Problem solved! I don’t need to think about this premium stuff any more. Recently, I’ve been playing with the idea of paying for premium, but that’s no longer the case. Specifically, the family pack is the one that kinda made some limited sense in the past. I can see the kind of game Google is playing, and I’m not planning to participate.
Opinionhaver@feddit.uk 11 months ago
I’ve had no issues with adblocker for over half a year. Works flawlessly on both browser and mobile browser.
venusaur@lemmy.world 11 months ago
Y’all pay for YouTube?
Mihies@programming.dev 11 months ago
I would of there was a family tier that plays YouTube without ads in my country. The content I watch is good and authors deserve payment IMO. Sadly there is currently no competition, there are some marginal subscription services and there is peertube which doesn’t have monetization.
venusaur@lemmy.world 11 months ago
The ad revenue YouTube gets should be paying the content creators, no?
beejjorgensen@lemmy.sdf.org 11 months ago
I used to pay Google for things back when they were pretty awesome. Haven’t paid them a dime for years now.
Chivera@lemmy.world 11 months ago
Revanced, newpipe, grayjay, it’s all I need thank you.
ObviouslyNotBanana@lemmy.world 11 months ago
I feel like youtube is losing sight of why users are paying for the service then.
To me, personally, youtube is useful enough that I will keep paying to remove ads entirely (in combination with ublock). That being said, there will come a time when the value proposition is no longer balanced. Then I will stop paying, and probably stop using it as well.
But as always with Google, I question whether their motive is to kill another service. They’re very competent at that specific thing.
Jimmycakes@lemmy.world 11 months ago
They just want users who are paying full freight as they know the ad business is in step decline.
pennomi@lemmy.world 11 months ago
Is it in decline? I mean, I want to believe it, but I haven’t seen any hard data on that.
BertramDitore@lemmy.zip 11 months ago
Or, and hear me out: just install a browser plugin and forget ads exist.
These companies don’t respect us, so I don’t feel the need to respect them by allowing them to force their meaningless bullshit down my throat.
I don’t use it that much, but you better believe if I go to YouTube to watch a video, that video is the only thing I’m watching.
Sekoia@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 months ago
They’re trying to block adblockers again, it seems. I got the “adblockers are not allowed” popup again recently.
HyperfocusSurfer@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 months ago
Oh no… Anyways,
* Adds a filter for the pop-up*
accideath@feddit.org 11 months ago
There are people out there Who don’t watch YouTube on their PC. Can’t install a browser plugin on my TV.
breecher@sh.itjust.works 11 months ago
Well, you shouldn’t watch smart tv anyway. Shut off that slop and use your tv as a dumb tv through a computer. The other way is just asking to be exploited.
asudox@lemmy.asudox.dev 11 months ago
This ain’t reddit. You can freely name extension names here.
BertramDitore@lemmy.zip 11 months ago
Oh I know, I’ve been here for years despite the age of my account. I just migrated from lemm.ee
I tend not to like to name these types of extensions because more exposure puts them at risk, and they’re super easy to find anyway.
spankmonkey@lemmy.world 11 months ago
Firefox + ublock origin + sponsorblock and I haven’t seen an ad on youtube in all the years since I started that combo.
IsoKiero@sopuli.xyz 11 months ago
Yesterday evening I got a pop-up that I should disable ublock from youtube. Refreshing page got rid of that but apparently it’s time for me to run some updates on this thing. I’ve seen that few times, google changes something and as I’m a bit lazy to run updates my system sometimes gives the pop up.
Scrollone@feddit.it 11 months ago
Don’t forget about ReVanced and SmartTubeNext (for smart TVs)
TrueMonoxidist@lemmy.zip 11 months ago
Isn’t this because the music industry insisted on taking a cut of all YouTube shorts revenue? Like even if their songs aren’t getting played, they still rake in money from views.
Cris_Color@lemmy.world 11 months ago
Christ, premium light is still fucking 8 dollars a month and you don’t even get rid of ads. The greed is fucking astounding.
I’ll stick to an adblocker, dickheads.
sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 months ago
I truly, truly don’t get it.
Ublock Origin + Firefox still works.
Works just fine.
Been that way for over a decade.
Yes, if you’re more privacy concerned (and there are good reasons to be) you can use some other browser, something like NewPipe, or Invidious…
But I just don’t get why any normie, ever, goes for YT Premium…
Serinus@lemmy.world 11 months ago
Ublock Origin + Firefox
YouTube started detecting and complaining about that yesterday (for me).
Scrollone@feddit.it 11 months ago
Firefox+uBlock Origin on the computer.
ReVanced on my Android phone.
SmartTubeNext on my Android TV.
I haven’t seen a YouTube ad in years.
BurntWits@sh.itjust.works 11 months ago
In case anyone is reading this and using an iPhone, Orion is the only iOS browser afaik to currently support uBlock Origin. I haven’t had a single ad since discovering that. Picture in Picture mode works too, as long as you go full screen with the video before swiping home. Hope this helps someone.
TwanHE@lemmy.world 11 months ago
I’ve gotten some home page ads on revanced lately, but they’ll surely be patched out soon again
Cethin@lemmy.zip 11 months ago
As of yesterday YouTube is blocking videos for me. Until that’s solved, I’m just not watching YouTube. Not a big loss.
Usually_Lurker@lemmy.world 11 months ago
This is the way!!
I even subscribed to youtube premium when it came bundled with music streaming as well. back then it was a good deal. They kept raising prices and making the end product worse. Now it just seems obnoxious.
KingJalopy@lemm.ee 11 months ago
Newpipe is all I have. I signed up for a couple creators patreon to support those I really like. Fuck Google. They are here for the investors bottom line not our shit. But people just want their shit and it perpetuates this behavior. My friend said he pays to support the creators he likes. He supports the giant corporation holding these creators ransom. Just send them money directly. Use new pipe or whatever. Quit supporting this shit and let the whole thing die until we realize there has to be a better way.
Korkki@lemmy.ml 11 months ago
Why think of the consumer when you have practical monopoly on online video content distribution. If the creators are on youtube so will their audience and vice versa. Where will any of them go if you squeeze?
seathru@lemmy.sdf.org 11 months ago
No; I don’t think there will be.
propitiouspanda@lemmy.cafe 11 months ago
It will literally never end.
This is why anyone who was excusing advertising at all is part of the problem and should be seen as a useful idiot.
Stop lowering your standards so people richer than you can be even richer.
ElectricWaterfall@lemmy.zip 11 months ago
If they could they would only show you ads and charge you for the pleasure.
avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 11 months ago
There’s one in the article comments. Talks about getting the material “dishonestly” and violating the TOS.
tonytins@pawb.social 11 months ago
This is literately the equivalent of cable.
fakeplastic@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 months ago
[deleted]mbirth@lemmy.ml 11 months ago
Can you, though? Because I remember when DVB started in Europe, they’ve sent a signal during commercials that makes your device block the fast forward feature.
I don’t know whether that’s still a thing. But you needed a hacked firmware on your TV / set top box to allow to FFWD through commercials back then.
tonytins@pawb.social 11 months ago
DVR is the equivalent of having a yt-dlp frontend that includes SponsorBlock.

WTF is Premium Lite?
don@lemm.ee 11 months ago
Premium Sike.
Katzelle3@lemmy.world 11 months ago
It’s Premium, but not really.
undefined@lemmy.hogru.ch 11 months ago
I guess it’s their “pay for ads” tier which sounds fucking stupid to me.
credo@lemmy.world 11 months ago
Premium but without the music. And with ads apparently.
johnlukepeckard@lemmy.wtf 11 months ago
Before this change it was with ads for music content.
otacon239@lemmy.world 11 months ago
Premium Lite? What paid benefits are there to YouTube other than removing ads?
WereCat@lemmy.world 11 months ago
YouTube music. But since Lite has ads then idk what it’s different. I’m assuming Lite also doesn’t have music.
a_wild_mimic_appears@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 months ago
Premium Lite does not include access to YouTube Music - or else the ads on music videos wouldn’t be seen. (That’s the only thing i can understand on this bastardized version of a premium service)
propitiouspanda@lemmy.cafe 11 months ago
Youtube already has music.
Just pick your song and listen to it…
sexy_peach@feddit.org 11 months ago
Lul I have uBlock origin and no ads for free
13igTyme@lemmy.world 11 months ago
My ublock was having issues today and I had to scale back some of the stuff being blocked.
Vanilla_PuddinFudge@infosec.pub 11 months ago
time to open Freetube and paste the link
KnightontheSun@lemmy.world 11 months ago
They must be making extra effort lately. I got the “Ad blockers are prohibited” popup twice today on two systems. One Linux and one windows. Librewolf, UO and SB on both.
Was able to close popup and move on.
GargleBlaster@lemmy.world 11 months ago
Most of the time reloading the filters fixes uBlock not working
