Like any phone, even a landline? I should have referred more to smartphones i guess. But still, the only reason we “need” them is corporate greed driven. No one needs more than a landlines or a jitterbug at most.

*required by capitalism for “modern” life. Literally no one actually needs a phone. But samsung and apple do need to keep their slave labor producing products for consumers.

I do use duplicati for my desktop and its great.
This is more and issue of having matching, linux, and 1 windows (soon to be linux) pc. So mixing and matching is hard. I have 1 nas for movies and music and my other nas is for music production backup. That one auto backs up from my Mac.
So then, every few months I copy that nas onto another drive and put it in the safe. I guess I want a better way to do that other than plugging the drive into the nas and manually copying everytbing over.

Meanwhile I made a post asking if plex is bad now and most people on it said “no it’s great I paid for my lifetime pass years ago and its been the best!” Yeah, we know the truth now.
Jellyfin all the way.
- Comment on There is no good reason why there is still homelessness and poverty 1 week ago:
For those reasons I believe ai will be a net negative for all humanity in a capitalist system. It serves to further enrich billionaires and create a police state for the rest of us.
Now if it wasn’t this way, you could use ai as a tool to potentially do good (im still not a fan of it) but we know this will never happen. So id advise anyone to boycott any ai shit that keeps getting shoved into our faces. I will deny it until I have to go live in a shack in the woods to do so.

I can tell you right now why nothing happens. Because those of us who have housing and a solid life are terrified it will be taken away if others are given what they worked for (I realize this to be false, however it’s a very common sentiment among 30-40 year olds who own homes or property of any kind).
So, they keep voting for farther and farther right politicians because the left wants to “take your guns, land, and make you live under communism!” This is a non-exaggerated thought process of how a lot of people think.

You’re a good parent. Id never give a kid a smartphone or internet access so early.

Ipad babies in restaurants blasting some insanely annoying brain rot peppered with ads? Its so common. Very dystopian.

I think you much overestimate the intelligence of the average human.
I was just saying that if you show a computer program run something (let’s say a choose your own adventure text game or something) to an average 12 year old today, its likely they would say, thats ai! Because they probably wont even know that a human could write code themselves to do something like draw a circle on screen.
Also, I would have loved to learn actual assembly and talk directly to the hardware. But like you said there is no use at all for it nowadays so thats going to be a lost skill.
- Comment on Been seeing a lot of posts about replacing Spotify and such, so I wrote up a guide on how I did just that 1 week ago:
I mean for work listening passively I’ve moved to icecast on vlc. There’s a shit ton of internet radio out there and I’ve discovered stuff I never would have otherwise. There’s also the archive. And bandcamp. There’s soooo many ways besides Spotify. Pandora also still exists and I used to like it but I think there’s a lot of ads now

Hell yeah. We should be boycotting them for taking our physical media, because it breeds complacency and that’s how they steal from us. You will own nothing and eat bugs.

because society pushes women to like these things under social pressure. it’s kind of gross. there’s nothing wrong with things women like, but this is manufactured. But hey, better than MAGA’s worshipping drump.

Of course it is. The shit people feed into it is quite stupid, as if they think its not being sucked up and used for their advertising algorithm instantaneously to enrich tech bros. Stop using it.
- Comment on Are those of us who grew up on older games more attuned to latency? 3 weeks ago:
You’re right. Yes, there’s slowdowns in a lot of older games but not necessarily input lag. The slowdowns dont bother me hardly at all. I think you hit right on it!
- Comment on Are those of us who grew up on older games more attuned to latency? 3 weeks ago:
Yeah it really does depend on the game, which is obvious, but still. Games that push the hardware are obviously gonna feel laggy
- Comment on Are those of us who grew up on older games more attuned to latency? 3 weeks ago:
C64, for one!
- Comment on Are those of us who grew up on older games more attuned to latency? 3 weeks ago:
Huh. To me that feels instant. You sure you had a working crt??
- Comment on Are those of us who grew up on older games more attuned to latency? 3 weeks ago:
Im not certain what input delay youre referring to. It is likely very dependent on the games I play as well. Of course some of the older games pushing the hardware to the max were laggy when a lot of sprtes etc were loading.
- Comment on Are those of us who grew up on older games more attuned to latency? 3 weeks ago:
Yes there’s definitely processing lag on some of those games where they were pushing it.
Then you have joust on the 7800 which is ridiculously smooth.
