The gloomy sentiment around Reddit Inc. has failed to dissipate after its shares fell 50% from a February high, with volatile technology stocks under pressure.
I feel like I have simpler reasons for leaving Reddit.
The third party apps quit working and the site and app run like shit and take forever to load.
Simple problems, simple solutions.
The Reddit app and site are bloated bullshit. It’s an insult that they want you to use that. Lemmy with Voyager is the experience I like.
Yeah, I came here when they did the API thing. I was spending too much time on reddit anyway, now I’m reading and gaming more in my free time.
That was indeed awful, but I put up with it (and the app even improved a bit over the last year or whatever). The thing that made me finally leave was posts being shadow deleted for simply saying a man’s name and then being threatened with bans for upvoting the “wrong” content. Absolutely not.
I left because once you see that most posts are just commercials and advertising and then you realize how they sell our attention span instead of paying us for it then I left. I don’t work all day just to come home and make someone else money.
Not to mention how many posts are made to get you to react viscerally, instead of engage with the community - things like AITA seem especially prone to this.
That’s actually the main reason most left, Lemmy has never seen a bigger increase in MAU before or after the death of 3rd party apps.
Not to say the other stuff isn’t important, but for me Reddit WAS Apollo. Without it, it didn’t even feel like the same service. Enough people felt the same about their preferred apps that they left en masse in 2023.
For me Reddit was Alien Blue. It all went downhill after Reddit bought it and then stopped updating it.
There was never an app that had such a great UI for iPad. Apollo never introduced a two column Split View like it.
Narwhal had one, but was a bit meh otherwise.
Yup, for me it’s Sync. And Sync is doing a decent enough job of bringing me Lemmy content.

I was one of those. Happily discovered Voyager. I go back, usually when a search link takes me there.
The mobile app is designed by people who I only imagine get paid by the bulk number of raw clicks/taps on UI elements.
Wait until they figure out that reddit provides very little of value. The users are the ones who post content and keep the site alive.

Once a company becomes publicly traded it always gets worse. Once the shareholders are closer to the executive compensation packages than the customers/users it is all downhill. It is like clockwork.
The same thing will happen to Apple and Costco eventually.

They will paywall first or become like Facebook, require more and more about your personal identity, like face scans, IDs,etc

Reddit has very weak leadership in my opinion.
I wouldn’t be betting on them, especially when their user base is going to want them to stand up for them and the Elon fiasco shows Spez won’t.
It’s a tinderbox before the next large Reddit protest happens again and more niche communities splinter off to the fediverse.
I think I linked to it before here months ago but Reddit won’t let mods go dark without prior authorization. The mods basically gave up any means of meaningful protest outside of leaving.
Which if they haven’t done so now, they likely never will.
Powermods also control dozens of subs each.

Microsoft has an AI store and all the apps are absolute crap. AI is a good Chatbot, but applying it to other things that can be monetized is clearly difficult.

I bought a single share when the ipo happened figuring it would be funny. Meant to sell when it was at 200 and forgot. Just checked. Still funny, sucks I missed out on $100 but I figure it’s going to keep going down. I’ll keep my one share. Reminds me to look.
And this right here is why I laughed my ass off when they were doing their IPO and offered me an early buy-in. The company has never made a profit to my knowledge, why on earth would I imagine its value would go up?
There is no growth potential at all. They regularly bleed large numbers of users with their rando-bans, and the new user experience is so terrible that there is no reason any new person would ever want to use it.
Yup. What’s left of their user-base is cranky, well-entrenched against their bullshit, and not afraid to show it. See: the APIpocalypse, etc. I would bet they lost millions of users over that, and now they’re alienating tens or hundreds of thousands more. They have a pretty shit business model which largely relies on enshittification.
This time, they overdid it. Since Nov 5th there were at least 3 ban waves by Feb 13th. The same time I got banned, now we are in the 5th to 6th ban wave right now. This way more than normal

I appealed it and it was lifted, but not before it was upgraded to a permanent ban for ban-evasion on other accounts (I’ve never had more than one account in my 14 years of reddit.) The perma-ban was lifted on appeal too, but by that point I was just like fuuuuck off.
I heard they did that a bunch of other users too, temp ban, resulted in perma ban of other accounts as soon as the temp ban was lifted.

Reddit has a feature where there helpfully link your account to stranger’s accounts. When the stranger is banned from any sub, you are too. But you don’t know you are banned from those subs. So when you innocently post, you get perma-banned.
Same thing happened to me. I told a guy to fuck off and got banned for not being nice. I appealed, but before that process completed, they permanbanned my 14 year account. I like that on Lemmy I can say normally uncontroversial things like “Nazi scum fuck off”.
i’ve had various accounts over the years and never gotten hit for “ban evasion”. that being said that suspension was my last straw and i deleted my account.
They’re permabanning everyomangionene who says anything good about Luigi Mangione, who is literally the greatest hero of the year in America, if not the decade. What did they think was going to happen?

Reddit was one financial thing I never followed at all when it went public. Simply didn’t care. Don’t know what it even opened at originally.
