- Comment on iOS 17.2 hints at Apple moving towards letting users sideload apps from outside the App Store 1 year ago:
Yeah, I know maybe like two other people who use Firefox. Everybody else uses Chrome. And it’s been that way for the last decade or so.
I still prefer Firefox, but I worry about its future because most people, including web developers, just don’t care.
- Comment on iOS 17.2 hints at Apple moving towards letting users sideload apps from outside the App Store 1 year ago:
Development of IE stagnated after Microsoft put Netscape out of business, because Microsoft got complacent, until Mozilla resurrected the remains of Netscape and saved the web. Then Chrome came along and Google convinced almost everybody to switch to it, including competing browsers like Opera. Chrome was originally based on Safari’s WebKit (a fork of Konqueror’s rendering engine KHTML), but then Google forked it (Blink) so they’d maintain control of it.
From what I’ve heard, most web devs only test on Chrome since every browser other than Firefox and Safari is based on it. And nobody seemed to care until very recently, because they didn’t think a browser based on an open source project could possibly be a problem.
I’m honestly not surprised any of this happened, and I stick to Firefox and Safari myself, but I do worry about the ramifications of getting a real Chrome on the iPhone and iPad. I never liked Chrome and don’t want to be forced to use it.
- Comment on iOS 17.2 hints at Apple moving towards letting users sideload apps from outside the App Store 1 year ago:
This is the last thing holding Google back from total domination of the web browser space. You know most people will just download Chrome when something doesn’t work, since they already use it on their PC/Mac.
While I don’t think that holding users hostage is the best thing to do, the reality is that enough people just don’t care, and the iPhone and iPad’s popularity forces web devs to make their sites work on Safari and not just Chrome. Once a real Chrome is available on iOS, all bets are off.

From my perspective, the Fediverse is full of people who think Biden is the greatest president ever, that we should stay locked down in our houses for the rest of our lives, that everything should be free or provided by the government, and that if you disagree with anyone on anything, you’re automatically a Trump supporter and a Nazi. (I don’t like Trump or his cult, btw.)
I do have a PC with Linux, but I can see where you’re coming from. Unfortunately, Linux isn’t for everybody.

Ice Cubes, Mammoth, and Mona are on this list either. Ice Cubes is the app that got me to actually use Mastodon regularly.

I agree. I definitely noticed that the event (correctly) targeted people who are still on Intel. A few YouTubers laughed about the Intel references, comparing them to breaking up with an ex, but I think that was the right call.
- Comment on Apple expected to post fourth consecutive quarterly sales decline Thursday 1 year ago:
It’ll pick up again, I’m sure. The M1 family fixed almost everything wrong with the Mac, so people were eager to get it, and now we’re set for a while. I’m personally going to hold onto my M1 Pro for at least a couple more years.
- Comment on Apple expected to post fourth consecutive quarterly sales decline Thursday 1 year ago:
Yeah, everybody who wants an iPhone has one, and most people aren’t upgrading every year, despite what the stereotypes say.
And as far as the Mac goes, most people who wanted Apple Silicon upgraded when the M1 was the hot new thing. People held off on buying a new Mac in the latter half of the 2010s because of the keyboard and thermal issues, and once Apple Silicon was announced at WWDC in 2020, we knew the Intel Macs’ days were numbered. Most of us bought an M1-based Mac once the model we wanted came out, since the M1 models essentially fixed what was wrong with the Mac.

Yup, I’ve seriously gotten into arguments with people who insist on tipping the doctor.
- Comment on Don't forget to tip your gas station 1 year ago:
You’ve never gotten into an argument with someone who says they tip their mechanic and doctor and thinks everybody should do the same?
There absolutely are people in the US who believe that everybody you interact with as a customer should be tipped because they believe all the propaganda from the likes of Readers Digest and Wall Street Journal. They believe everybody must be tipped because covid and “How are those jobs any different from being a server? It’s a SERVICE!” It’s beyond ridiculous. I worked in retail and food service (not tipped) for a long time and would have been embarrassed to have to resort to begging for tips.
Tip culture worship is real. I’ve run into plenty of people online and offline who think that tips should be mandatory everywhere, of all walks of life.

Still blows my mind that a co-founder of a popular (at the time) site decided to copy a guy who knows nothing about social media and is running it into the ground.
Yeah, I know spez is an asshole, but it’s still bizarre.

If it’s any consolation, the owner of Squabbles, the site a ton of people praised during the Great Rexxit because Lemmy is too confusing, changed the name to Squabblr and fired all the other admins because he doesn’t believe in hate speech.

I had three accounts at one point, but lately I’ve only been using this one. The first instance I tried could never see any content because it was small. I then joined lemmy.world, and I could see plenty of content… when it wasn’t down. This one seems to be working well for me.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the active user count could have been explained by people trying different instances.

- Comment on Google’s claim that search users have choice is “bogus,” Microsoft CEO tells judge 1 year ago:
Absolutely. I’m not buying the “fair and square” argument. Firefox won over IE fair and square, by being better in every way, but that didn’t last long enough.
- Comment on Google’s claim that search users have choice is “bogus,” Microsoft CEO tells judge 1 year ago:
Ever try using Google’s sites in Firefox or Safari? Most people use Google services and started using Chrome because of Google hounding them to switch. Hell, every major site says to just use Chrome now, and if a real Chrome ever comes out for iPhone, people will just download Chrome because it’s what they use on their computer.
Sincerely, a frustrated Firefox and Safari user
- Comment on Google’s claim that search users have choice is “bogus,” Microsoft CEO tells judge 1 year ago:
And the fact that Chrome has a virtual monopoly on the browser market isn’t going to help them either. Other than Firefox and Safari, every other browser is Chrome, and most web devs only test on Chrome.
It’s IE all over again, and I’m a bit scared that iOS’s app store restrictions are the only thing stopping Chrome from being a complete monopoly.
- Comment on I want Android to get a lot better so I'm telling people to buy an iPhone 15 1 year ago:
Yes, I’m aware of that. But within the Linux community, the majority seem to prefer Android since it’s based on Linux specifically, and it’s not Apple. I also like macOS partly because of its BSD heritage.
- Comment on I want Android to get a lot better so I'm telling people to buy an iPhone 15 1 year ago:
Yeah, I personally prefer SSH for this task, and I also like that it works with both Linux and Mac wirelessly.
- Comment on I want Android to get a lot better so I'm telling people to buy an iPhone 15 1 year ago:
Say what you will, but this article actually does a pretty good job summing up why I don’t want to switch back to Android after trying my first iPhone. As a longtime Linux user, I naturally thought I’d be using Android for the foreseeable future, since it’s Linux under the hood.
One of my friends got her first iPhone, and she talked me into giving it a try, and while I was lost for a while, I was quickly blown away by how much better everything worked. And knowing that I’ll get the latest software the same day as every other iPhone user, for at least five years, is pretty awesome.
Android could be a great thing, but manufacturers rely way too heavily on proprietary modifications to both the UI and drivers and have no incentive to provide updates for as long as Apple does, because they want you to buy a new phone. The fragmentation among Android manufacturers is real too. I don’t want to have to root my phone and reflash the OS just to get a usable phone either.
Look, I know tons of people on the Internet are like “lol apple sux” but there is truth to this article. If you love Android, or flashing a custom OS, I’m certainly not going to tell you you’re wrong. It’s just not my cup of tea anymore.

Sure. It’s called the Cooperative Eye Hypothesis.
www.livescience.com/4299-eyes-alluring.html
Some researchers have called it into question fairly recently: phys.org/…/2021-06-cooperative-eye-hypothesis.htm…
I learned most of this in psychology classes years ago. There is also a Wikipedia article on the topic. I’m not an expert at all, but I find this stuff fascinating.

Facial expressions are a powerful form of communication. Faces (especially eyes) are so important to communication in the human brain that we see faces in places (pareidolia).
There is also a theory that we evolved to have the whites of our eyes visible so others can see where you’re looking and react appropriately (especially in the case of danger).

And the rich have the rest of us bickering amongst ourselves about Team Red vs. Team Blue, and social media exacerbated this. News flash, if any of them actually cared, we wouldn’t be in this mess.
Team Red has their side blaming immigrants and liberals for everything, while Team Blue has their side convinced that everybody on Team Blue is infallible just because Team Red exists.
