has worked for me. Previously I was getting that pop-up several times a day and now I’ve went almost a week without. Also if you’re using firefox, as you should, make sure you disable the enhanced tracking protection for YouTube (shield icon at the address bar before www.youtube.com…)
Yesterday after not updating the filters for a while I got the “video player will be blocked after 3 videos” pop-up, but after updating the filters I haven’t seen that one again either and the player haven’t been blocked either.
TheDarksteel94@sopuli.xyz 1 year ago
Unpopular opinion: You could just pay for the services you are using. It’s a private platform and it’s not necessary for your survival. You shouldn’t feel entitled to get anything but the most necessary things for free. If anything, getting free things is a privilege.
TheDrunkard@lemmy.world 1 year ago
It’s not unpopular, it’s just that on Lemmy and in tech circles, it’s not cool to pay for things. Cool people steal content they have no rights to because they like doing crime and not having consequences. I’m a carpenter, and I work hard for a living, so I value work and my ethics are to reward others for their work. Pirates don’t see the world that way, no matter what bullshit they spew about how horrible a company is or how it doesn’t deserve to be paid. Your not alone, but it might seem that way on Lemmy.
creditCrazy@lemmy.world 1 year ago
It’s for that reason that I think pay for sites should be the norm as from what I’m informed video sharing sites like YouTube are a very unprofitable business model and even with the ads YouTube is not breaking even it’s only a loss that Google can afford and YouTube brings attention to other Google services while yes we have parts of the web where even when you pay you still get ads and that’s wrong
TWeaK@lemm.ee 1 year ago
Re-evaluate your life decisions and ask yourself how you got to 2023 without learning how to block ads.
DesolateMood@lemm.ee 1 year ago
OP is literally in this position because they are blocking ads
TWeaK@lemm.ee 1 year ago
OP is literally in this position because they’re not blocking ads effectively.
I get that I’m somewhat biased, in that it hasn’t affected me so much. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t valid for me to point out the rift in experiences.
Software is supposed to work for the user; it’s supposed to make things easier. Somewhere along the way that philosophy has been twisted into the software working for the publisher, at the expense of the user. The very acceptance of that premise is the problem - let alone the acceptance of viewing ads.
QuestioningEspecialy@kbin.social 1 year ago
Desktop alternative: https://github.com/clsid2/mpc-hc#readme
You can stream videos directly from Youtube and many other video websites
Put yt-dlp.exe in the MPC-HC installation folder.
Then you can open website URLs in the player: Menu > File > Open File/URL
You can even download those videos: Menu > File > Save a copy
Tip: to be able to download in best quality with yt-dlp/youtube-dl, it is recommended to also put ffmpeg.exe in the MPC-HC folder. Also (desktop & app): https://www.vlchelp.com/play-youtube-videos-vlc-media-player/

Use a different service or allow ads, maybeperhaps?
FaceDeer@kbin.social 1 year ago
As a compromise until the adblockers come more consistently out on top, I installed Youtube Ad Auto-skipper. It automatically triggers "skip ad" the moment it becomes clickable. There's a Chrome version too, I believe.
Platinwing@feddit.de 1 year ago
Take a look at Freetube, if you dont like it there ate many different frontends out there, but some can be a bit complicated to set up.
Donjuanme@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Strange, it seems you can watch it, hey you can even watch it without ads, but you’re not willing to. I wouldn’t use the word “can’t” anymore, you don’t seem to understand it’s meaning.
Treczoks@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Just use a proper OS/Browser/Blocker combination. I have yet to see a YT ad on any of my PCs, and so far I did not get any kind of warning from them. It just works.
And I know how annoying those YT ads are from my phone…
Rouxibeau@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I just caught my first today using Firefox with ublock origin. They’re coming for us all.
foggy@lemmy.world 1 year ago
When they go full throttle, idk how places like schools are going to mitigate.
Once ads are in classrooms on a platform like YouTube you’d be able to target those accounts and give them ads for, well, anything. At school, during lessons.
Our govt really needs to step in and regulate the tech giants.
Mojojojo1993@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Leave YouTube I suppose
CarbonIceDragon@pawb.social 1 year ago
If you still want to use your subscriptions and such, and are okay with an extra click, right click the video instead of opening it and hit open in new private window (in Firefox, but Id assume similar features in other browsers also work, since we’re just trying to quickly open it in a rab where you aren’t logged in). For some reason, the anti-adblock seems to be account based currently, so you can keep using adblockers like ublock origin just as before if you aren’t logged in. At the time of writing at least.
AnokLola@lemm.ee 1 year ago
Just use Adguard, please.

For your feedback to be seen and addressed, please post there, too. They’re not watching this Lemmy thread, and there won’t be any action items to come from feedback here alone.
