I dont really care that the average person still uses twitter… What’s INFURIATING is that gov’t agencies are still using that shit. Why are important pieces of information still being shared on twitter??

I can’t believe people still use Twitter.

The Secretary of Defense coordinated military operations on Signal, accidentally included a reporter to the group chat (who later spilled the tea on the whole thing), and in that chat claimed they were “clean” on their opsec.
That’s what republicans do. They’re dumber than a bag of wet bags.
acosmichippo@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
they would never do such a thing. not after calling out hillary clinton for using private email servers.
Bronzebeard@lemmy.zip 3 weeks ago
Bush used private email servers before her. The trump admin used private email servers after the scandal. I didn’t think ANYONE in the government should be, but Republicans have always accused others of what they were doing

Not just signal, a home brew spy version from a foreign government.
wetsoggybread@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
My friend works for a local town that has a presence on fb, twitter, and inatgarm. The main reason he says they haven’t moved to platforms like blsky is because as a government entity they are required to be able to archive all online communications for situations like a Right-to-know request but run into the issue that these small platforms aren’t supported by the archiving software so they can’t move away completely until then. Fun fact: 1st amendment prevents the government pages from removing or hiding comments you leave on their posta
howrar@lemmy.ca 3 weeks ago
Would that stop them from duplicating the information on other platforms?
wetsoggybread@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
It does if it can’t be archived, any official posts must be available for a right to know request so they could post on Facebook or twitter but other sites that don’t have a way to archive or a third party to archive they can’t make official posts
SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Don’t be surprised that fascists use the fascist megaphone.
ripcord@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
I keep getting arguments from peoplee about this, even on Bluesky.
Apparently it’s too much to expect people to inconvenience themselves and not follow their favorite musicians or whatever.
If the vast majority of people can’t be assed to take the absolutely easiest step possible to fight (or avoid supporting) fascists/Nazis, then we really are fucked.
Same thing with how people could very, very easily choose just NOT to buy another Nazicar. Yet 90% if Americans still bought one last month as a year earlier. It’s just about the smallest sacrifice I can think of - just buying a DIFFERENT car that you might not like quite as much.
And I think the fact that we are where we are right now also confirms the problem.
DJDarren@sopuli.xyz 3 weeks ago
Perhaps it’s because I’m old, but I kinda hit a wall a few years back where I stopped giving a shit about what famous people had to say on the internet. So on that basis, the move from Twitter to Mastodon was easy for me. Less easy was leaving behind people who I liked, but life is change, and we leave people behind all the time.
AoxoMoxoA@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
I ditched most of my friends when twitter and facebook came out. They all got too twitchy and really boring to be around. They were becoming more and more self conscious and self absorbed. It’s some scary shit watching from a far
jaybone@lemmy.zip 3 weeks ago
Are you saying 90% of Americans bought a Tesla last month?
Machinist@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Nah, they’re saying sales have only dropped by 10% from 2024, in the US. Which is fucked up.
Wonder if that’s because left aligned types had already quit buying them in '24? He was already being a total fuckhead during the election at that point.
Hell of a way to squeeze a statistic.
jaybone@lemmy.zip 3 weeks ago
Yeah reading it again, they are saying year over year, last month (June) sales were down 10%.
They phrased it very oddly. Like the kind of way you phrase things when you are trying to spin an agenda.
None of that helps. The facts speak for themselves. We don’t need to embellish to make the point. That only invites challenge to our credibility.
ripcord@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
No
SupraMario@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Yea I really don’t understand this, like move it’s 2 seconds to join bluesky…like damn
tamman2000@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Time or technical challenge are not the issue. The issue is that the utility of a social network is a function of the number of individuals in that network.
That’s why Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Reddit all still have dominant positions in their regimes. If you want to see what your friends are saying you need to be on the same network they are on. And if they are on Twitter, signing up for Bluesky doesn’t magically get you their content. I’m off twitter, never really used insta, I have my FB account, but I only log in now when I need to check on specific things (like seeing if people were OK after the wildfires swept through the town I used to live in), and I guiltily admit I still use reddit, largely because a lot of the niche subs I frequent aren’t here. I know the solution to that last problem is for someone like me to step up and make them, but… I’m tired boss. I can either be a volunteer firefighter, or I can admin a firefighter com on Lemmy. I can’t do both.
SupraMario@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Naa I get it, I think I’m more annoyed at how the big guys (bands/nfl teams/companies/ect.) haven’t moved. Because if they do, they’re going to drag a ton of people with them and it’ll kickoff the migration.
Lanusensei87@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
People just don’t want to quit because the alternatives aren’t populated enough… Which is caused by people not leaving. Twitter is to many a necessity for their business, just like many softwares provided by scum companies.
acosmichippo@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
bluesky is populated “enough”.
CidVicious@sh.itjust.works 3 weeks ago
I do think that bluesky has a ton of momentum right now and is a viable alternative. But the thing about microblogging sites is that if the specific people you want to follow aren’t on them, there’s not really a substitute. I know I’ve heard people say that, for example, a lot of japanese game developers are still primarily on twitter (I’ve never been a twitter/bsky enjoyer so I can speak to it personally).
Lanusensei87@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Not if you want to make a living of it. People that do commissions tell me this. It’s just what it is.
Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 3 weeks ago

- You’re a marketer or influencer and you know MAGA nuts also buy shit

There’s still some information on certain topics, where it is the best place to find it. OSINT for example.
People who use Twitter to publish and have a large audience are reluctant to leave their followers behind. Convincing followers to go over to a new platform is not so easy. If you fear losing 70% of your followers, if you switch to Blusky, or 95% if you switch to Mastodon, then it might be risky financially.
Network effects are strong.
Lizardking13@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
For me, it’s the best place for quick sports updates. Many writers have moved to bluesky, but many more have not. Sports Twitter is the sole reason I use it.
the_q@lemmy.zip 3 weeks ago
This right here summarizes the problem.
“Yeah it’s full of Nazis and has had a big hand in the downfall of modern America, but my convenience!”

What’s awful is- I can find this news in other places using RSS. Not nearly as quick but… Who cares? Like wtf difference does it make?

Actually more relevant now, considering the ending
“Go to the site where Nazi’s scream at you”. It’s talking about moving from facebook to twitter.

Well the punchline to that sketch is “instead of FB, just do what I do: Go to the site where nazis scream at you!” just might be that twitter reference you said was missing.

Non-fediverse social media is designed to be addictive because that’s how the people running it make money.
lazyViking@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
What do you mean non-fediverse? How does Federation affect addictiveness?
dejected_warp_core@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
That’s easy. It’s more dull here, and there’s less lock-in.
No, really. Social media without the dopamine-pump-style algorithm behind it is far less stimulating. Meanwhile, the Federation model itself allows us to abandon nodes that are co-opted by bad actors. So there’s always somewhere else to go with all your favorite stuff when things go sour.
migo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 weeks ago
Algorithmically curated timelines are designed to be addictive. Fediverse doesn’t have that, it’s time based, like it used to be before.
jaybone@lemmy.zip 3 weeks ago
I am also addicted to the fediverse.
mhague@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
You can mimic the feel of Twitter by taking reddit threads and cutting them at the most popular reply (Reddit already does this), and then reversing the order. Now the “best” content is front and center and the conversation / context is in the background. Users don’t have to go through the tediousness of a discussion before experiencing the sheer joy of a witty response. The emotions come faster and more consistently.
Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
People use it for the same reason they use Truth Social.

half of the users are probably porn OF accounts, i wonder if any of them actually divested from x. we know meta doesnt allow porn of any kind.
Bronzebeard@lemmy.zip 3 weeks ago
There’s just a lot less activity on the alternatives. Especially if you’re trying to follow niche interests.
Obviously, I left, but I get how barren it can feel when the latest post about a hobby of yours is 3 days old, instead of 3 minutes.
