Yep completely agree, if only we didn’t export LNG with zero royalties we’d be rich like the saudis
- Comment on Luckily work paid for this tank full... 1 week ago:
Australia is as wide as, and is taller than USA. It’s a large country
We have one main train line across the country horizontally, and two vertically. The vast majority is uninhabited.
We’re talking about an infrastructure project that has to supply reliable high voltage power across the entire country (4000 km), build multiple new train lines across the entire country, and even then you still need trucks for distribution within states as rail is not capable of last mile delivery

I think that’s probably a little more difficult for interstate runs

If only we had electric trucks hauling goods around the country

Police will allege the man was under significant fatigue

- Comment on The RBA faces its 'most complicated' rates call in years. What could it mean for you? 2 weeks ago:
One of the RBA’s jobs is to combat inflation. It has very very few tools to do so, but they are broadly powerful. They would not typically care about home loans, but the housing bubble is now so big it is a major throat to our economy as a whole, so they have to not cause major and rapid defaults.
High energy and fuel prices drive inflation higher. All goods require energy to produce, and fuel to transport.
Increasing the cash rate decreases inflation because it makes debt more expensive. Higher interest rates lead to less investment in companies and the stock market because money in the bank provides a higher rate of return, which leads to less growth.
Higher interest rates then lead to reduced wages as businesses have less demand for staff, don’t have investment for new projects, and need to focus on their debt.
Then you see reduction in consumer spending. People are making less money. People are paying more interest on their debt. People with money are putting it in the bank and not spending it because interest rates are better. It slows down the entire economy, which stops the price of goods going up so fast.
This can easily lead to a recession if not carefully managed. People are struggling to begin with, but to combat these high prices all the RBA can really do is increase the cash rate to make debt more expensive and money in banks not invested more lucrative

This smells like a politically driven extrapolation of the last two years
Tough economic times that impact profits under labor is somehow spun into wow look the poor are getting richer, thanks labor

Lemmy.ml is super commie and Nazis are anti commie, I don’t understand how this is a coherent line of thinking
- Comment on Are users who openly parrot literal Nazi talking points allowed here? 3 weeks ago:
The “Nazi talking points” that aren’t mentioned could be a bait, and be something as simple as anti communism or economic reforms that stimulate production through public works (e.g. the autobahn)
They may not be the things the Nazis were hated for…

- Comment on Finally fixing capital gains tax is good – but linking it to another tax cut for Australia’s rich is bollocks | Greg Jericho 5 weeks ago:
Selling them off when they vest is subject to taxation as income at the point years after they’re awarded, down or up. You take the risk (not that you have a choice in the tech sector) and you get fucked both ways for it

- Comment on Finally fixing capital gains tax is good – but linking it to another tax cut for Australia’s rich is bollocks | Greg Jericho 5 weeks ago:
A lot of people, especially those getting laid off by the thousand in tech at the moment, are paid in shares instead of cash
These people already get double taxed, once essentially when the share rights vest and are exercised (e.g. years after they are awarded) they’re taxed as income at the current value despite not having been sold. Then taxed again when sold, as capital gains
If you make a loss on your shares paid as income by the time they are sold, bad luck, you have to gamble on other stocks/assets and make a large win greater than your losses to ever see the tax back again

That’s the claim atd I used to echo it, but with near daily walks (weather permitting) plus hikes when weekends permit, plus gardening, I’m still deficient. Same story for almost everyone I work and exercise with.
There’s either more to it or the claim doesn’t hold up empirically

Article suggesting that the body should never have any sort of tan because that’s dangerous
Meanwhile everyone is vitamin d deficient, developing auto immune diseases from low levels
Animals seek out sunlight to sit in, look at your cat or dog
You don’t need to go overboard cooking yourself for more than a few minutes but advocating for literally no sun exposure is so stupid?
