Youtube is telling me daily that they’ll soon disable my youtube because I have an ad blocker. Still waiting for it to actually happen.

I’ve been using Ublock origin for years and I’ve never seen a message like that
Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 1 day ago
I don’t even login so I don’t know what they are going to disable.
nichtsowichtig@feddit.org 1 day ago
correct me if I’m wrong, but I think ublock origin updates quickly enough to remove these notifications before most users see them
vga@sopuli.xyz 1 day ago
Same here. I started seeing them this week.
cotlovan@lemm.ee 1 day ago
Same. The last time I saw an YouTube ad was around 2015.
JDPoZ@lemmy.world 1 day ago
Don’t use Chrome. Use Firefox with unlock, Sponsorblock, and a VPN like Mullvad. Use SmartTubeNext on a Shield Pro with FLauncher instead of Google’s.
Use 3rd party YouTube clients on your mobile device. Vanced on Android, and Unwatched on iOS.
mbirth@lemmy.ml 1 day ago
Same here. And I’m waiting for them to finally do it because it’ll free up so much of my time. I might start reading books again.
Also, it’s the last Google-service I’m using. So, banning me from it will allow me to finally delete my Google account.
Maxxie@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 day ago
Had a “youtube doesnt allow adblock” pop up yesterday, set up freetube. No login required, even has a subscription import tool. So far so great.

Had a “youtube doesnt allow adblock” pop up yesterday
I haven’t run into that on any of my devices yet… 🤞🤞
What were you using before?
Maxxie@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 day ago
Ublock with firefox. Wasn’t able to set up a filter for the popup, didn’t try very hard though.
leftzero@lemmynsfw.com 1 day ago
Had my first ones yesterday too.
I’ll use FreeTube if I have to, though I don’t quite like the UI, but cleaning the cache seems to have done the trick for now.
LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 1 day ago

Or use stube on android tv and recanced on phones. One of the reasons I can’t go to iOS.
hornedfiend@sopuli.xyz 1 day ago
I had to go iOS because of… reasons, but you can sideload modded youtube app, with sponsorblock. exactly as on android, but with many headaches like token expiry every week and other bullshit issues like google not allowing IPAs directly in github repos.
Lame, but it can be done.
tonytins@pawb.social 1 day ago
This is literately the equivalent of cable.
fakeplastic@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 day ago
No, it’s worse. With a cable DVR you can skip all commercials.
tonytins@pawb.social 1 day ago
DVR is the equivalent of having a yt-dlp frontend that includes SponsorBlock.
mbirth@lemmy.ml 1 day ago
Can you, though? Because I remember when DVB started in Europe, they’ve sent a signal during commercials that makes your device block the fast forward feature.
I don’t know whether that’s still a thing. But you needed a hacked firmware on your TV / set top box to allow to FFWD through commercials back then.
A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 1 day ago
Ironic that just yesterday I was getting blocked on youtube telling me that adblocking was illegal/against tos/whatever and that if i didnt want Ads I could subscribe to Youtube Premium… only now to announce ads on premium.
What a fucking shithole company.
cyberwolfie@lemmy.ml 1 day ago
WE WOULDNT BE BLOCKING ADS IF YOU REGULATED ADVERTISERS LIKE YOU ARE TRYING TO REGULATE VIEWERS.
I still would.
DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 1 day ago
When options like uBlock and FreeTube no longer block ads, I’ll stop watching YouTube. They’ll never get a cent out of me.
A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 1 day ago
if ublock origin stops working, you can erase your youtube cookies or wait a few hours for a ublock origin update to work around it.

I would actually pay for YT premium if it was reasonably priced and I think there are many like me. Why are they shooting themselves in the foot?
Jakeroxs@sh.itjust.works 1 day ago
If you use yt music and watch YouTube as your main entertainment, it’s well worth it imo.
With that said, I’ve been degoogling and this is probably the one I won’t be able to break.
PixiePoop@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 day ago
Same here. YT is the only Google owned service I still use. I personally don’t mind the cost, since I watch a lot and wish to support the people that make the content. I would love a proper alternative but I don’t see that happen any time soon.
madcaesar@lemmy.world 1 day ago
I’ll never pay for until until 1. It’s reasonably priced, 2. Downvotes are returned and 3 sponsor block is integrated into the app.
ClamDrinker@lemmy.world 1 day ago
Can I add 4. the integrated video downloader actually downloads videos, in whatever format you would want, and with no internet connection required to watch them. This to me is still the biggest scam ‘feature’ of Youtube Premium. You can ‘’‘download’‘’ videos, but not as eg. an mp4, but as an encrypted file only playable inside the Youtube app, and only if you connected to the internet in the last couple of days can you play it.
That’s not downloading, that’s just jacking my disk space to avoid buffering the video from Youtube’s servers. That’s not a feature, that’s me paying for Youtube’s benefit.
I cancelled and haven’t paid for Premium in years because of it. When someone scams me out of features I paid for, I don’t reward that shit until they either stop lying in their feature list, or actually start delivering.
Auli@lemmy.ca 1 day ago
Sponsor block is not going to be included as those are not controlled by YouTube. They are the Chanel’s sponsorship.
TootTootComingThru@lemmy.world 1 day ago
I actually paid for it for a bit after I got a few months free with a Pixel a while ago. And it was pretty good and reasonably priced.
Then they started removing features (no dislike bar for you lol) and raising the price and I’m never giving them a single goddamn cent or not using a block on their shit.
I’ve since cancelled and transitioned from workspace or whatever they call it now and use Revanced, ublock origin, etc. They actually had my money and they fucked it. Never again. Get fucked, Google and the shit huffing execs in charge of it.
It’s never enough for these people. They want all of your money and they won’t stop until they have it. Fucking blood suckers.
redwattlebird@lemmings.world 1 day ago
Because of the desire for infinite growth. The line must go up 💹
mkhopper@lemmy.world 17 hours ago
Why? Greed.
And they’re not even shy about it.I made this comment some time ago on another thread about YouTube ads.
With the sheer number of concurrent users, worldwide, 24/7, YouTube could show one ad every three or four videos, and still make a mind boggling amount of money.
But if some money is good, more must be better, right?sugar_in_your_tea@sh.itjust.works 19 hours ago
Same. They should have a lower tier where your first N hours of watch time have no ads. I don’t watch a ton, so that would probably convince me to pay.
Maverick604@lemmy.ca 1 day ago
I tried watching a 30 minute video on YouTube the other day and it injected ads every 1 minute for the entire video. Fuck Google. Fuck YouTube. Fuck Alphabet.
Retro_unlimited@lemmy.world 1 day ago
I used to watch YouTube with ads since they added ads. It wasn’t too bad.
Then during the start of Covid tons of people watched YouTube and googles greedy eyes lit up… they went from 1-3 (skipable) ads per video to ads every minute of video. I was like WHAT THE F&$@… then installed unlock.
I couldn’t believe their greed.
I also spent Covid downloading (yt-dlp) every video I wanted to archive for offline, I’m worried for a time we loose YouTube. 99% of the things I loved about the internet is dead now, someday it will happen to YouTube too.
AnarchistArtificer@lemmy.world 1 day ago
An interesting component here is that it’s possible that the video creator is responsible for this silly level of ads, but it’s impossible to know. Creators can select points in the video where ads will happen, which they can use to preserve the video’s flow as much as possible. In theory, you can even select to not monetise your video at all, which is a useful tool if the topic is something particularly dense or sensitive. In practice, I’ve seen plenty of creators apologizing when an inappropriate ad plays at a sensitive part of the video, despite them having tried to disable ads on the video. It must suck to have so little power over one’s own work.
In your case, I suspect this was a creator choosing to maximally monetise their video, given the regularity and number of ads. However, it’s possible that this is a 100% “Fuck Google” situation, given how opaque they are. I find it frustrating that when we have poor experiences like yours, we don’t even have a clear target to get angry at. It leads to accountability so diffuse that it’s like homeopathy. Getting angry doesn’t necessarily help change things (at least individually), but it can be incredibly cathartic even then

No time like the present to begin creating a European alternative, given the geopolitics of the times.

Premium Lite? What paid benefits are there to YouTube other than removing ads?
WereCat@lemmy.world 1 day ago
YouTube music. But since Lite has ads then idk what it’s different. I’m assuming Lite also doesn’t have music.
propitiouspanda@lemmy.cafe 1 day ago
Youtube already has music.
Just pick your song and listen to it…
a_wild_mimic_appears@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 day ago
Premium Lite does not include access to YouTube Music - or else the ads on music videos wouldn’t be seen. (That’s the only thing i can understand on this bastardized version of a premium service)
frog_brawler@lemmy.world 1 day ago
YouTube already had too many ads, and I stopped using as a result. That was several months ago. I guess I’ll just have to stop using it even harder.
Kusimulkku@lemm.ee 1 day ago
It feels insane to me that you’re paying and you still get ads. I fucking refuse to do that
antithetical@lemmy.deedium.nl 1 day ago
It’s a sad state of affairs. I would pay for youtube in a heartbeat if it wasn’t connected to the biggest spyware company in the world. But now, even while paying you still get ads and they still track you. The people working at Alphabet are bad and should feel bad.
lemmydividebyzero@reddthat.com 1 day ago
I’m self-hosting Invidious… I get a nice YouTube experience without ever visiting YouTube.
alekwithak@lemmy.world 1 day ago
Wasn’t aware of this, that’s awesome. Unfortunately it would need to be able to cast to various HTPCs and be easy enough for my family to use to fully replace YouTube in my house.

Treczoks@lemmy.world 1 day ago
YT is only usable with ad blockers nowadays. And then it does not make a difference if you have a subscription or not.
I would subscribe YT if they had a reasonably priced ad free tier, but if it does not make a difference, I’ll watch it for free.
CosmoNova@lemmy.world 1 day ago
That way of thinking is a trap. They did have a more reasonably priced ad free tier but people using it only made it worse over time because the line has to go up.

I’ve long said to myself, the day revanced, smarttube and adblockers stop working is the day I stop browsing YT.
I watched my son showered me something the other day, he can’t yet login via revanced so still has ads, what a shit show.
I asked him how he copes with all the ads, he said I’m dumb to them now I just ignore it. But still coming from zero ads to that was a very jarring experience.
sykaster@feddit.nl 1 day ago
How does revanced work? How does it protect me from ads?
lsibilla@lemm.ee 1 day ago
I don’t use revanced, but freetube. I guess it’s similar.
It lets you play video without ads for free. It has a ui close enough to YouTube, which is nice.
Also you watch video anonymously. So it won’t propose video based on what you have watched before. Which is nice or not… you decide.
hellequin67@lemmy.zip 1 day ago
It’s an android only apk which you sideload and strips all adds from YouTube content.
saimen@feddit.org 12 hours ago
I hope more and more people learn that spotify can also be used to host videos.
TRock@feddit.dk 12 hours ago
Wut
alphabethunter@lemmy.world 12 hours ago
They have clips from songs, so yes, I guess. I’m not sure if anyone can host a video there though.
ObviouslyNotBanana@lemmy.world 1 day ago
I feel like youtube is losing sight of why users are paying for the service then.
To me, personally, youtube is useful enough that I will keep paying to remove ads entirely (in combination with ublock). That being said, there will come a time when the value proposition is no longer balanced. Then I will stop paying, and probably stop using it as well.
But as always with Google, I question whether their motive is to kill another service. They’re very competent at that specific thing.
Jimmycakes@lemmy.world 1 day ago
They just want users who are paying full freight as they know the ad business is in step decline.
pennomi@lemmy.world 1 day ago
Is it in decline? I mean, I want to believe it, but I haven’t seen any hard data on that.
seathru@lemmy.sdf.org 1 day ago
No; I don’t think there will be.
Surenho@lemmy.wtf 1 day ago
I’d love to see a transition to other platforms like Nebula. As users it would be nice to start choosing by principles too.
waddle_dee@lemmy.world 20 hours ago
Well, I’m still happy that my grandfathered $7.99 plan from the GPM days still holds up, fully ad-free.
unphazed@lemmy.world 19 hours ago
Watch your card on file. I had the whole enchalada once and loved using the music app and no ads. Card expired for one payment, sub cancelled, and I fixed it immediately. They wouldn’t give it back to me, and refused to refund the larger payment for just Youtube.
Yerbouti@sh.itjust.works 1 day ago
How about we collectively say fuck youtube and move content to Odysee or something else?
I’m fine with uBlock, but wouldn’t it be better if we just kill alphabet progressively? I’m already out Gsuite (nextcloud), gmail (own server), search (duckduckgo), chrome (firefox), I dont even link my phone to a gmail account. i just need to get ride of yt.
atlien51@lemm.ee 1 day ago
Wait so you pay for premium and still get ads?
slaneesh_is_right@lemmy.org 1 day ago
Premium light i guess. So you pay to get some ads? I don’t know
Joeyowlhouse@lemmy.wtf 23 hours ago
YouTube has so many ads now it’s ridiculous. Yesterday YouTube threatened me with the popup even though I have UBlock on Firefox. I’ve seen 10 ads on a 20 minute video. As if the un-skipabble 2 minute long ads that pause when you switch tabs wasn’t bad enough, YouTube is now putting ads in their Premium.
YouTube is in dire need of a competitor and fast.
Penny7@lemmy.world 1 hour ago
Chivera@lemmy.world 1 day ago
Revanced, newpipe, grayjay, it’s all I need thank you.
nucleative@lemmy.world 1 day ago
I think I’m understanding the playbook here.
Eventually YouTube will cost 89.99 a month and also be full of ads.
Then they will be disrupted by some startup company that will have to fight uphill for search and bandwidth access through Google’s monopolistic front door.
Years later a court case will be decided and the new guy will be up and running a free service with a few ads or 1.99 a month for no ads!
And then we get to go through it all again.
BrightCandle@lemmy.world 1 day ago
There is no end to the greed of those with millions and especially billions and they aren’t content to just keep running a profitable business, they have to get all the money.
This is just the history of humanity and finances forever, the one saving grace in all this is every big business gets complacent in its money making and seeks ever increasing profit (and becomes management heavy) until a young upstart finds a way to do it a lot better and cheaper and disrupts the market. Google has become the big lumbering unable to change organisation seeking maximum profit now, its become IBM.
