sopularity_fax@sopuli.xyz 2 days ago
That was what the election was for. When someone votes for a person like Trump, they are voting to not hold him accountable and to continue doing worse and worse things and to do away with guardrails, rules, rights, and all those other niceties of the social contract.
eestileib@lemmy.blahaj.zone 21 hours ago
AIPAC and a few dozen rich people tell the RNC, the DNC, the supreme court, and the president what to do.
The reason it seems like the democrats are complicit is because, at the leadership level, they are.
Schumer and Jeffries are pro genocide in Gaza and pro-ICE because their future plans for America also involve genocide.
Baggie@lemmy.zip 20 hours ago
Exactly. People keep going on and on about how democrats would never get away with this shit, it’s because that’s the role they play. They tall poppy the actual good people out of the system, and present themselves as the good option when the only other choice is a rampaging fascism.
Like, I get the frustration, but at this point if feels too in the nose to miss anymore. Like people are getting gunned down randomly in the streets, it’s not that complicated.

Because the usa never had any accountability policies agsinst american presidents
protist@mander.xyz 2 days ago
Well, we did, it just requires functional legislative and judicial branches, which we no longer have
mrdown@lemmy.world 2 days ago
Oh yeah? Give me an real concrete example of a president getting hold accountable in the usa. By accountability I don’t just mean impeachement but real consequences like jail

Edit: Y’all, accountability ≠ jail or death.

andrewrgross@slrpnk.net 2 days ago
Respectfully, I think this is a naive myth.
Ask yourself this: if Bernie won and began executing his agenda with the brash disregard for criticism of Trump, do you think he could do it and people would say the same things we say about Trump? Or do you think we would see the collective power of congress the supreme Court the state governments and the corporate world come down on him in 100 different ways?
I think the more honest truth is that there are people with power who like what Trump is doing, and the people who don’t like what he’s doing don’t have power.
BranBucket@lemmy.world 23 hours ago
He’s enabled by some very wealthy people. And in the US wealth is more than just money, it’s often the most important factor in status, popularity, and social and political power.
Even some the people screaming for empathy, understanding, and improved social programs often look down upon the poor and homeless, they just hide it behind a veneer of doing good. They want to rid the nation of poverty not because it’s the right thing to do, but so that they aren’t confronted with the reality of what causes poverty and the guilt they feel when they pass by someone who’s panhandling.
Our nation’s version of original sin is productivity. If you’re alive, you must feed into the economic system, you must support yourself and not be a burden to others. If you’re successful and wealthy, it means all lessers sins (getting bailed out with tax money, wage theft and fraud, destroying the environment, prejudice, sexual predation, etc.) will be forgiven by at least half the nation. This effect is more profound for celebrity performers.
So, if you’re stable financially and not under a direct threat from the administration, you’re probably upset, but your focus is going to be on finding a way to get rid of Trump and get out of this mess without winding up POOR.
You want to know why so many federal workers are still doing their jobs despite being complicit in many of the awful things that are happening? Because they don’t have a way to pay the rent if they walk off the job. The job market is awful. The economy is in the shitter. Everything is super expensive, and they don’t want to let their families down. Want the military and federal agents to quit? Give them a guaranteed way to pay their mortgages. Find them another job.
It’s not just about luxuries and standards of living. It’s about social acceptance and beloning. People will go to insane lengths to feel like an accepted member of a group. So these workers may be unhappy, even deeply upset about the direction the country is headed in, but it’ll have to get worse before the sacrifice is worth it, because being in jail or being dead is only a little bit worse than being a poor person.
Same holds true for much of the rest of the nation. It’s hard to risk belonging, to risk being part of our society, when there’s no guarantee you won’t wind up homeless and a pariah because of it.

She shouldn’t have been put in the position to work high acuity psychiatry in her 70s. And to the day she retired she kept saying trump was going to reward her any day now. I hope those grifters rot in hell.

Unfortunately the Constitution is toothless when bad actors control anything more than like 40% of the government.

What you are seeing is the unmasked version of US politics. This is what US politics has always been, but it’s always been a lot more covert. The political parties do not have any issue with what he is doing, they only have an issue that he is so blatant with it.

Ideas can spread but also get corrected when people interact.
It used to be that people talked to each other and set the dumbasses straight whenever they spit out this kind of “politics”.
These days everyone is just angry online and they’d rather change their online network than to change their minds.
Someone should have told off Trump long ago. They didn’t, and since he chose to communicate official statements on Twitter, instead of passing it through advisers and secretaries who could advise him better, it’s only gotten worse.
Fascism is an idea that needs to die, but it’s really difficult to confront the idea when the fascists hide in their online safe spaces, like X and Truth Social, where they only interact with bootlickers and block everyone else.
I think the best way to kill fascism is to talk openly about it with other people offline.

It is important to realize that what is happening in the US is not because of any single person.
The orange baboon is but a sympthom, not the disease. I like how some YT video put it: the disassembly of the rule of law is being done by a rare and fragile coalition of multiple small but powerful private groupings on the one hand and the clueless masses on the other.

Because congress is filled with old rotten pussies
Etterra@discuss.online 18 hours ago
Because wherever there are people with power, there are those who will do ANYTHING to gain access to that power. When there’s no mechanism to FORCE those with power to over the law, then they won’t, and their cronies will be insulated to some degree from consequences. Enough people (Congress) who could force consequences are the ones benefiting from Trump’s corruption and could suffer negative consequences for turning against Trump. A lot of those guys are very old and extremely unlikely to suffer consequences if the following administration is also Republican. It’s a big ugly tangle and unless somebody is willing to just arrest the Orange Jackass and all his ghouls, nothing will change.

Because the people who didn't want him, have things to lose and are reluctant to upset their way of life in doing so. That's the American Way, is to chain and distract the populace just enough where they're interlocked in indecisiveness as to do or don't. Please do not shit on these people, I'm absolutely sure if it was entirely worth it, we would've started the 2nd Revolution by now from this tyranny that has taken hold on us.
The people who did vote for him - have nothing to lose, which is why they don't care, which is why they support everything he does.

He’s a Russian asset and race horse for international tyrants, oligarch and so on.
You’ve heard of climate science being hijacked by Big Oil, etc.
If you have serious money and can’t find your soul, you invest it in judges, politicians, shadow networks, academics, journalists, influencers, papers, even artists to push all those institutions and their effect in your favor. Divide & Conquer, psychotic narratives. etc. to keep people from anything but joining together and doing what’s actually in their interest. Hijack existing conflicts, keep people afraid or blind by pleasure, with algorithms that your bought politicians and judges just let slip.
Things like that. Republicans are just the worse breed. And it’s all reaching a tipping point. I’ve heard an expert say that if 3.5% of the population non-violently protest this shit basically shuts down. Others say it’s gonna get a whole lot worse before it gets better. I guess it’s in the stars.
Here are the main reasons (I think) people do their dirty work.

Because enough of the people who would be responsible for stopping this senile psychopath see him as THEIR senile psychopath and they’re more interested in seeing the people they don’t like get hurt than they are in preserving the rule of law or the constitution. The rest could try to send a message by pushing for articles of impeachment, but the message it sends is entirely wrong if and when he’s just fully acquitted by his ruling party.
This incidentally is a big part of why the mid-term election is going to be so important. If his shitstick cronies get thrown the fuck out then maybe something useful will actually get done about him.
