I think I should be more clear: I agree that it is reasonable to pay a platform that is fair.
The comparison to youtube is where it gets lost for me:
The issue is that, in general, the value of watching what is typically on youtube is about the level of free. If it cost me money, I could do without, it just isn’t that important. I will find better ways to spend my time. So with Nebula, you have a platform that is more like just another streaming service, albeit a good one for independent creators. But that leaves me thinking what do they have that I would bother watching? Which is a pretty high bar (I didnt even own a tv for nearly 20 years). It seems less like youtube and more like HBO for independents on paper, and without free access how would I know the difference?

Sure anytime.

That would be an improvement, how would I know I want anything in a store I have to pay before I even consume anything?
I have several subscriptions ditectly to people making things I like.
On the otherhand, I miss when people made things because they liked to. I still do that. I run several sites that has no ads, no charge, because I like the communities I am sharing with.
Then again, it’s not my job so I am afforded that luxury I guess.

Lol, OK.
- Comment on YouTube might slow down your videos if you block ads 4 weeks ago:
Why be an asshole? Yes I like free I also make things for free. Not everything has to cost.
For ongoing series I like I support directly, like anyone else. Not the platform.

Nope.
- Comment on WhatsApp is officially getting ads 4 weeks ago:
But then aren’t you trusting your credentials to yet another application? That seems like a bad idea…
- Comment on YouTube might slow down your videos if you block ads 4 weeks ago:
I’ll never go there. Paid is a no way situation.

Most of those things are better without videos anyways. So much wasted time to get to the point.
As for documentaries… Are good ones actually on YouTube?

2000 Websites? WTF why?

For the first time strangers were meeting other than face to face, and without any of the social context clues that would have previously guided us in person.
The suggest this was the 90’s? More like the 80’s. BBS were doing this for quite a while.

Yeah, this will work for a while but I think the days have gotta be numbered.
Best long term solution? Leave YouTube.
- Comment on If we replace most plastic with a non plastic alternative and would that really be better? 1 month ago:
I get your point, but I gotta say: I do want to buy my ketchup in a plastic bottle. And I do, mostly because the ketchup is 10 times better than then generic crap that is Heinz or whatever major name.
But I don’t mind shaking the bottle, it’s not hard.
Most things I don’t want plastics for, and in the case of viscous fluids, why not jars?
It would be nice to drop off the jar with the local mustard maker and get a fresh one. Standardizing on glass sizes would help a lot, but then of course we gave water issues for cleaning all of them.

Never heard of glance. It’s an ai shopping tool? I couldn’t make sense of it, but I didn’t spend much time either.

So assuming you are traveling, what do you bring with you if it isn’t a mobile streaming device, a laptop, or a mobile device that you are going to stream to?
- Comment on Plex now will SELL your personal data 1 month ago:
You saying you wouldn’t have those things away from home? Or a firestick.
- Comment on Plex now will SELL your personal data 1 month ago:
Tailscale makes this easy if you are only user.
- Comment on Plex now will SELL your personal data 1 month ago:
“install this app on your tv and log in”, which is exactly what Plex does
Yes, but that person has to create an account. Everyone has to create an account. With Plex. Some people I know immediately say no, others are annoyed that plex would try and shake them down for money.
If you configure Jellyfin, all that goes away. THEN they can simply download the app and login.

I got concerned when people started buying Plex hats. And being excited about that purchase.
I noticed that Logo on Hats people are willing to pay for is often a bit concerning.
- Comment on YouTube tops Disney and Netflix in TV viewing 1 month ago:
Oh boy it’s kind of hard to explain. A comedian gets actors to practice things, like a rehearsal for an event. In this case he wants to improve airline safety because most accidents are because co-pilots don’t speak up when there is a problem. So he invents ways to recreate those scenarios with actors and complete airport, real pilots and co pilots.
We see a real former aviation safety cobsultant and former safety board worker who has been trying to improve airline safety, a congressman, doctors and more, while we discover the pressure of pilots to never talk about their feelings for fear of losing their jobs. Pilots and copilots sit in silence before flights, it’s crazy.
The series escalates with more elaborate and surprising reveals including a real contest and deals with rejection, autism, and the themes of dealing with a dovorce and being alone.
Its a comedy, its somewhat shocking, and it is entertaining while being a bit disturbing in many ways.

I’m not emotional, I am calm, lol. I think you took that too seriously. But seriously I kid you not the rehearsal this season really was that good.
- Comment on YouTube tops Disney and Netflix in TV viewing 1 month ago:
Those are all two to 4 minutes long…
And branch out to what exactly? You shaming my shows I like to watch? Or at least a lot of people like to watch?
Do you really call the rehearsal a pop show? You ever seen it? This season was amazing.
- Comment on YouTube tops Disney and Netflix in TV viewing 1 month ago:
No. None of those things are on YouTube.
- Comment on YouTube tops Disney and Netflix in TV viewing 1 month ago:
Really? Does it have the latest episodes of Doctor who, the rehearsal, or last of us? How about old shows like star trek Voyager?
- Comment on YouTube tops Disney and Netflix in TV viewing 1 month ago:
Most of what I would want to watch is definitely not on youtube. Although most of what I want to watch that is on YouTube is not on a pay channel. They seem apples to oranges to me, which is what I was driving at.
I wonder if they count listening to music with still image as “watching”.
- Comment on YouTube tops Disney and Netflix in TV viewing 1 month ago:
I am not sure why I got downvoted: your use case is exactly what I was thinking. And the other person who responded to me as well: you tube is watched a lot, but the content is largely like apples to oranges compared to say HBO or even Tubi.
- Comment on YouTube tops Disney and Netflix in TV viewing 1 month ago:
Conversely what is there to watch on YouTube? I mean I obviously have seen video on you tube of one kind or another, but it’s never been a place to go to watch a TV show or movie.
- Comment on The Copilot Delusion 1 month ago:
Particularly code. B Gates grabbed code out of the trashcan to learn, then actively tried to kill open source.
Math, and code in particular, is something you have to work with to learn. The concepts cannot be stolen, the only thing you could is if you copied the whole program excatly and AI does not learn (or at least retain) that way.
- Comment on The Copilot Delusion 1 month ago:
You lose me at stolen. If we are talking code anyway.
