Unfortunately they’ve become immune to irony
I find it funny that American republicans seem to want a king, when the definition of republicanism is a government without a king.

Well knowledge can be found in a library…
Can’t trust anything that comes from something that even sounds like liberal!

I blame all the satire.
It didn’t just go over their heads, they took it as truth and ran with it.
Hazor@lemmy.world 1 day ago
They also call themselves “the party if law and order”, but made a convicted felon their king. They also say they favor “small government”, but try to use the government to dictate what people can do with their own bodies. They also say they’re defenders of free speech, but then call the news media “the enemy of the people”. They also portray themselves as the party of Christianity, but actively try to do everything the opposite of what Jesus Christ taught.
The Republican party isn’t known for being honest.
peregrin5@lemm.ee 1 day ago
One thing I learned as I grew up is that in politics, words mean the opposite of what they mean.
Examples:
The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is neither democratic, a republic, or for the people.
The Nationalist Socialist Party had a problem with actual socialists.
ObviouslyNotBanana@lemmy.world 1 day ago
Right. Sweden is a Kingdom, but it’s one of the most liberal democracies in the world.
aeronmelon@lemmy.world 1 day ago
Just like how Japan had, up until late last year, been majorly under the governance of the Liberal Democratic Party (Read: Conservative traditionalists).
Snowclone@lemmy.world 1 day ago
Technically speaking they’re using the words correctly, liberalism is describing the freedom of capitalists to do as they please above all else, Republicans in the US aren’t traditionalist, they are neoliberals who want unregulated capitalism, and if course they are highly racist nationalists who want to improve white birth rates by any reduction of civil rights possible, and ethnic clensing, the democrats on the other hand prefer status quo neo liberalism, being closer to what you’d call a conservative, in their system unfettered capitalism along with conservative status quo is a pretty accurate use.

Appearances (AKA propaganda) are key to despotism. If many people with rifles know how awful you are, you’re in deep shit. On the other hand, if you either ensure few people have rifles or confuse enough of them into thinking everything is okay, you’ll be fine.

Yeah, the Republican party originally was the progressive one IIRC

The great switch and the southern strategy.

Correct. There’s a reason why Strom Thurmond switched parties.

Also, the whole point of them having guns was to stop a king taking over there aren’t any kings in schools

He put out a fake magazine cover of himself with a crown with the NYC skyline with ‘‘long live the king’’. And his goons have been using the phrase dutifully.

Any info on if it is or not?
Not gonna sign up for truth social to verify it but wouldn’t surprise me if it is real.

This is the same crowd who danced to RATM - Killing in the Name during their blue lives matter phase. Irony is a foreign word to them, and we know how well they like foreigners.

Oh wait, no, I’m just really fucking depressed to the point of insanity.

I feel there is nuance.
I have a joke that the Congress would create a department of impeachment and place it under the president. I know it’s not really a knee slapper.
congress has been abdicating since the Wilson administration (at least) and we are now seeing the consequences of those actions.
if you had elected me to be president, is have scuttled an aircraft carrier and a nuclear sub during my inauguration speech, and if me dismantling the bureau of Indian affairs, the bureau of prisons, the federal bureau of investigation, the central intelligence agency, and the NSA ( whose full name i can’t summon at the moment) just as we see trump dismantling agencies I think are mostly benign.
the problem is that Congress has had no courage for a century.
Spazz@lemmynsfw.com 1 day ago
Lololololololololol fuck right pretending there’s any nuance.
It’s fascism plain and simple
nsrxn@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 day ago
wilson was a fascist and set us on this course. you can’t expect a fascist government to keep fascists out of power.
but the problem is in the creation of these executive agencies. someone coming along to abuse them was in the cards the whole time.
l_b_i@pawb.social 1 day ago
Disclaimer, I don’t like what is being done, I think its wrong, damaging, and questionably legal, at least the process that is currently in progress.
To add more nuance and explanation, There are only 3 branches of government, and when congress says we want a thing done, the executive is the one to execute, because where else could you even put it? For truly independent agencies, I think you need to amend the constitution for that. The current administration is taking that to heart and taking more of an active role, often beyond bounds set, in what is still lower level of the executive. If you were to go to an org chart of the people being fired, and departments being closed, if you went up a few levels you would get to the president. As much as NIH, or CDC, or USAID, or any others are independent, at the end of the day, they are part of the executive.
Most of what is being done has been done or tried to be done before, not necessarily at the same time.
As for your list, I’d be careful about throwing the baby out with the bath water, the NSA is involved with evaluating encryption, although there is some checkered history (DES) in this role.
The FBI helps coordinate multi state investigations
Intelligence from the CIA would be useful, but their history of foreign meddling that has come back to bite is a bit hard to overlook.
nsrxn@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 day ago
the executive is the one to execute, because where else could you even put it?
the congress. the congress could make a law. it’s that simple. the fugitive slave act didn’t need a fucking Agency of Slave Recovery.
nsrxn@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 day ago
For truly independent agencies, I think you need to amend the constitution for that.
i don’t think we need most of these agencies at all, but those that are needed could still be created directly under the supervision of congress. would it make their lives harder? yes. but it would also stop any autocratically-minded executive from doing what’s being done.

the marshals already existed before the fbi.

All Republicans truly want, is hypocrisy
FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 1 day ago
I find it funny that Democrats are the ones who invented superdelegates so that their candidates can’t actually be selected democratically.
Yes. Our political system is crap.

They don’t want a King, they want a dictator. Different.
OpenStars@discuss.online 1 day ago
They are also “patriots” and “Christians” (love they neighbor - who is that? everyone. what does it look like? not… like… that) and “smurt” and “efficient” and so on.
Xeroxchasechase@lemmy.world 1 day ago
It’s not funny, it’s deception.
someguy3@lemmy.world 1 day ago
Before the party switch the right wing was Democrats. Just as bad that they want “democracy” when they want a King. But I think it was they wanted majority rule over black people. “Teehee, see it’s majority rule to segregate.”
Kolanaki@pawb.social 1 day ago
Republican’ts.
Majorllama@lemmy.world 1 day ago
The Trump worshippers do not represent “the Republicans”. They represent Trump worshippers.
The only two groups I have heard say anything about wanting a “king” have been the brain damaged Trump cult and the far left people that keep (incorrectly) assuming that is how all Republicans and conservatives think as well.
TachyonTele@lemm.ee 1 day ago
The Republican party is the trump party now. Every single one of them want him in charge.
Majorllama@lemmy.world 1 day ago
Just blatantly incorrect, but I’m not gonna try and convince you otherwise. It would clearly be a waste of my time.
db2@lemmy.world 1 day ago
There are no Republicans of the type you’re thinking of. Not anymore.

It’s almost as though people are individuals or something.

Nope, fuck that, Trump and all his supporters are Republican
Majorllama@lemmy.world 1 day ago
I mean… Yes his supporters are all Republicans, but not all Republicans are his supporters.
You know how many of y’all voted for Biden and then Kamala even though you didn’t really like them? The other side is capable of doing the exact same thing.
