I used to share an office with a contractor in the UK.

Their sickie policy was that you didn’t get paid at all for the first four days of sickness, but for periods of five days or longer you got paid the statutory sick pay rate.

It was to disincentivise the “one day wonder” sickies after a night in the piss or when you couldn’t be arsed going to work - but predictably, all it did was guarantee that people would be off for at least five days so they got something out of it.

    Absolutely backwards.

Reminds me of an old office that changed their policy so that you needed a doctors note for even a single sick day. They thought it would keep people from calling out for a day for headaches. All it did was cause all previous 1 day sicknesses to be extended to 3-5 days because no doctor here writes a note for anything less.

I’m a school bus driver, and when a driver quits or retires they get paid for any accrued sick leave. The idea, of course, is that you don’t want people pretending to be sick for their last week or two on the job and leaving us with unexpected absences we have to find substitutes for. However, this payoff is $7 less per hour than our regular rate - so of course, everybody that leaves pretends to be sick for their last week or two on the job in order to get their full pay. It’s just such a fucking braindead policy.

Is it a fake sick leave if I need a break to fix my mental health? I don’t think so.

    source
    • FallenGrove@lemmy.world ⁨11⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

Bad mental health is a sickness. If people have mental illness they don’t just sit there and deal with it, they go to a doctor to get it fixed or at least under control. I have no qualms in talking a sick day off to get away from it all when I’m overwhelmed. If my employer says otherwise, then fuck them, I’ll find a place to work where they respect that.

I dont make enough to afford a shrink, But I do get one day a sick leave per month to use when I can’t get out of bed.

Trust me, I would love to see a head doctor, But this is the best I can do right now

It doesn’t mean I don’t have mental illness it means i’m doing the best I can with what I got

Our company has a policy that if you’re sick for 2 days or more, you have to have a doctors note to return. So faking sick comes with a price tag for me. Also, any time I’ve ever joked about being sick, I actually end up sick. I’ll just call around and get someone to cover for me, then tell my supervisor I’m taking a personal day instead of earning some bad karma.

Just getting a doctor’s note costs something in the US? Whenever I need a note I call my GP and ask the receptionist to write me one. The doctor doesn’t even do anything except sign the paper that the receptionist prints out! Charging for that seems crazy

      • Bubs@lemmy.zip ⁨9⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

I don’t think they mean an actual price

I’ve also worked at places where the boss demanded a doctor’s note to return to work. I just said “No, I’m not doing that.” That’s always been the end of it. I returned to work once I was well and continued we all continued on as if it never really was about health and safety in the first place. Lots of places have policies on the books that are either outright illegal or unenforceable, but they get people to tow the line out of fear. If a few of us call their bluff, it’s better for them to quietly move on so that we don’t escalate the situation and shine a light on that policy. If word got around that the policy was unenforceable, they wouldn’t be able to bully the rest into compliance.

Moreover, not every “sick leave” is something that is contagious, migraines for example. I’ve even taken a sick day preemptively because I got to work and discovered that I’d have to work in close proximity to someone that was actually sick and contagious, but refused to stay home.

Also, if the company is requiring a professional evaluation in order to work, surely that is something that will be fully expensed to the company. I suppose that dynamic would be different under universal healthcare. But sending people that are recovering from a contagious disease that will resolve itself on its own would still be an incredible strain (and an unnecessary one) on the entire system.

Mini rant incoming. It fucking sucks that it’s seen as sus to be sick for just one day. More often than not when my period cramps are too painful to stand up, it’s bearable by day two, but I stay home that day anyway to make it more believable. It’s similar with so many other pain conditions. Hell, I have chronic UTIs that are often too painful for me to move for just, like, two hours. But explain that to your boss.

I’m a school bus driver. Our district has a policy that for paid holidays (e.g. Labor Day) you have to show up for the work day prior and the work day following, or you don’t get paid for that holiday. This is ostensibly to prevent people from stretching a three-day weekend into four or five consecutive days off by taking pretend sick leave. I was a white-collar worker (programmer) for my whole career before this and never encountered any kind of rule like this.

    source
    • GTG3000@programming.dev ⁨4⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

Why would people having a long holiday be an issue in the first place?

      source
      • ChickenLadyLovesLife@lemmy.world ⁨3⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

Well, it is kinda bad when we can’t get a substitute for a driver. The day after the Eagles won the super bowl last year, more than a third of our drivers called in “sick” and we had to cancel a bunch of runs.

I prefer monday. Fridays are often when nothing new is started and people leave early. So full pay for half day of easier than normal work.

Mondays are when shit is started and they’re often extra long

      • Wolf314159@startrek.website ⁨11⁩ ⁨hours⁩ ago

LOL, not everywhere is like this. Fridays are always the day an emergency project gets dropped in my lap that absolutely must be done before the next Monday because somebody else has a deadline they need to meet (that they’ve known about for months) and they need our work for a critical part of it, but they never seem to remember until Thursday night.
