They’re called glass brick or glass block, and you can still buy them, I just checked some local home improvement stores’ websites, and they all had some in stock

My 50s house still has a glass brick window facing the driveway. It’s a great silhouette backdrop, if I leave workbench light on.

Very pretty.

Why is this a shitpost? It’s !nostalgia@lemmy.world
TheMinions@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 weeks ago
Shitposts on Lemmy are basically just post whatever you want.
Sometimes it’s beans, sometimes it’s moth, sometimes it’s highly specific nostalgia. Also a lot of trans rights stuff (happy pride, btw).

I always wanted to smash one of these walls with a sledge hammer. I bet it would be satisfying as fuck.
subarctictundra@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Haha. I think I have seen these with a couple of windows smashed. Although something tells me they’d be quite hard to smash — like a CRT.
ThePantser@sh.itjust.works 3 weeks ago
Those are my basement windows. Previous owners fucked me over if I want to let some air in my basement though.

It’s not set up to be a giant Scrabble board. Disappointing.
subarctictundra@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
You could defo play scrabble on it with one of those liquid chalk pens
Sir_Gkar@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
When I looked at it I just had the uncontrollable urge to play Tetris.
Hikermick@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Huh I’ve never seen a wall of these and I’m old enough to remember the 70’s. Glass block was something you replaced your old basement with

It must be a regional thing as we’re probably about the same age. Growing up in CA, I frequently saw portions of walls made of these, especially in businesses and universities. One house by me had a cool turret staircase with alternating wall sections made of these glass bricks. There wasn’t much privacy at night, although you could only make out vague shapes.
subarctictundra@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Eastern Europe used them tons
Sorrow3527@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Hm I kinda always hated them.50-70s Austrian buildings used them a lot.

This was also my first thought when I saw this. His other effects are also really cool.
Treczoks@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Yes, but only with a way to get some air in and out.
In my daughters student dormitory, the large corridor linking all the apartments on a level has such a glass wall. 100% closed, no way to air this out.
Maalus@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
100% because it is a fire wall or regulations ask for it.
surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
100% because it is a fire wall
I don’t know what you’re talking about, it would be hell to run cat6 through that. I’d definitely route around it and put the firewall in an adjacent room.
The wall material is so hard you’d think it was meant to stop an actual fire.

I lived in a flat in London where the only window was filled with these glass bricks. I think I would have preferred a window.
buzz86us@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
I’m likely replacing one of my picture windows with these for thermal reasons.
Etterra@discuss.online 3 weeks ago
Can somebody help me? I’m trying to come up with a Tetris joke but I keep filling the screen with trash.
rob_t_firefly@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Ah, your having a creative block.
CurlyWurlies4All@slrpnk.net 2 weeks ago
Trying pivoting, you might see a solution.
HatchetHaro@pawb.social 2 weeks ago
if i might Plonk in, i have a solution 4-WIdening up your perspective. if your Garbage is a Cheese Race you might want to take it in Stride, but if it’s neat you might want to T-spin your mindset and build on top. take it slow, Back-to-Back, and you can Perfectly Clear out your board.

Also, teraco as floor material. It cleans easily and it stupidly resistant to damage.
Cort@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
Do you mean terrazzo?
Rooty@lemmy.world 2 weeks ago
Yes, same thing.
subarctictundra@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
And while we’re at it, these yellow-lit interiors with brown tiles were pretty too.

gofsckyourself@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
I’m pretty sure the yellow and brown was just from all the indoor chain smoking

Yeah, they were probably completely transparent colorless glass 😂😩

I like this look. It has this aura of beautiful golden light about it. It has that aura without going the full gaudy gilded look like you would find in something the president built.
NarrativeBear@lemmy.world 3 weeks ago
That golden light would look great on my water bed and lava lamp collection.
