It’s not a reason to discount someone’s views, is why. Addicts are still people, worthy of respect and dignity. The real reason to discount RFK is that he’s wrong about most topics pertaining to health and he doesn’t respect the science or evidence that contradict his opinions. The problem is that most of the electorate is scientifically illiterate, the end result being an over privileged dunce like RFK deciding how your health care is organised. Can’t put an insurance premium on that. Good luck guys.
Why are americans taking health advice from a former heroin addict ?

Because we don’t have a choice of who is in that position. The Grand Old Fascist Party has completely removed any form of democracy in this country. So now we are just stuck watching it happen.
explodicle@sh.itjust.works 7 hours ago
We could, you know, stop voting for fascists.

Sorry, best I can do is a protest non-vote, that way they know I’m okay with whatever happens

This is very much a “You don’t know what you don’t know” kind of situation.
I once read a case about a physicians assistant who worked under a bariatric surgeon for 15 years. After completing thousands of bariatric surgeries under the surgeon, he started his own clinic and hired a “supervising surgeon” who was retired and never there. Meaning, even though he was not a doctor, he was acting as the only surgeon. He botched botched dozens of surgeries, he caused pain and suffering to dozens of other people. He had no idea what the surgeon was doing that he wasn’t, because he wasn’t trained to perform that role. Instead of recognizing he couldn’t do it, he just assumed he knew anything necessary.
People take that approach to a lot of things. Very common in the law for people to look something on chatgpt and get mad at their lawyer for not following completely non-sensical advice.

Doesn’t the US even allow nurses to inject potent neurotoxins, as long as there is a doctor on the books that could theoretically be called?
kandoh@reddthat.com 6 hours ago
Because he says ‘things weren’t like this when I was a kid’ and it resonated hard with dumb people who see stuff like autism and transgender problems to be eradicated

The new food pyramid is just as influenced by lobbyist as the previous one. Only this time it’s the life stock industry.
Plus anti-woke MAGA wants to distance itself from vegans as much as possible.
But also, lean, fresh meat isn’t that bad. It does have a lot of protein, with really balanced amino-acids. You don’t have to carefully combine grains and legumes, in order to not miss out on essential nutrients.
Meat also has a lot of bioavailable iron and vitamin B12. Both are important and usually insufficient in a vegan diet.
If you count fish as meat, it also has bioavailable Omega-3. Especially fatty ocean-fishes like salmon. If you don’t eat fish, you either have to eat microalgae-oil or severely reduce your omega-6 consumption (no chips for you. They are fried in sunflower oil).
In contrast to fresh meat, most processed meats are really bad:
- Cured meat has sodium nitrate. That’s a known carcinogen.
- Smoked meat has smoke particles. That’s another known carcinogen.
- Charred meat has charring. Another carcinogen.
And you also shouldn’t eat a lot of fat from land animals. It has a lot of saturated fats which, you guessed it, cause cancer.

I’m an American, and I’m certainly not taking any advice from him
BanMe@lemmy.world 10 hours ago
I’ve been addicted to uh, almost everything besides heroin and gambling. I still give better advice than deflated-scrotum-face. But I also know how science works and why it’s a good thing. I believe in germ theory. I don’t throw roadkill on the roof of my car and eat it tartare later.

An avid user of drugs sounds like someone who would be knowledgeable about them, so clearly a smart choice
Phineaz@feddit.org 12 hours ago
Fuck that guy, but: Former heroin addict sounds respectable.
palordrolap@fedia.io 11 hours ago
True. He's in government, and specifically that government, so he has access to all the money and drugs he wants, so if he's remaining clean, he's doing exceptionally well on that score.
This should not be taken as an endorsement of his abilities as a politician or his knowledge about science. Plenty of other evidence suggests he should be doing neither of those. Hell, I'm not even sure I'd follow his advice if I was a heroin addict trying to get off the stuff.

America is not a meritocracy. People are routinely appointed to positions they have no business being in.
Also, Kennedy represents a crowd that is fundamentally lost to a social media reinforced “vibes based” reality. These people can live a solid major of their day without encountering objective reality. Their worlds are built around bullshit machines incentivised to feed them an ever increasing amount of bullshit.
These people votes, drive cars, have children, and carry firearms. So you can see why this place is so fucked.

Are fats part of eating real foods?
Yes. Healthy fats are a natural part of real foods such as meat, seafood, dairy, nuts, olives, and avocados. These fats support brain health, hormone function, and nutrient absorption when consumed in their natural forms.
They are really pretending meat has healthy fat, lol?
If they had simply left out that single word, their advice on fats would have been pretty good.

(No offense to decent people with “textured” timbres)

He is telling people to eat more meat, which sounds absolutely insane to me.
Green planet, veganism, healthy … all woke lefty communist snowflake bullshit. Eat meat, must be more gooderer. Eat more meat must be most gooderest!
What qualifies him to give health advice ? Why are americans trusting him ?
For those that are listening to him. It’s because he’s pandering to what they want to hear. Not because what he’s saying is right.

RFK Jr. wanted to lead the USA’s health department against a believed massive conspiracy by big-Whatever. Trump gave RFK Jr. a slot so RFK Jr. didn’t split the far-right crazy vote in the 2024 election.
In 2024, RFK Jr. launched an independent bid for the presidency after floating challenging Joe Biden’s spot in the Democratic Party. RFK Jr. had no chance of winning the Democratic primary or an independent bid; but being a conspiracy theorist and all-around horrible person, it was possible that RFK Jr. may have split enough of that population from key states to cause Trump to lose. That conspiracy theory nonsense really doesn’t hold water in the Democratic voter base. The folks who would choose RFK Jr. over Harris or Trump, would otherwise choose Trump over Harris.
Recall that in 2016, Trump won many key states with <54% of the vote; and in 2020, Biden flipped those key states after Trump’s mismanagement of the Covid-19 pandemic and other controversies. Even losing 3% of the popular vote in a few states to RFK Jr. may have cost Trump the election in 2024, or so it was feared.
Lots of people here are giving explanations of why the citizens may support RFK Jr. and, while that is all true, the reality is most of Trump’s campaign staff are just loyalists (i.e. Pam Bondi), alt-right conspiracy theorists (i.e. Kash Patel), and folks who assisted in his election campaign (i.e. Elon Musk, Dr. Phil). Many of these are figures are people largely unknown of until they were appointed to be Trump’s staff. RFK Jr. leads the HHS because he was given that role by Trump. As to why the USA folk chose Trump; Well, we’ve been having that conversation for 15 months now.

AlternatePersonMan@lemmy.world 14 hours ago
Fox News. Endless propaganda and ratings driven idiocy. People watch the most alarmist “news” and they jump on this bandwagon of stupidity. In particular, people of limited education/intelligence love to be anti science, because for once they can feel like the person that is actually smart.
It’s scary.

If you wonder why people trust authorities so much we own part of that to centuries of living under rulers and people getting leashed.
