Is this the guy that wanted people to pay for reloading ingame? Society really is built to make idiots rich.
Wahots@pawb.social 11 months ago
I was like “how could discord be any worse?” Then this drops xD
andybytes@programming.dev 11 months ago
I just don’t take anything serious… I refuses to pay for anything and always a inch from burning it all down. Social media just is not for me but I love harvesting knowledge.
ArtificialHoldings@lemmy.world 11 months ago
Anyone looking for an alternative, Revolt is FOSS and pretty much on par with Discord in 2015. They have voice chat and video chat is in development on their roadmap. You can even self-host your own server.
AugustWest@lemm.ee 11 months ago
I never got the appeal of discord, but that’s fine.
The use of it as a support for a project? So bad.
Hopefully it will collapse and go away.
EndlessNightmare@reddthat.com 11 months ago
Network effect. The platform itself isn’t great, but it’s reached a critical mass of popularity.
TriflingToad@sh.itjust.works 11 months ago
I’ve coped long enough, that’s the final straw for me.
I’m cancelling my $3/month subscription and putting $1 to my instance, $1 to Wikipedia, and $1 to the Internet Archive. Not a lot but it’s better than discord.
Olgratin_Magmatoe@slrpnk.net 11 months ago
RIP discord.
bfg9k@lemmy.world 11 months ago
Back to self-hosted teamspeak then I guess
user entered your channel

o7 rip Discord, you wont be missed.

I like Matrix, but it isn’t exactly the easiest platform to use and definitely has some jankiness with voice/video calls.
ArtificialHoldings@lemmy.world 11 months ago
Revolt is pretty good! Most of the features you want from discord are already there. It’s FOSS and servers can be self-hosted.
jsomae@lemmy.ml 11 months ago
element isn’t bad tbh. I’ve been using it lately, and it’s actually caught up a lot.
Baguette@lemm.ee 11 months ago
Discord is never going to be profitable lmao
It can be a loss leader for microsoft, but at the end of the day, discord will always lose money. The operational cost of discord is way too high
This change just means more enshittification like with every ceo change.
Honestly they should just go full on points shops for spending money on xbox, like steam. Give out points to use for customization. That way they could at least make some incentive to use xbox and probably boost sales.
princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 months ago
Does Microsoft own Discord?
Baguette@lemm.ee 11 months ago
You just made me look it up and apparently they canceled it when I heard about it
So nvm discord is doomed LOL They’re purely running on vc money and sooner or later this company will explode
qevlarr@lemmy.world 11 months ago
But why? People just want to talk and chat. The technology has been around for ages! Let users host their own servers
FilthyShrooms@lemmy.world 11 months ago
Was anyone else having trouble making a revolt account yesterday? I kept getting an error, I assume their servers are experiencing an influx of new users
ArsonButCute@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 months ago
I’m already working on a tool to replace discord for my gaming group. Planning on rolling out a stack of open source IM and Voice/Video chat with ActivityPub for text chat rooms.
Integrating them all into one app is where I’ll have trouble, especially since when replacing big corpo tools they need to work perfectly the first time or nobody willvdver want to use it.
__ghost__@lemmy.ml 11 months ago
Can you provide a list of your stack? Doing the same has crossed my mind but I haven’t done much research yet
ArsonButCute@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 months ago
I’m still early in the research phases but so far the plan is a combined client for Galene and Mastadon. The current plan is to rip apart the apps as they exist and pull out the chunks useful for my needs, then build a basic webapp to interface with them that I can share with my friends.
Ideally I’d like to eventually roll out a docker image of the server stack as well so anyone can host it with just a couple clicks.

“Well I’ve been rolling down this well-worn road…”
recklessengagement@lemmy.world 11 months ago
Quit discord last year. Moved my core friend group onto Signal.
Potential alternatives and their issues:
- Guilded: owned by Roblox, faces same data/privacy concerns
- Discourse: backed by venture capital, same as above
- Revolt: slow development, no game streaming, otherwise decent
- Matrix: high technical barrier of entry, but promising.
If you’re looking to kick discord as well:
For game streaming, try Parsec (with their echo cancellation trick)
For movie/video streaming, try Hyperbeam.
UltraGiGaGigantic@lemmy.ml 11 months ago
Thanks for reviewing these for us. I’ve tried some but not all of these.
applemao@lemmy.world 11 months ago
Problem is people are fucking lazy and will not move to another platform. I want teamspeak and vent back but people nowadays won’t even try. So we are forced to keep using it. People have no balls to stand up to corpos just to learn something new. It’s infuriating.
AugustWest@lemm.ee 11 months ago
Uh… You stand up to corpos. Just leave. Nobody is forcing you to use it.
applemao@lemmy.world 11 months ago
That’s well and good for us, but then we are just the isolated few who do it compared to all our friends that stay with discord because they’re comfortable on it.
UltraGiGaGigantic@lemmy.ml 11 months ago
You can use matrix and still keep in touch with the lazy people. Having a place for people to go when they eventually get fed up will help a ton.
Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world 11 months ago
I want teamspeak and vent
xFire. God I miss xFire. It was better 10 years ago than any service before or since.
Iirc Yahoo frivolous-lawsuit’ed them out of existence. Q_Q
BakerBagel@midwest.social 11 months ago
12 years ago Skype and team speak were the go to for voice chat for gaming. Once someone comes up with a less shitty platform, everyone will start to migrate again.
wise@feddit.uk 11 months ago
Another issue is console integration. I’ve got friends I play with using cross-play (PC-PS5), but the only service we can both use is Discord unless they use multiple devices.
I would love to use Mumble, Matrix or Revolt but it’s the same hurdle.

Matrix is a good replacement for the text and image bit of Discord, but can anyone suggest a good alternative for the voice comms?
tatterdemalion@programming.dev 11 months ago
Matrix also has video calls
supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 11 months ago
Fuck Discord, I hope they go pedal to the medal and destroy the company in record time.
Goretantath@lemm.ee 11 months ago
Pedal to the “metal”.

We need an fos alternative
greybeard@lemmy.one 11 months ago
I agree. Discord actually had a metaphor that I think plays well for federation. Specifically, they called each group a server. And organized the UI in a way that would make federation pretty transparent.
The only consufsing bit would be the concept of a home server login ID. Like, the lack of a central identity provider. But I think that isn’t a show stopper.
I kinda wish there were fed ID providers that all fed servers used for login and authentication. I’m not sure exactly how that would work, but being able to have a single identity across mastodon, Lemmy, and any other fed service would really simplify things once you were in the fediverse.

Enshitification applies to EVERYTHING
Empricorn@feddit.nl 11 months ago
Linux hasn’t enshittified. Neither has the fediverse. Enshittification applies to everything corporate and for-profit.

welp! pack it up! How’s BSD this time of year?
spankmonkey@lemmy.world 11 months ago
Originally it was a good descriptor of tech companies starting out as useful and then turning to shit as they leaned into becoming profitable, but if you was to use it as “things get shitty in favor of profits” then I guess it could apply to everything.
I liked the original where it had nuance and was a good shorthand specific to the tech trends.
azron@lemmy.ml 11 months ago
Words can entshitify? Ahhhh. Everything given enough time will gravitate to its natural state of sucking ass. It’s the you didn’t die when you were the hero scenario all the way down.
archonet@lemy.lol 11 months ago
Oh yeah, we’re about to see things get really shitty on Discord.
applemao@lemmy.world 11 months ago
Already have embedded ads. I’m about done with this shit and willing to have no one to talk to just so I don’t give discord the satisfaction of using their Spyware.

Discord is like the dread pirate Roberts combined with a used car salesman. "I'll probably kill you tomorrow, you should buy nitro"
