I prefer Fedora. Tried mint and hated it.

It will upgrade an existing install. I did it on my surface and all my files and settings were kept.

The irony wasn’t lost on me. Since I was trying to update my surface. I’ve also installed Linux on it. Which runs a lot faster on the older Surface Nook 1 harder.

There is a way to upgrade directly. I got this from Reddit
reddit.com/…/is_it_safe_to_install_windows_11_on_…
It works fine - you just won’t get the more advanced security features available in more recent laptops.
- Boot up into Windows 10
- ensure you have 30GB free space
- Download the .iso: www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11
- right-click the .iso and select “mount” to create a virtual DVDROM
- create a new folder on your main system drive and copy all the files from the virtual DVDROM
- start a command-prompt
- navigate to the folder where you copied all the files
- run the following:
.\sources\setupprep.exe /product server
This will not actually install the server version of windows but will bypass the CPU check so that you can install Win11 on an unsupported CPU. The actual version of Windows installed will depend on the version of Win10 you have: Pro, Home, or Enterprise, for example.

Tried every reset option. I set to RAID mode and I saw hard disk in bios but boot failed at bazzite load screen.

I had already upgraded when I saw this. But it’s only another year, if it was 2-3 years I’d actually take the hit and roll back. I’d actually pay for it! Although next year I might move totally over to Linux. Will see.

I’ll try it. But I don’t see the drive detected in the BIOS so thought it might be more than that.
Also bazzite should have secure boot.
I’ll let you know!

I can see the disk in windows. It just doesn’t show up in the bios. I’ve been recommended to do a fully CMOS reset by pulling out battery but don’t really have time. It disappeared after a BIOS update :)
As for RDP. I regularly RDP to my windows machine and it auto changes resolution. And then I can log in on the PC itself and it returns to the monitor resolution. So I keep the same session but view it from multiple places.
I can’t get the same on Linux. Either I get my current session which doesn’t resize (stuck at connected monitor resolution). Or it creates a new resizable session which I don’t want because I want to continue what I was doing.

I have bazzite Linux as dual boot. Few usecases stop me from moving fully over. Nvidia drivers and VR support. And Remote Desktop doesn’t work the way I want it to.
Also for some reason my ryzen system stopped seeing my linux sata drive in bios so can’t boot anymore.

Yep. I Kept 7 for as long as possible but had to upgrade so 10 was next. I wouldn’t move to 11 if support continued for 10.

You can run it on two servers at once. I have WireGuard running on my router (which can’t give full speed) and my server (which can run at full speed). Also running on another machine for fun.
- Comment on TIL there was a TV tuner attachment for the Game Gear! 1 month ago:
I had one. And a TV sender (totally illegal where I was) to broadcast my cable internally to the game gear. I even played my mega drive (genesis) on the small screen.
What a waste of money, but at least I have memories!

My Nextcloud has randomly started giving file synchronisation errors. Second time it’s happened.
Never had this with OneDrive. They really need to update the backend.

Yeah. I lay for YouTube Premium. And it has already gone up. If it goes up any further though I may have to cancel. The whole family uses it though so cancelling it will affect more than just me. They aren’t tech savvy enough to avoid ads.
Now if YouTube blocks sharing a family account across houses (in my country) then they will make the decision really simple.

It can probably make sense if you play a lot. You can try out a lot of different games without buyers remorse. I know steam has a good return policy but sometimes you just miss the return window.
Personally, I just wait a few years and buy everything in the steam sale for under 30% of original price.

What’s the benefit over 2k monitors in portrait?
- Comment on Big Surprise—Nobody Wants 8K TVs 3 months ago:
Also I think the improvements in HDR and brightness recently are more substantial than the update to 8K. At normal viewing TV distance you’d be hard pressed to see the individual pixels, even on a 1080p screen.
Even for PCs there isn’t much reason to go about 2k screens (1440p).

I never understand the renewal cancellation issue. The company will get the renewal once. If that happens to me I’ll cancel going forward and never work with them again. But if they let me cancel easily I may go back in future.
