I understand not wanting to be used on tap like that.
Like, “hey I’m over my depth here and I trust you” is very different from “I’m bored I bet I could lay that guy”, which is more what it sounds like.

So, it makes a ton more sense once you’ve been the person trying to get somebody to take the lead in an intimate physical encounter.
A big part of the dynamic there is that as the person who wants to concede the initiative, you want to make sure that the other person is really actually committed to the thing you’re thinking about. Getting kissed by someone who’s thinking about smash bros isn’t fun.
You know how there’s a trope where it’s satisfying for a beloved to be able to wipe their lover’s mind of anything else by looking them in the eyes a certain way? That sense of being desired in a compelling way is really important for a lot of people.
So, when somebody makes a gesture like that, it’s intended to hit different depending on where you are chemically. If you had been completely beguiled at that point, you probably would have goggled and stammered like Don Knotts and she would have said something like “come here, sit down”.
And we all know that some people trying to get off will absolutely fake that level of interest. I think it might make sense for people looking for a longer term connection to find themselves doing this, cause one of the fastest ways to fall in love is to have emotionally connected sex.
I was once at a woman’s place and we had talked for a while and ended up on her bed with her in underwear and a bra, lying with her head on my arm and her hand on my chest, she says “I’m horny” and I think “oh whoops I better head out so she can get herself off” and LEFT.
Useless lesbian, right? But also, maybe it’s better that the two of us didn’t have sex, because I didn’t really feel compelled to, she wouldn’t have wanted to unless I had felt that way, and now we can see each other around and we might feel a little awkward around each other but we didn’t get into a mismatched situation in terms of investment that night (I think?).
I’ve been in other similar situations where I didn’t particularly care what the other person’s emotional state was and just asked them to do what I wanted done to me.
This is all subconscious in nearly all cases imo, I’ve just been doing this a long time.

Good to know that straight men do this too, cause this is an absolutely classic lesbian scenario.

Popper is considered an important historical contributor by the field, in the same way that Jacob Lister might be in surgery. Groundbreaking but their methods have been replaced.
Jeffrey Kaplan is the best current philosophy lecturer on YouTube imo. He focuses more on theories of consciousness but covers epistemology too. Bryan Magee did a fantastic interview series called The Great Philosophers that’s on YouTube.
I would actually start with sociology of science if you want the most interesting contemporary stuff. Harry Collins is fantastic, check out his recent book on LIGO. Steven Shapin’s book on the Scientific Revolution is good.
Bruno Latour is a love-him-or-hate-him figure in science studies (I love him). “Laboratory Life” and “Science in Action” are great reads imo.

I used my philosophy of science classwork all the time in my engineering career.
What constitutes proof? What kinds of questions can you answer with data? When do we consider a pattern of behavior to represent the existence of some entity?
Being able to think about these kinds of questions with clarity is really helpful in diagnosing problems in large systems.

He might have thought you were romantically interested in him, wasn’t interested, and didn’t know how to communicate that without being worried he might offend you.
There’s this concept of a relationship escalator and everybody rightly shits on how much it fucks things up on the back end of erotic relationships.
But in pretty much every kind of new relationship, whether it’s business, friendship, family, or romance, people expect to increase their commitments gradually, in coordination with the other person.
Yes, this means that most people looking to make new friends and lovers expect you to act a little less excited about getting to know them than you actually are. 🤷🏻♀️

Well those sound like people who aren’t good to open up to.
I do sympathize though, I pretended to be a guy for several decades, and my wife put exactly the same kind of duality on my that men put on women.
I was expected to be sympathetic and nurturing in some contexts and aggressive, jealous, and demanding in others, and I was just supposed to know when to switch.
And there was an amount of vulnerability I was able to display, but beyond that I’d get told to suck it up.
I think somebody needs to come up with an ad campaign that’s Therapy For Men. Big sweaty hairy guys with thick beards looking after each other’s mental health like BROs. It worked to get men to use soap.
(Seriously, I think counseling is too female-coded for a lot of men to be comfortable with it unless they’re fucking the person, or they start to want to fuck the person because they’re unused to talking about things).

But as a side effect it means you’re still allowed to photograph your own books at home as a private citizen if you own them.
Prepare to never legally own another piece of media in your life. 😄

I was at Google when it came out, I was like “sure this would be fine to use too, but everybody is on chat and Gmail and I kind of need to actually reach people…”
I think they just figured it would get dogfooded automatically because it was slicker than chat and Gmail, but under time pressure you’re just not gonna do it unless you have to.
And there was zero chance I was going to get anybody in my personal life to use it.
