I am new to this whole Fediverse stuff. Trying to privatize my life and break away from big tech.
But I have to ask, why are you guys here and not on Reddir? Where the population us much larger and its basically the same? It appears a few instances dominate this landscape anyway?
Its not like this is unchecked social media, they still moderate these places right? So what’s the benefit?
Why am I on Lemmy and not any other social media? I had read about it on Reddit, but I hopped on as soon as I heard about the API changes. The writing was on the wall, and I remembered this place as being popular. I’m also down to try new sites, so if you have any other recommendations, I’m here for them.
Other people said to leave because third party apps were being shut down, so I left.

The main reason is that they took away my preferred app, and the official app is excessively noisy (visually) to the point that I just can’t parse anything on the screen without huge effort. Doom scrolling is supposed to be brain off time, not brain work extra hard time.

TBF with you I’ve been here for more than a year and only miss 1 single community, and I don’t have to “go back” to see the posts (which is what matters).

They shut down third party apps like Apollo. That was my last draw.
Fuck using that garbage official app.
Same for me as well. Voyager and lemmy instances are what filled that immediate reddit void for me.
I’m a communist. I don’t mean to say I’m here because of the leftist population (though, that is nice sometimes, but as in any lefty heavy place there’s infighting and bullshit), but rather I have certain values that guide my decision making process, and one of them is not supporting massive corporations and shitty services when possible. Lemmy is an alternative to reddit that doesn’t benefit the same class of people as reddit, while actively benefiting the people who actually use it.

Because I got banned for “threatening violence” one too many times and every case was me making a joke about getting rid of fascists by any means necessary.
I use Reddit through Relay and it’s gone now. Even if I want to use Reddit, I have to jump through hoops to use it.
Some greedy little pigboy decided to lock down the API and kill third party apps.
Lemmy feels like the old Reddit that i love.
I have no moral reasons like most do really.

I intentionally only seek chill and meme subreddit/comms. and even then some people just can't help tripping themselves shoving negative crap onto meme comms.
I’m at both. I pay for relay for reddit because that was my app in the before times so I didn’t really have to do anything. I’m here so I can eventually get off reddit because while I still pay to use it. It’s a shell of its former self. The growth set lemmy is pretty slow however not sure why there is so little content and new users. We are kind of stuck.
How does it work? You can pay for third party apps for reddit? How much does it cost?
The reddit admins got a little fashy for my taste. i got a 7-day ban for saying Luigi probably didn’t deserve to go to prison for what he did, they called it inciting violence. The ban was lifted on appeal of course, because it was bullshit, but not before I was then given a permanent ban for circumventing the temp ban with another account. It, too, was liftedo on appeal because it, too, was bullshit (I was on reddit for 14 years and never even made a throwaway, much less other accounts in general), but by that point I’d had enough.
Also it’s very not the same, as you will learn if you spend some time here. I find people are generally friendlier and a lot less hostile here.
I’ve hated Reddit since back when shitredditsays was in its hay day, and after they banned the Chapo subreddit I retreated to only really using a few local subreddits to keep track of local news.
When the exodus started two ish years ago I jumped on the bandwagon and haven’t logged back into Reddit ever since.
I call y’all reddit.world as a joke but you aren’t nearly as bad.

Larger population but also more bots, more cortent that’s irrelevant to me and more corporate bullshit. And it’s been getting worse and worse. I prefer it here. It’s a more focused experience but imo that’s not a bad thing.
Because Reddit is run by a psycho who looks forward to owning slaves after the downfall of civilisation.
Because Reddit locked out third party apps and when asked for an explanation, their first instinct was to lie.
Because Reddit disguises its adverts as user posts.
Because Reddit is overrun with fake user accounts trying to control discourse on the internet.
Because Reddit’s real users will post Among Us jokes in threads about school shootings to farm karma.

First thing you quickly realize here is that larger is not necessarily better. Small is beautiful, you can have actual thoughtful conversations with individuals here without the incessant dogpiling and low effort meme replies. I have even got smacked down (and rightly so) for accidentally bringing some of that with me at one point. It’s not needed or desirable here.

When you actually look at the comments I usually find almost everyone is on a different instance, in fact when there are relatively small numbers of comments like the are on most posts, you often won’t even see the same instance in the comments twice unless it’s the same person. Yeah, some instances have “huge numbers” of people and communities (lemmy.world) but I think a lot of them are honestly just rarely used, abandoned, or otherwise non-participatory, and the communities can be used by anybody (which is exactly the point of federation). The people actually spending their time here are on a wide variety of instances, often even using different frontends or software. And that’s great. To me, the ecosystem feels healthy and diverse.

The point is you can choose an instance whose moderations suit you. (Almost?) all instances moderate to some degree, complete unmoderation is how you end up infested with child porn and other horrible shit. But the directions they moderate in, and the specific things they moderate, can vary wildly depending on the preferences of the owners and the countries they operate in. They also federate with and defederate different instances, which is a large-scale form of moderation. Most instances defederate (and have been defederated by) hexbear and lemmygrad. But not all of them do. Some also defederate lemmy.ml. But not most. And of course those three still federate with each other, and with some other instances. The point isn’t to completely prevent isolated echo chambers, it’s to allow the instances themselves (and the users who join them) to choose how much echo they want to hear compared to how many challenging views they disagree with. Everyone should be able to find a balance that suits them. Most of the people complaining about the content on Lemmy have probably just chosen the wrong instance, frankly, because most people don’t understand how this works and the biases and moderation attitudes inherent in all these different instances is not always super obvious at first glance.
Reddit sucks now. I still check there regularly but I find both the content and the commenting less and less interesting and find myself spending less and less time there. It hasn’t been a sudden process, but the more time I spend on Lemmy the more I like it and the more communities I find and engage in.

I’m in the “they killed third party app support” camp. There was no way I was switching to their app. I quit cold turkey the day API access was shut down.
I never used a third party Reddit app, what did you dislike most about the Reddit app? It doesnt seem too bad aside from all the ads.
I don’t reward companies who make shitty decision after shitty decision.
The second that pig boy said that Reddit’s “corpus of data” was his to sell.
The fuckstain showed that the people that were the corpus of data were irrelevant to him, and every decision they’ve announced since that moment has driven that message home.
The population isn’t really bigger any more. It’s propped up by bots and reposts so much that the actual humans get buried outside of niche subs.
Here, the chances of talking to a bot are lower, and (barring newcomers that haven’t adapted to the culture yet) most of the people range from neutral to genuinely good.
A bigger population doesn’t help anyway. Most people in the world are stupid, or cruel, or just assholes. The bigger a given platform gets, the more you run into those because it’s a numbers game.
A smaller platform can manage to self regulate and, bluntly, drive the serious assholes away. But once things get big enough, the assholes take over because there’s too many of them to drive out.
I’m not saying lemmy doesn’t have assholes. I’m just saying they don’t dominate the discourse, and tend to have a high turnover rate.
That’s why I’m on lemmy.
It’s not clear what split between bots and humans is but I’m gonna be bold and assert that bots comprise the majority of engagement. Those pesky inventions shouldn’t be allowed to write our holy language, they created nothing, contribute nothing and regurgitate the same verbiage slop. And ever more present in everyday life like in banking or other services.
This seems more human, idiots and all alike, agreeing or not, most comments seem from actual people. There’ll be a time when human engagement will be exploited at a premium as corpos seize and try to monetise ever more of the human experience. Federated platforms will be the bastions of human connectivity, these or other similar platforms without a profit motive. I’d rather engage with people.

Privately owned centralized platforms like Reddit, Twitter, Instagram, etc, are a recipe for disaster. So I left.
