Bucha Bull to me.
Literally never.
Were not the target market.
We’re the target market to end.
We’re too.
Um no
Jeff Bezos said the quiet part out loud - hopes that you’ll give up you won’t be able to afford a PC and will be forced to rent one from the cloud
“You will own nothing and LIKE IT!”
Yeah go screw yourself Tech weirdo’s. You could help us, instead you just bleed us dry for profits.
As @TheReturnOfPEB@reddthat.com stated. This would never work in the US without major overhaul to existing infastructure. I’m rocking a 32/32 Mbps atm. My parents? they get 5. I have to enable steam to limit itself to 512kb/s download or I will take down their network as a whole. Remind me how a cloud based PC is going to work in this state.
Easy, they will just be locked out of having access to computing, that way they can only get their news and information from right-wing AM talk radio.
You’ll have to rent a starlink from Elon, so he can keep an eye on your habits too
the thought of dynamic pricing on-top of the outrageous base pricing makes me shudder. All that for a network that will support Elons viewpoints and not have decent stability. Man I can’t wait.
Well, if we go absurdly simple you only need to send user input and receive images or something that fairly easily could be rendered as an image (html?).
800dpi mouse sends about 24kbps, keyboard input is negligible. So theoretically speaking, you can do absolutely everything on such a remote PC but with a screen of 240p.
Absolutely miserable.
Easy. Remember a few years ago when google advertised that they’d have negative latency allowing you to play your games everywhere, on every device, in better conditions than on your own device? Just like that. You just have to hire enough salespeople to convince reality to bend backward.
Wait did this actually happen?
I just had to look it up, that’s actually really funny as a way to try and hide latency issues. this won’t work well with bad networks though, I could see 1 or 2 frames being delayed or missing but, that’s still a funny way of trying to fix an issue that is a pipeline problem.
Tbf RDP works pretty well for basic desktop stuff even over slow links. I’m sure there’s a protocol out there even more optimized for use cases like this.
So, these idiots didn’t learn their lesson the first time with the colossal flop that was Stadia and now they want to convince us that, this time for sure, we really don’t want to own our own hardware and cloud computing is the future?
These guys should not be getting a single bent penny for convincing people to switch over to cloud computing when their AI slop machines are responsible for the scarcity that is causing hardware prices to be completely uneconomical.
if they keep pushing it, eventually the younger generation will just comply.
we need to continue to educate the new generations that the rich/CEO/tech freaks like bozo cannot be trusted, they lie, and their goal is to make us own nothing and pay for it.
make it clear what their true goal is. media cannot be trusted to assist in this. citizens of the world must be loud at every moment we can be.
Stadia was Google and Bezos runs Amazon, who does have their own game streaming service, Luna, which is still operational.
I haven’t used either of those, but I’ve been using GeForce Now recently while waiting for a replacement PSU and I have to say, it works really well. The on-device apps (Samsung monitor, LG TV) leave a lot to be desired but once you’re in a game, the latency is negligible for me and they’re running games high enough that it looks as good as when I was running it on my own 3090.
None of that to say I disagree with you, but I do like that the option exists; it’s not black and white, good and bad. But it SHOULD be just that - AN OPTION. Not the only choice left after AI has demolished the market.
Take solace in the fact the AI bubble will pop and all these “sold” wafers will suddenly flood the market as they turn to consumer brands to try and offload them. I don’t think we’re headed for this “all compute in the cloud” future he wants. Not yet.
The unfortunate thing I’ve heard is that the chips made for AI/datacenter use won’t be able to be repurposed for consumer tech.
I would rather never touch a computer again than rent one.
The video where Bezos says that is from Dec 4th 2024 sooooo
Fair fair. I missed that
Murica is a deranged shithole. Linux is our only way out of this. To all hardware manifacturers: Build your goddamn drivers for it and free us!
~cry in the capitalist vacuum…
Why in the fuck did we move away from mainframes and dumb terminals in the first place, Bozes? Now back to that, but… cloud based, and we pay you to fuckin own everything? Get bent!
This is actually terrifying. Switching to Linux will help us for a while, and the community can take us a long way, but eventually the hardware in physical PCs won’t be able to perform basic functions.
A phaseout of physical hardware would also entail a phaseout of physical accessories. You can buy external offline storage for a while, but eventually it’ll all get bought up on the used market or otherwise fail in 5-10 years after the last hard drives get made. Eventually you will lose all your files and have no way to back them up. No Jellyfin server for movies you legally ripped, no GOG installers for games you legally bought, no music library or ebooks either, they’ll all be gone.
Our only hope, really, is small businesses continuing to build physical PCs with equal power as the cloud devices. But would parts manufacturers let them? The current situation with data centers, SDDs, and RAM shows that parts manufacturers are increasingly only interested in selling to other large businesses. Consumers can’t boycott that.
I fully expect to be unable to access my bank or make appointments or get meaningful employment if I don’t switch over in 10 to 20 years.
Why should we need “equal power” to some hypothetical “cloud pc”? We did video cutting, 3D rendering, webbrowsing, videochatting and so on in the late 90s with PCs whose CPU speeds where measured in Mhz not Ghz… with the PCs build in the last ~15 years i really, really see no danger of running out of useable devices within my lifetime (i am slightly over 40 now).
If there will be some time in the future when its only possible to get “meaningful employment” or “make appointments” using some cloud based shitstain i will happily spend my last days doing my part in helping to burn down this dystopic society.
This is why tn EU needs to invest all into developing a RISC-V hardware chain asap. Proprietary CPUs is the ultimate chain and shackles.
We also will need a GPU with the same openness. If only Mali wasn’t sold off to ARM.
Imagine a world where you have been blacklisted from their services because you posted online about the corruption he feeds.
now imagine how difficult it will be to get or keep a job where you can’t use a computer when 85% of all jobs now require AI “skills”.
don’t worry, you can work in one of the many warehouses at Amazon…
Nah I’ll be like the old nonna who is the only one who can only make the pannetone the traditional way, but I can connect a GPU to the mobo
So that’s what they meant by techno feudalism.
Jeff Bezos said the quiet part out loud — hopes that you’ll give up your PC to rent one from the cloud
We’re so doomed. A lot of people will probably buy into this because they can’t possibly be inconvenienced by owning a computer.
I was talking about AI with someone the other day and they said, “Wow, in the future we probably won’t be able to work without a subscription to ChatGPT. Oh, well.” Like. wat. teh. faq. People see the convenience trap, but can’t be bothered to do anything about it. I hate this timeline.
They also want our cars, they want our homes, they want our lives.
In a sense he’s late. A lot of people already have - phones and tablets and chromebooks.
Millions of people simply do not own a traditional computer.
The rest of us, well, cold dead hands and all that.
Sure, we’ve all seen how the de-centralized internet became centralized around a few big-tech and what that does for availability. When he turns off the cloud-pc I’ve got nothing, and all I can do about it is … also nothing. So if my data isn’t on my hardware at a location I can access 24/7 it really isn’t my data!!
Money has never bought brains
I demand you give me control of your entire life, you can trust me.
IMHO this is no different than neurolink. My computers do a great deal of my thinking for me. That’s why FOSS is so important.
Luna has what a million users world wide? Its a drop in the bucket. Stadia failed. Game pass streaming sucks ass. Its never going to take off. How much more money do these cunts need??
All of it
No thanks, I’m good.
Bezos isn’t a visionary, he’s a recationary. His opinions are worth less than the toilet paper I use to wipe my asshole with. Ya’ll need to get off Lex Luthor’s nutbag.
There is no cloud, just someone else computer.
Yup, Jordan was right, they want you to rent everything.
You will own nothing and you will be happy.
lol, no.
As they say in my county: “go and die far from here, so I can’t smell you”.
Fucking parasite.
I’m not sure how, but billionaires need to have their billions forcibly taken and redirected toward the public good. If humanity wants any future other than techno-feudalist fascism we need to figure out how to destroy the global billionaire class permanently within the next few decades or we are gonna be fucked for centuries. You’ll rent everything and own nothing, they will bleed everyone dry, and if you rise up to disrupt the system you’ll get a robot boot on your neck.
I feel like this is the real 100 men VS 1 gorilla or whatever. A half dozen billionaires VS a half dozen billion people.
I hope we wrench our future from the cold grasp of these ever nonsatisfied greed monsters, sooner than later preferably.
Something something cold, dead hands
At the same time I’m seeing a bunch of ads for “hardware is getting too expensive, use Akamai cloud for your gaming etc instead, now with AI blah blah!”
Bitch, you’re the reason hardware is so expensive!
Create the problem, then offer an over-priced ‘solution’

fucking microsoft too. they’re enshittifying things so much because they can charge you rent to compute instead
