So sad that Space-X, which has done such incredible things to advance spaceflight, is run by this idiot. It’s a testament to the intelligence and hard work of the engineers and scientists working there, despite him, I suppose.
Renacles@discuss.tchncs.de 1 year ago
He’s not even there, ever since he bought Twitter he’s been camping there coming up with new ways to bankrupt the platform.
I’d guess he never actually did anything in Space X except for publicity stunts.
Syndic@feddit.de 1 year ago
I can’t imagine how happy the people at SpaceX were when he got into the whole Twitter mud pile. There’s nothing worse for a company than a stupid CEO who way overestimates his own capability and constantly micromanages shit that a CEO shouldn’t even care about.
MeanEYE@lemmy.world 1 year ago
That would be some interesting observation to be done. Imagine statistic showing whenever he leaves for another company, income of the previous jumps.

The falcon 9 is an amazing launch vehicle, I’ll give them that.
But starship reeks of Elon saying some dumb shit and forcing employees to implement it.
The booster is just a falcon booster but 3 times bigger and with higher performance engines, so that makes sense as long as they have a fucking flame diverter like every other big launch vehicle. But starship itself is insane for a human rated launch vehicle. A single piece second stage with no launch abort system. If you manage to survive the flight and get back for the landing burn, you have to rely on engines that will have ignited multiple times, and pray to whatever god you feel exists in that moment that the engines will work the whole way down. If, and right now it’s a big if, you touch down, there is a 30% chance based on test flights that the vehicle will set itself on fire. During that fire, your only option for getting off before a detonation is to get on a fucking elevator and lower yourself slowly towards the engines, where the fire is.
They want to land this on the moon, 240,000 miles away from the nearest fire truck, landing pads, mechanics, and fuel tanks. Oh and it’s supposed to be ready by December 2025 for the first moon landing since the 70s.
I feel like I’m taking crazy pills. We know how to have reliable engines in space. We know how to design landers and crew capsules that are easy to exit and have limited failure points. None of this knowledge is being used to design starship/HLS for the moon mission. This thing is going to get people killed, I guarantee it. And once we kill the first people on or near the moon, we’re gonna be done with moon missions for another 50 years. Failure is not an option here. Probably the biggest issue I have with musk at spaceX is that they don’t believe in that philosophy. To spaceX, failure is a success. The starship test flight was supposed to be a suborbital flight, and it blew up after about 5 minutes, and they cheered. Everyone talked about how much data they were gonna get. Like they should need data from a real test flight to design a launch vehicle. They’ve been doing launches to orbit for over 10 years, they know how to do it. But somehow failing to complete the mission objective was seen as a success on a test flight for the vehicle that’s supposed to land people on the moon in 2 years.

A big part of a start up CEO’s job is just raising money and talking to media. SpaceX still (usually) loses money to grow like a start up even if it’s obviously a massive operation. I would think that’s his primary role there.
Basically, all evidence points to him knowing rich people, not rocket science. (Or truck science or social media or monkey torture.)
alienanimals@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Downvote Musk spam.
The billionaire doesn’t need your help ensuring him and his businesses stay in the 24 hour news cycle. Don’t be a useful idiot.
rab@lemmy.ca 1 year ago
Yea this isn’t news. I wish mods would delete posts like this.
atx_aquarian@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Also doesn’t strike me as techy. Talking about better battery tech that might improve the cars’ range or something, that’d strike me as tech-related. “Company tries to blame people’s work locations for slumping sales” is not tech.
BeatTakeshi@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Musk’s basically a troll
wraithcoop@lemmy.one 1 year ago
If you really don’t think it belongs don’t just downvote it, report it as well.
RememberTheApollo@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Couldn’t possibly be instances like this, could it?
Or the price premium for FSD that doesn’t actually work?
Or the reports of poor build quality?
Or the difficulty in getting service?
The lack of customer service?
Or maybe people don’t want to support a company run by an unstable dickhead?
paddirn@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I honestly would love to buy an electric car, but Musk himself is probably the number one reason I’ll never touch a Tesla. All the other stuff just reinforces why I shouldn’t buy one, but just not wanting to give any money to that dickhead is my primary reason for not going with one. Maybe all the other car company execs are dipshits too, but they at least have the sense to not talk so much.
CosmicTurtle@lemmy.world 1 year ago
For me, it was when reports were coming out that Tesla actually made repairs harder and didn’t allow shops to repair their vehicles without voiding the warranty.
It’s like if Apple sold a car. Proprietary shit can just get the fuck out.
poprocks@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Musk is why we won’t consider Tesla when we get to that point. It’s also why we won’t use starlink.
Speculater@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Your last reason is the reason I sold mine. Yes they already got my money, but I took one new customer away from their new sells.
unconsciousvoidling@sh.itjust.works 1 year ago
I think it’s because he’s trashing it’s brand by acting like a little nazi.
CyberDine@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I wanted a Tesla when I thought Musk was pretty cool with everything he was doing with SpaceX.
Then the pandemic hit and I learned exactly who he was. There’s no way I’d ever support Musk now, let alone voluntarily give him my money.
Dude looks like he snifs his own farts, and he likes the smell.
ashok36@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Same boat here. I want a new car and tesla was top of my list. I wouldn’t be caught dead in one now while Musk is in charge.
Toribor@corndog.social 1 year ago
I think it’s because he’s trashing it’s brand by acting like a little nazi.
I only know two people with Tesla’s but both of them are embarrassed to be driving around in one and aren’t planning to buy another one when they replace it. Obviously that’s just anecdotal, but if Tesla can’t separate themselves from Musk while he’s trashing his personal brand and right while a ton of competing electric vehicles are coming on the market… they are going to have a bad time.
RojoSanIchiban@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Yeah, no, I’m not remotely embarrassed to be driving a Tesla. It’s the best car I’ve ever owned, and I’d happily buy another, knowing full-well that Musk had nothing to do with its production.
That said, the Tesla board absolutely needs to kick his ass out, and the more he spews bullshit, the more likely it is I’ll buy another brand.
RagingRobot@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I just bought a brand new electric car and wouldn’t dare get a Tesla now because of him. I got a Cadillac lyric inside and it’s been awesome.
Harvey656@lemmy.world 1 year ago

david@feddit.uk 1 year ago
Oh, I thought it was the CEO’s online reputation and the fact the people are hearing more and more that their after sales service is shit, eg being charged £17000 for a new motor which is apparently the driver’s fault for driving it in the rain. In Scotland.
cambridge-news.co.uk/…/couple-charged-17000-tesla…
Apparently the problem has been known for some time:
TBi@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I remember seeing a video of a Model S in water and Elon boasting the car would float and use its wheels to propel along the water.
GenEcon@lemm.ee 1 year ago
I know a lot of people not buying a Tesla because of Musk.
gravitas_deficiency@sh.itjust.works 1 year ago
It’s a battery they’re being charged for not a motor, but yeah
david@feddit.uk 1 year ago
You’re right.
Shgrizz@lemmy.world 1 year ago
No, it’s because the main thing teslas had going for them is that they were cool. That is no longer the case.
Spellinbee@lemmy.world 1 year ago
100% that, plus more competition.
There was a point where I had planned on getting a tesla for my next car, but now I’m avoiding it like the plague.
Wogi@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Next year? I think. A few manufacturers will adopt Tesla’s charging platform as standard, effectively creating a North American standard and giving Tesla the W. But this is a good thing, Tesla’s supercharger stations are the only ones that consistently work. The cars are garbage, but they got the charging thing down. So if you’re in the market now, maybe wait for that change to drop. In the short term it’s via an adapter but in the next few years you’ll be able to plug your car directly in to the Tesla stations.
telllos@lemmy.world 1 year ago
If you can choose between, a BMW, a Mercedes, or any high end brand when you buy electric, why would you get a tesla? Then it’s the exact same for the budget. They used to be the only good option, they’re not anymore.
Then there’s the fact that if you buy a tesla you associate with Musk.
Viper_NZ@lemmy.nz 1 year ago
I dislike Elon as much as the next guy, but this just isn’t true.
The charging infrastructure for Teslas is miles above the rest for much of the world. The electric drive trains are some of the most efficient and long lasting. And outside of America their pricing is quite competitive.
spongebue@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I’m totally with you on the charging (and don’t have one myself) but as for the drivetrain, is one really that much more efficient than another? There’s not a lot of energy lost to heat, noise, and whatever else that ICEs have. Most of it is in (for example) the body’s aerodynamics, no? And as far as how long they last, most of them are about 10 years old, tops? Hard to judge that one just yet (yeah, the Leafs suck already but they don’t have a battery management system)
tim1996@lemm.ee 1 year ago
I like them but their worth like half of what they ask. Also why are they so fucking large hello model 2 plese. European roads don’t fit american monsters.

Let’s all hope car companies will be worth less. They would work just fine being worth 50% less, and this guy acting like he doesn’t have billions if we stripped him for 50% of his own wealth.
Kecessa@sh.itjust.works 1 year ago
Funny how people find other reasons why but no one mentions the fact that the market did exactly what Musk wanted it to do and other manufacturers started producing EV cars so Tesla isn’t alone in the game anymore and it’s much easier to find dealers for well established brands. Heck, I live in a city with a dealer of every brands (even Volvo) except Tesla, the closest place to get one maintained is 200km away!
