- Comment on FBI admits buying Americans' location data and says it won't stop 6 hours ago:
Anyone else remember a few years ago when the government was caught performing warrantless searches on America’s phone data and metadata, using direct wiretaps at the phone companies, and it was a huge deal and the whistleblower had to flea the country or face imprisonment? And we all said at that time that the government’s actions were shocking and they had to stop right away, and at first they said they would, but then they never really did?
Yeah, me neither.
RIP, the Constitution. We’ll miss you.

Hi @carlnewton@feddit.uk , I really love this idea and really appreciate you taking on this big task.
I can see it replacing the stand-alone web site I run now for a local group, but I have a couple of questions before I go install the app and try it out.
- Do you have a list of existing instances somewhere? I looked around in your github and blog site, and could not find that.
- How do you keep the content that gets posted to stick to the local topic? I.e., if I set up a site for my city, what’s to stop someone from spamming posts about the big city nearby? Or a big city plumber from advertising their services?
- How do admins deal with spam / negative content getting posted? Once a site takes off, this is a real problem, I hope you’re thinking about how to solve.
Again, thanks.

Yah, I just read the History section of the OO wikipedia page, and it mentions that from the start. I’m not someone with a knee jerk reaction to “Russian” but it’s worth considering. Thanks.

I’ll believe that when my sisters start saying this. Till then, it’s just us privacy fans screaming in a dark cave, enjoying the echo.

Yes but the RSS feed for non-subscribers is just the announcement of the post. I still have to go to the site to read the whole newsletter, which is fine.

I see the Linkedin logo but don’t know of any such replacement for the ‘social media for employment’ service they offer. If there is now such a service, I would switch in a heartbeat.

- Comment on Building a Quake PC 1 month ago:
After I finished restoring the IBM 2168 486 DX2-66MHz (my childhood dream DOOM PC), there was another box that I wanted to check. Released in June 1996, Quake received many updates to ride the triple technological shock-wave of the late 90s. Originally a DOS, software rendered, LAN oriented game, Quake transitioned to Windows with winquake, gained 3D hardware acceleration with vquake/glquake, and got a dedicated deathmatch fork with QuakeWorld (qwcl/qwsv).
This is an era that I completely missed when I was a teenager because I did not have the money to upgrade my PC. On top of that, France only really got access to the Internet many years later, in 1999, when AOL came with its 99 Frcs/monthly unlimited plan. Here is the story of my “Quake PC”, built thirty years later.
