Or don’t buy it and support the brand?
- Comment on unRaid is NOT switching to a subscription model 2 months ago:
Try Emby. Hardware acceleration works out of the box. It is paid though but I’m very happy with it for past few years.

I have similar setup but without PROXMOX. I tried it but never saw the benefit. Using ZFS for bitrot protection.
- Comment on Services to host on a retired laptop? 2 months ago:
Syncthing isnt a backup. Its just a synchronisation tool. If you delete a file it gets deleted everywhere.
- Comment on Apple employees outnumbered customers at Vision Pro launch in San Francisco's Union Square 3 months ago:
They are probably just being pedantic and saying “but those punters didn’t buy so they aren’t customers…”
- Comment on YSK about the condensation pipe on your gas furnace 3 months ago:
Regarding your comment on insulation. It’s amazing how many people don’t realise that insulation is important in cold and warm climates. Keeps the cold out or the heat out, reducing all bills!

I thought it was already released in EU.

What’s the alternative?
- Comment on EV Batteries Are Dangerous to Repair. Here’s Why Mechanics Are Doing So Anyway 4 months ago:
We have an BMW i3. 8 years old. Battery is fine. But car is written off now because the inverter failed. 11k€ repair. Worst part is that due to BMW software locks it’s almost impossible for third party repair to work on the car. Any replaced part needs to be “blessed” by BMW.

Totally agree this is like an escape room you didn’t sign up for. “Please solve the following clues to open door”

I tried downloading and the website says the download was quarantined. Anyone else see this? I was able to download anyway.

Good read and good points. Thanks for sharing/ranting!
- Comment on €45,000 for a heat pump installation in Germany -- really? 5 months ago:
I agree with you. But there are breathable insulation types for these older houses. So they can be used. These are more expensive so should have higher tax breaks when applied to houses that need them.
Also I agree with the wearing extra clothing part. One extra jumper never hurt anyone.
- Comment on 8GB RAM on M3 MacBook Pro 'Analogous to 16GB' on PCs, Claims Apple 6 months ago:
Maybe it’s true, but a better headline would be “our systems come with 16gb as standard, which feels like 32gb on windows.”
So you get a good amount of ram, which feels better because It’s a Mac.

I remember seeing a video of a Model S in water and Elon boasting the car would float and use its wheels to propel along the water.

I’ll cancel if they do that here. Heck I’ll probably just cancel anyway.

CasaOS looks interesting. But i prefer OpenMediaVault for the moment.
- Comment on Ex-Linus Tech Tips employee alleges mistreatment and poor conditions: “no one gets a break” - Dexerto 8 months ago:
I replied this in another thread. Which was downvoted…
It really feels like the pitchforks are out. People want blood and don’t care if the allegations are true or not.
Probably mistakes were made, hopefully just innocent mistakes or bad communication. But it really feels like people don’t care. They see LTT doing well and want to tear them down, even if bringing LTT down will be bad for everyone.
I’ve had a disgruntled employee before. Their version of events was very different to how the rest of the team saw it. If something innocent could have been taken badly it was. I’m not saying that happened here. But let’s investigate and presume innocence.
- Comment on Tesla exaggerated EV range so much that drivers thought cars were broken 9 months ago:
Every road test I’ve seen has shown Tesla cars being more efficient and getting more range than other manufacturers. But I do question the results. I have a BMW i3. I always get about 2/3 of the official range. Always been happy with that. But people complain about the range while having the temperature at max in winter (with t shirt on) and then AC set to freezing in the summer (wearing a jumper). They just drain the battery.
- Comment on Which is better OMV or TrueNAS? 9 months ago:
Things are easy or free. Rarely both. :) it’s well worth learning OMV. If you have any questions I’ll try to help!
- Comment on Which is better OMV or TrueNAS? 9 months ago:
I run OMV baremetal for last few years. I really like it. I did try TrueNAS and found it too convoluted.
Nextcloud is a totally different beast that would run on top of either.
OMV allows you to use ZFS as well if you want (I do) but also the flexibility to use other raid systems.
I just wish they’d left in portainer as default. No point reinventing the docker wheel…
