Yeah the block and ban thing these days is really weird.
If someone is harassing you, then I guess it makes sense. But otherwise why do people do that?
- Comment on Are We All Becoming More Hostile Online? 1 week ago:
Back in the day I just assumed everyone was lying. Or trying to get people worked up, and we called them trolls.
Learning how to ignore the trolls, and not having trust for strangers on the internet, coupled with the ability to basically not care what random people said is a lost art.
Somehow people forgot to give other the people this memo, including the “you don’t fucking join social networks as your self”. Anonymity makes this all work.

- Comment on Windows Is Adding AI Agents That Can Change Your Settings 1 week ago:
There is no problem. Yes, they pretty much are consistent distro to distro. Desktop to Desktop is a bit different but not by much.
My grandparents have had a much easier time with Linux than Windows. Both environments would be confusing to look up if something goes wrong. Fortunately since linux packages are updated together, not much goes wrong. Cant say that for windows. Stuff is always popping up and asking questions and changing.

Why is this repeated over and over on Lemmy? It is nonsense.
There is a button. You don’t need the terminal any more or less than any other OS. Yes people give advice with commands. They are not magic nor arcane, but it is so much easier to tell you to do a command than 20 pages of diagrams and drawings on how to use the gui to do the same thing.

Not anymore. They changed the prices and discounts by quite a bit.

I run them side by side too. I also have plexpass from ahes ago.
But I actually like the jellyfin ui better. It’s simple, to the point and most importantly fast. Sit. Down click jellyfin click show, go.
Plex just feels laggy and sloppy in comparison.
- Comment on Do you use other federated software besides Lemmy (e.g. Mastodon/Pixelfed/etc.), if so which? 2 weeks ago:
There it is again. That term “gatekeeping”. I see it here so damn often, but nobody ever can back up the claim.
You are saying: people are actively trying to make things difficult to use in order to keep people out? Can you give me an example? Has anyone in the fediverse rejected YOUR proposal to improve anything? Pull requests made and denied?
Ever consider that it is not gatekeeping, but the lack of millions of dollars on advertising and venture capital that makes people think anything else is easy to use? Instagram and Facebook are MUCH harder to join and MUCH harder to curate for anything useful, and keep some sanity on your privacy, but nobody complains about them.

It won’t be. It can’t be. It will have to monetize, then it will have to restrict, and you end up with the same problems Reddit has.

I just recently found out Reddit has achievements. I don’t use their official apps or new desktop so I never saw them. When I see what Reddit looks like to most people it is so bizarre. Like completely different experience.
Thank goodness Lemmy looks and feels the way it should.

I am being disingenuous? You make a very bold claim that people are “gatekeeping” open source software. You then claim that everything in Linux outside of web browsing requires the command line. I am completely serious.
All I am asking you to do is back up those claims.
Either you have a specific gripe that should be addressed, or you are just spreading bullshit online or trolling. Which one is it?

Having to do most real things besides browsing the internet via command line on 2025
What are these “most things”? I haven’t had to use the command line on this laptop I am typing on since I got it a year ago. Files, music, shares, my own cloud storage on s3, photo editing, etc? What are “most things” to you?
And even if it was “most things” you are not showing an example of gatekeeping. Give me an example, such as you submitting a pull request for a GUI for a current command line only “most things” that was rejected.
- Comment on The YouTube Alternative Nobody's Talking About ! Peertube 2 weeks ago:
Can you show me an example of gatekeeping in this space? I am not sure that word means what you think it means.
I mean it is open source, ANYONE can create a different UI and fork the code, which is drastic but an option.
Are you saying you have submitted UI improvements as pull requests to several projects and had them tell you they would not merge due to a desire to keep the UI the way they designed it?
- Comment on Your Phone Isn’t Eavesdropping on You to Show You Ads (It’s Worse Than That) 2 weeks ago:
I am not downplaying the phone spying on me, I imagine it is.
But ads are the least of my concerns. I see less ads now than at any other time in my life.
So how do I know if it happening to me?
- Comment on The YouTube Alternative Nobody's Talking About ! Peertube 2 weeks ago:
And sadly now I have to watch a video. Wouldn’t step by step instructions be quicker and more effective? Yes. They were. Now it’s some video wasting my time.
Not sure that is a great example.

Not really. At least if you plan to have it customizable in the first place.

The use of it as a support for a project? So bad.

Well yeah. My bicycle odemeter has settings for different size wheels.
We used to take vehicles in for calibration and then all runs had to use the same psi in the tires.

I have test all three methods. GPS is the best, but it has drop outs. You can add an inertial gyro system to compensate, but that becomes sloppy the longer it goes without GPS.
The tire method has a lot of variances, but the measure at the transmission is often worse.

I see it the other way around. Linux just works, windows is the constant trouble shooting. Look at what you are talking about doing right now.
I have to work with Windows environments, I work with their desktop, servers, and cloud environment. I do it all from a Linux machine because it is reliable and the most predictable. Also the most sensible desktop to work from but that is another conversation.
