To be clear these photos are from a dramatization of the execution. Here’s a Facebook post saying so, I’m sure a more in depth search would turn up a better source

He was prepared for execution by electric chair, using a bible as a booster seat because Stinney was too small for the chair.

This sentence alone says a lot about the humanity involved.

    Wretched human beings.

The USA is the only country in the world that hasn’t ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, in good part because they don’t want to have to stop executing children.

We forget how disturbingly cruel and barbarian groups of people and the state can be.

Oh, it was always worse. But it does always get better. They’ll say it about us one day, if we aren’t forward the finish line of society as it stands.

But remember that with the whole “the arch of history bends towards justice” it does not do it on its own. There is no rule in the universe that says that. It only bends if we are the ones actually bending it.

That is unfortunately not a given at all.

Yes, but I don’t completely believe this. I think it can get worse.

Whose this “we” – I’ve been anti death penalty since before I could vote because I have never been able to forget.

I would go so far as to say not only is the death penalty anti American, any one who wants the death penalty to remains needs to be added to a pool from which some is randomly executed; affirming their resolve and devotion.

It’s really weird how some people can take any kind of statement, no matter how well meant, and make it about themselves. You aren’t even the first.

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Stinney

He was tried, convicted, and sentenced to death on a single day in April 1944 and then executed by electric chair on June 16, 1944,

His grade school teacher then lied on TV 50 years later saying he witnessed the murder for money.

… this needs to be nsfw. This is a horrific image of someone’s last moments as they’re about to be murdered. People need to be able to decide if they are able to see it.

The image is from a short film: youtu.be/5iL1f-jV32A

George Stinney’s execution is an example of how terrible we can be to each other. It has been depicted on screen a couple of times and is always gut-wrenching to watch. I just wanted you to know that this is not actual footage of him.

There’s a real fuzzy line between confronting people with evidence of our brutality and just normalizing that brutality

Also, I feel like on this network more than others you’re just showing this to people who are already fully aware that horrific racist violence like this has happened and is happening

        source
      • chuckleslord@lemmy.world ⁨13⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

Black people’s lives are treated with less sanctity and respect than white people’s. Images of violence done to black bodies is normalized and spread to justify further violence and spread fear. I’m not “trying to look away”, I’m trying to denormalize the murder of a black child.

If this was a white child, their face would be blurred. This moment of fear and evil would be kept away from the public out of respect for the family. Their family wouldn’t need to fear stumbling across the photo of their last moment just so the public can learn about their dark society.

Yes, we need to confront our dirty secrets, but that doesn’t conflict with the desire to respect the victims of brutality.

Would be more accurate and help understand what the act entails.

When people tell you who they are, believe them. Nobody saying that today has any blame for what came before. Kids born in nazi Germany went on to distrust their Nazi parents and made some of the best music of the 20th century. You can afford to give some people some grace.

This is absolutely horrific and a stain on humanity itself. And there is another aspect that isn’t always brought up is cases of injustice like this. The police, lawyers, judges, and everyone else involved in the murder of this young boy, were quite literally covering up for the real murderer(s) of those girls. Whoever killed those girls went free, perhaps to kill again, because of the racist motivations of those involved in the trial and execution of this poor, scared, kid.

you’re missing your target. The enemy is the capital & its goons. It’s important to know that so that you can distinguish between friend and foe. If you are from the USA, the inevitable conflict will have you bear arms, and it will be very important for you to know who your enemy is. If you shoot all that is white, you’re not going to be a very dependable ally.

Power almost always needs a scapegoat. They are diversifying lately from people of color, and pushing immigrants again, along with other minotlrities like LGBT, and of course anyone who thinks their fascism is a bad idea. Just look at what trump is doing regarding educational institutions, media organizations, and law firms. Critical thinking is likely to get you killed.
