Microslop implies that there’s very little AI slop.
Consider Slopsoft, Macroshaft, Micro$oft, etc. instead.ItsMeForRealNow@lemmy.world 1 month ago
No no its like microplastics its everywhere.

Microslop 365 Copilot App. Has a nice ring to it.

My kid destroyed my newish laptop and I could only pluck the memory off it to salvage something. So I am back to surfing and doing office projects on my old Alienware Aurora R4 from 2011 running Windows 7. No more gaming for me but also, no need for office products for now and the foreseeable future. Today it would cost me almost double to replace the laptop he destroyed with how much my memory and graphics card would cost. I am so happy that when my Office 360 is up in March I can tell them to fuck off. I am not now nor will ever be a fan of having to pay you over $100 a year so I can open a Word Doc or an old Excel spreadsheet. I am using the web-mail version of my email so I no longer need your Outlook, either.
And… since I have been hanging out on Lemmy I have seen way too many posts about Linux and gaming to ever think I will buy a windows product again. I miss not playing my Flight Sim and games like Madden but I will never upgrade this OS on this old beast.
Like others I am looking forward to the day when I can build my new computer and install Linux on it and enjoy gaming again.

What I’m about to tell you might shock you, as it doesn’t get brought up hardly at all, ever, but… linux.
optissima@lemmy.ml 1 month ago
Try Linux out on the old laptop, you’ll probably be pleasantly surprised how much gaming it can handle.
Zink@programming.dev 1 month ago
Your use case sounds perfect for using LibreOffice as a drop-in replacement. Opening a Word doc or an old Excel spreadsheet is effortless. You don’t sound like the “I use Excel every day for my job and there is no replacement” folks with very specific needs.
And I will echo what the other reply said: try Linux on your laptop! Not only will it probably work fine, it will probably also feel much faster and more responsive.
Trying most of the big Linux distros is super easy and zero commtment, too. When you boot from the install media, it loads directly into the OS desktop running natively on your hardware! Then once you’re ready to install it, there’s usually a shortcut on the desktop or something.
I recommend trying Linux Mint. It is so simple to install and full featured out of the box, plus being based on ubuntu and being very popular itself, information and help is everywhere.

Fuckin hell, all I wanted was to keep my Skydrive. That’s fuckin it. Nothing more.
sigh I’m gonna have to switch to some self hosted bullshit ain’t I? It’s gonna be back to ye old “let’s save today’s photos from my phone onto my machine” bullshit?jode@pawb.social 2 months ago
Nextcloud does that automatically 😉

Lol, am I the only one who still uses mini and micro USBs to transfer files onto my laptop? TIL I’m apparently out here livin’ like the Geico caveman hahaha
Kissaki@feddit.org 2 months ago
There are alternative providers.
tehmics@lemmy.world 1 month ago
I can’t comprehend why you would have done that at any point in time, really. Surely you can self host automated backups
brucethemoose@lemmy.world 1 month ago
To be fair, relying on OneDrive is like waiting for a bomb to go off.
“let’s save today’s photos from my phone onto my machine” bullshit?
Once it’s set up, I don’t see how that’s a hassle? Especially if its just syncing over WiFi.

Honestly the hardest part of “productivity” is keeping up with the product names. 😅 I just hope the rename doesn’t break links/docs and that licensing/features stay crystal clear for users.

I lost 50% of mine when we were.forced.to used Teams and we started getting notifications every 5 seconds.

Well at least they’re being honest about the future of Microsoft.
homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 2 months ago
Silly consumers. Microsoft will tell you what you want, when you want it, and through sheer force of an 800 pound marketplace gorilla, they’ll continue to shlurp in 20-30 Billion dollars in pure uncut profit every three months.
Geez it’s like you guys haven’t been getting screwed by this convicted monopoly for forty straight years with absolutely no end in sight.
manxu@piefed.social 2 months ago
It all kind of makes sense if you look at it from an investors’ perspective, which is the only one that really matters to CEOs. You can do whatever you want, but unless a company is an AI company, you can’t reach a stratospheric PE ratio and your stock stays “low.” You convince investors that you are an AI-first company, and your stock can break free of its shackles and reach its full potential!
All for the relatively cheap price of slapping two letters on everything, AI.
Bishma@discuss.tchncs.de 2 months ago
So far on my work computer I’ve had a policy to indiscriminately uninstall anything that says copilot. If I hadn’t seen this post I may have nuked it, then spent the afternoon trying to figure out where excel went.
mohab@piefed.social 2 months ago
What does this even mean 😂 Capitalism breakdancing over the dead body of language at this point.

I haven’t used any of that for decades. None of it is necessary ever.

I feel there’s some marketing conspiracy with the “office” term. It looks like they have been planning to make it disappear because it is uncool for some new marketing genius or it reduces the target markets, I guess. So they first attached a new term, 365, as a transition, and now they dropped the office while keeping the 365 so recent users can still make the link. The AI bubble was maybe just a convenient excuse to advance the plan.
KnitWit@lemmy.world 2 months ago
If true, then it is beyond dumb. When I need to do office related work, ie typing a document or using spreadsheets, the most relevant term would be office. Not a term that is a reference to flying a plane.
Of course I don’t use microsoft for anything, but it is wild to watch that company completely forget what it is that they do.
FartsWithAnAccent@fedia.io 2 months ago
Haha, gross.
atmorous@lemmy.world 1 month ago
It jus clicked for me why they call it copilot. Hated it since it was announced and even more now. Everybody should be flying solo
ebolapie@lemmy.world 1 month ago
Oh hey, this reminds me, I really need to cancel that before it renews

Didn’t this happen like., a few years ago?

Too funny. My last boss hated how much I bitched and complained about Microslop. Now I’m certain he’s bitching. Glad I dumped M$, what a shit company with shit products.

Yeah that happened about six months ago, rolls off the tongue doesn’t it
Carnelian@lemmy.world 2 months ago
Trying to figure what exactly is going on, cuz there are older posts about it, but only the web version? Is it just that the local app has been updated?
madjo@feddit.nl 1 month ago
Surely they wanted to name it Microsoft 365 Copilot Slop, but the CEO was against that.
nroth@lemmy.world 2 months ago
Wow, it’s not a joke

It’s so hilarious to see people’s reaction to something that happened two years ago.

Looks like this change happened between Jan 19 and Jan 20 2025 - less than a year ago.
Stop panicking, people. It’s silly.
I don’t think anyone is panicking. If anything I reckon most people find it hilarious 😂 microslop are desperate to make some money with their LLMs and it’s funny that noone is interested.

I am so waiting for Ed Zitron’s next newsletter/podcast.

the word “app” in Microsoft 365 Copilot app isn’t capitalized. I’m not sure if it is actually technically correct, but i think mentioning that it’s an app is awkward anyway. (it only faintly gets across that it’s like, a program with slightly better access to files OS, and the computers resources than a web thing, but i thought everything is enthusiastically in the cloud?) also, according to me, not capitalizing the product name fails to (superficially) communicate being professional (“Microsoft Access 365 Professional™®”) by capitalizing it
captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works 2 months ago
They probably didn’t capitalize “app” so as to avoid confusion with Windows App. Which is what they’ve renamed Remote Desktop to.
You can’t reach these decisions on normal people cocaine. You need the special executive cocaine for this shit.
NewNewAugustEast@lemmy.zip 2 months ago
Cool. Still don’t need office so… Whatever.
