Invidious is an old standby
Pratai@lemmy.ca 1 year ago
Just stop using YouTube.
LifeOfChance@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Do you not realize just how difficult that is? People use it to help them learn especially in the automotive industry and skilled labor jobs.

Then just turn on the ads for the occasional instruction video you need to watch.

It’s the perfect time to quit when they’re making it so easy!

I think pornhub should jump on this opportunity to get their own YouTube alternative. Or, if they already have one, start pushing it. Figure out the revenue model and go for it. They have good fast servers and data store. People know the brand. User migration should not be an issue.
wizardbeard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 year ago
The issue is that Youtube isn’t profitable. There isn’t really a business model besides milking as much cash out as you can and subsidizing the rest with money from the parts of Google that actually make money.
Doesn’t make this bullshit okay, but this is something regularly overlooked when people start talking about competitors or alternatives.

Invert the colors and call it VidHub or something.

You can use Invidious, Piped.video or FreeTube if you’re on a computer. If you’re on something like a mobile phone use GrayJay or NewPipe. If you want to continue using YouTube normally, Brave’s adblocker blocks those pop-ups completely. Also if you use Ublock try updating the filters.
eek2121@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Just hit the refresh button. None of the variants I have seen pop up on reload.
That being said, as long as you ONLY have uBlock Origin installed (no other ad-blockers), you should rarely see this popup, if at all.

If you have tampered monkey, I have a script to open videos on invidious instead. (only the thumbnail) It’s not perfect, but works well enough, it’s my default viewing way now. Tell me if you’re interrested.
Supervisor194@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I’ve been doing this with LibRedirect, but for some reason this past week, both Invidious and Piped are having problems showing video for me.

Could try out grayjay only available sideloaded on android atm but open source and I believe coded in C#
Chozo@kbin.social 1 year ago
It's not open source. At least, not in the conventional sense. The source is available, but it's not under a traditional OSS license.
LoafyLemon@kbin.social 1 year ago
It is open source, it's just not libre.
Etterra@lemmy.world 1 year ago
If you use Ghostery, whitelist YouTube until they can fix that.

Imagine how it for those of us who run clean browsers but pfblocker-ng at the router. It’s a no go - hell, I can’t even log into Google anymore, and most cloudflare sites out me in the human verification loop.
wizardbeard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 year ago
Seriously? Fuck. I was just about to set up something along those lines on my home network, but my biggest concern is that it has to be nigh invisible to the technically challenged.
thisisawayoflife@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Yeah it’s super weird. I figured out that if I use Chrome I can get around cloudflare, but I still have problems with Google. I normally use Firefox as my primary browser. I also don’t like having a bunch of browser plugins (KeePassXC is the only one).

I’ve seen my kid’s YouTube show this page on her chrome+ublock.
My wife’s using chrome+ublock and it still work. I use Firefox+ublock and Opera GX+default ad block they are still working fine. All of this on the same PC. Maybe I’m just lucky.
