Sure looks like it.

No, but a popular internet theory has his name meaning “spotted one” and whether or not it’s actually entomologically true, is always a fun thought. To think a god of the underworld played fetch with spot, the goodness multi-headed boi
Tangent5280@lemmy.world 8 months ago
So a dalmation of some sort?
cheesymoonshadow@lemmings.world 8 months ago
Not trying to be an ass, but I’m pretty sure you meant etymologically. Entomology is the study of insects.
Exusia@lemmy.world 8 months ago
You’re right lol

No, but everyone knows who’s a good boy! Right? Yes, you are! *pet*, *pet*
BlueLineBae@midwest.social 8 months ago
You forgot a “pet”! He has 3 heads!
HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 8 months ago
No, that head was busy sniffing ass and gets no pets. Like always
Flughoernchen@feddit.de 8 months ago
The third head is not in mood for a pet just yet, it prefers snackos
Holzkohlen@feddit.de 8 months ago
A pug. It needs three heads to get enough oxygen into its lungs.

Every time I see a flat-faced dog, I feel bad for it. None of them can breathe properly. It’s disgusting that they keep getting bred. Let those breeds die out!

I thought of him more like a 3-pug-problem

I say Cerberus is actually a Shitzu. Those cute looking menace will bite you without warning.
x4740N@lemmy.world 8 months ago
What about defining features in the mythos that can be traced to certain breeds
Or what is the most common visual depiction or cerberus
FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 8 months ago
It’s not a real dog.
x4740N@lemmy.world 8 months ago
There’s still no harm in attempting to identify Cerberus’s breed
Kusimulkku@lemm.ee 8 months ago
Prove it!

I don’t think they had naming conventions back in the day.

Thank you, you made my brain go down a rabbithole.

:O Thanks so much for the link! I was only remembering Beowulf’s dog which (IIRC) was only ever referred to as a war-dog.

My dad got the “cave canem” dog mosaic as a coaster when he visited Pompeii. He also put a “cave canem” sign above the dog house, which made most of the people walking by think his name was Cave.
People don’t know much Latin even in college towns.

Seeing as the daschund was bred in the 1600s, I don’t think Greek mythology would have included it. It would be like saying the trojan war might have had muskets because the Iliad doesn’t say they didn’t have them.

I don’t understand how that is the most upvoted comment in the thread? Like, is that supposed to be facetious? What the fuck is wrong with Lemmy?
Schmuppes@lemmy.world 8 months ago
Of we’re gonna be smartasses in this comment section, the proper spelling is Dachshund. “Dachs” is German for badger, Hund is German for, well, dog.
