I’ve been a Redditor for 13 years. I read the Admin explanation and the Mods reactions and immediately downloaded Lemmy. I’m still gonna lurk just to watch the chaos but fuck that noise with someone else’s dick thank you very much.

I just downloaded it after logging in and seeing that dystopian BS! I’m out lol
Reapz@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Same here, this is my first post!
I had a 13 year old account on Reddit, they can get fucked. The place is turning to crap, and now that boost has stopped working, I’m not using their shitty Reddit app.
YesButActuallyMaybe@lemmy.ca 1 year ago
I deleted my 12 year old account just this week because most subs I followed have been taken over by the image gen people (‘my friend fell in love with this <insert niche thing> and wants me to build it for her/him’) and I’m just pushing the market value of a shit product in my free time for no good reason. I don’t miss karma farming bots one bit
ghostrider2112@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Yeah, i deleted mine last year right after it turned 17 years old due to the API decision that broke 3rd party apps. I will browse on occasion, but it’s a mess for someone with ADHD these days.
As you mention, all memes and “am I the asshole with my story that attempts to paint me in a good light but you can still tell we are both stupid pieces of shit?”
Ikshiki@lemmy.world 1 year ago
My distaste for reddit is also increasing. Good I found lemmy. Still not sure how it works.
Master@lemm.ee 1 year ago
Just keep in mind lemmy is hosted independently per instance and there are psychotic admins and mods here too.
Ledericas@lemm.ee 1 year ago
I block conservative instances here, they always try to post clickbait threads
Ledericas@lemm.ee 1 year ago
i did the same thing, i was skulking around the modhelp sub, they are totally complicit with the admins current banning directives. the mods are okay if people are randomly getting banned or comment removed, regardless if they had a ban in the past that was lifted. they just assume all is ban evaders. they are quite lazy people too.
also filters not resetting after peoples ban is lifted, is on reddit. i do give credit some mods did go out of thier way to help out a user that got banned, but the mods approved thier comments, but reddit was still banning them. thier AI banning is too faulty.
JesterAUDHD@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Yeah, I just moved over. Its a shame but things are going to get crazy online.
Ledericas@lemm.ee 1 year ago
reddit started shilling for trump negatively or positively, thats when things got bad for most of the subs. you cant even say anything without your comment being misconstrued by someone.
DarkFuture@lemmy.world 1 year ago
“Shithole website continues circling toilet.”
SomethingBlack@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I first saw this news over on Reddit, immediately searched for an alternative. Got home from work and now here I am
DarkFuture@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Welcome.
Best advice I can give you is to just give Lemmy some time. It can feel a bit empty at first because there’s less content than Reddit but
-
I’ve been on here 4 months and have already seen a major increase in users.
-
Spend some time seeking out subs and joining. At first I wasn’t finding enough new content to keep me occupied during various downtimes during the day, but now I’ve got more than enough new stuff every day to keep me entertained.
SomethingBlack@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Thanks for the advice.
Yeah, I completely understand that it’s not gonna be as popular as Reddit immediately, but I know that if I felt the need to jump ship, other people will too.
I’m most just searching through All and sorting by new ATM trying to find some interesting things to read about and topics to discuss
Corngood@lemmy.ml 1 year ago
now I’ve got more than enough new stuff every day to keep me entertained.
You mean horrified/nauseous right? Maybe I’m doing it wrong.
straightjorkin@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I’m also kind of new, and if you’re doling out advice, I’ve got a quesiton: If I were interested in potentially modding someday, what kind of things should I learn/read up on to handle that kind of responsibility? I want to help build communities so I can selfishly enjoy them, but im feeling too new so far.

Fuck Trump and Musk. US should get invaded Iraq 2003 style.
Ledericas@lemm.ee 1 year ago
it was a bad sign when musk got a subreddit banned because it hurt his feelings, and then other subs got banned for someone reason to, they said it was a mistake, cant be a mistake when it suddenly happened after musk complained, and it was subreddits related to things contrary to conservatives: narccissit help, lgbtq+ subs.
OneBigSpud@lemm.ee 1 year ago
Finally made the permanent switch over to Lemmy. I left a link in the Reddit Safety post so anyone else could convert easily.
It’s an absurd overreach to say the least; good riddance to the corpo-bot platform.
Ledericas@lemm.ee 1 year ago
their recent banning indiscriminately is a huge overreach. both discord and reddit is trying to get bought off right now, they want thier IPO to be public. i dont see how reddit can encourage multiple accts if they see it as potential ban evasion accts.
mechoman444@lemmy.world 1 year ago
If the content is banned how is it being upvoted?
ShadowWalker@lemmy.world 1 year ago
If it gets posted, then you upvote, and it gets banned later they’ll issue a mass warning to everyone that up voted out before the ban.
Ledericas@lemm.ee 1 year ago
that retroactive banning is so wierd and unique to reddit. a warning in reddit is just an excuse to ban you for another simple misstep.
phoenixz@lemmy.ca 1 year ago
Reddit really likes it’s exit waves
Mongolianhamster@lemm.ee 1 year ago
Feels like how reddit was when I first used it 12 years ago. Bye bye reddit.
VisionScout@lemmy.wtf 1 year ago
I register on reddit 17 years ago. Before the great migration from digg. I remember /r/programming being the first sub to reach 100k subscribers.
I got banned for saying in the /r/europe sub that russia banning youtube in russia was a good thing because then we in the west would get less russian propaganda. Got banned for a couple days. Never looked back.
/r/programming is dead already since around a decade. All the good discussions moved to hackernews and lobsters.
PieMePlenty@lemmy.world 1 year ago
never forget that spez admitted to silently edit user comments that criticized him
I guess thousands of redditors saying ‘fuck u/spez’ over and over got to him. I wonder it such comments would fly today.
Ledericas@lemm.ee 1 year ago
one of the things i noticed, banning is a taboo on many reddit sub, you cant discuss bans in any form. although i think they misconstrued your comment.
bluedye@lemm.ee 1 year ago
I’ll have to stop looking at Reddit for real now.
surph_ninja@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I was checking it periodically to see if I was missing out on anything, but the entire front page is meticulously curated propaganda & ads now. The manipulation is especially obvious because they rarely even update it now. You’ll see the same shit stuck on popular for days.
But I’m not complaining. It canceled out any FOMO I might’ve had.
I don’t expect this ban hammer will help in their next earnings call.
Ledericas@lemm.ee 1 year ago
80-90% is about trump in one way or another, its pure ragebaiting. not really different from what youtube and facebook is doing. youtube slightly more tolerable, but they brute-forced right wing shorts into your feed(yes and i dont log in). Something people dont forgot on reddit when they are complaining about youtube/or a channel many people dont log into an acct.
cmrn@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Warms my heart to see all the ‘new account’ badges in this thread.

it was a sign when subreddits were getting ban, critical of trump or musk.
luciferofastora@feddit.org 1 year ago
Technically, I’m not new, just recently moved instance, but maybe mine delights you anyway? Assuming it’s still there, idk how long it lasts.
madsjchic@lemm.ee 1 year ago
Haha aaaaand that’s how I got here
ShadowWalker@lemmy.world 1 year ago
I suspect this will drive a lot of people over here.
Ledericas@lemm.ee 1 year ago
doubtful, people are still to addicted to reddit mainly the news and politics subs. people would have to get permabanned sitewide for them to come here or at least make even having thier only acct left walking on eggshells… like myself
Slax@sh.itjust.works 1 year ago
I mean I think its a good web series. We format it similar to How I Met Your Mother.
Potential seasons Ellen Poa Quarantine Policy The Donald Ban API Changes WSB Mod Policy Changes
And that’s how I met Lemmy.
Gloomy@mander.xyz 1 year ago
Wait, did the banning of the Donald rigger an migration event?? From whom and why??
I joined during the API season. Never looked back.

Same — I never used Reddit but I found out about Lemmy from a Content Creator I enjoy. Seemed cool, a few privacy policies later and I’m here. The more I read about Reddit the more I’m glad I never used it.
ksigley@lemm.ee 1 year ago
I was super late to the party. Wasn’t really a heavy user until right around the API changes.
Psythik@lemm.ee 1 year ago
You picked a decent, reliable instance. Good choice.
Don’t forget to block Hexbear and LemmyGrad!
ksigley@lemm.ee 1 year ago
Oh dear. I don’t even know how to do that. I really appreciate the feedback.
Gimmeva few minutes to tinker around in the settings.
Blackmist@feddit.uk 1 year ago
Conform, citizen.
KingThrillgore@lemmy.ml 1 year ago
My link for this was deleted. Huh. I didn’t see this earier.
Anyways I think this is a dangerous chilling effect and reddit has a terrible track record for not using this as intended, so I can only expect Reddit Admins to use this beyond warning, I expect bans and this used in warrants/NSLs quickly.
Stop using reddit, stop going to reddit.
4shtonButcher@discuss.tchncs.de 1 year ago
At this point being banned might be a good thing to drive home the point that also my favorite of the old corporate internet platforms should be avoided. I’m doing quite okay on staying away from Meta and have long deleted my Twitter account. I can’t get myself do drop Reddit somehow. Seems like they’re only helping me get off my addiction
Someone8765210932@lemmy.world 1 year ago
So, stop upvoting those luigi memes. How sad
Stormy1701@lemmy.zip 1 year ago
Seriously though, who still uses Reddit? It’s nothing but a left wing echo chamber, just like BlueSky.
win95@lemmy.zip 1 year ago
I’m gonna buy a Luigi board to ask the guidance of Aaron Schwartz because I’m sure he is dying to get revenge
Naevermix@lemmy.world 1 year ago
Reminds me of back in 2013 when Reddit admins accidentally revealed that Eglin Air Force Base, a location often cited as the source of government social-media propaganda/astroturfing programs, was the most Reddit addicted city in the world.

Phoenicianpirate@lemm.ee 1 year ago
Fuck it, I’m going to delete the account that I used to get over a previous permaban. I’ll read, but not post. No point in just posting anyway.
AWittyUsername@lemmy.world 1 year ago
First the removesort by controversial, and then you can’t even see controversial posts. Soon there will be no conflicting opinions, just a hive mind echo chamber.
Resurectra@lemm.ee 1 year ago
🙋🏻♂️ +1 on having received a warning. I’m a simple man. I see Luigi, I upvote.
Day 1 on lemmy so am finding my way around still :)

Got banned for saying Nazis shouldn’t be alive. Welcome to lemmy, I’m personally approaching it with the philosophy of “communities need activity to thrive”
Ledericas@lemm.ee 1 year ago
but theres no filtering of people “mass downvoting you though, which results in a ban/reported”
