The Firefox snap package was absolutely fucked last time I tried Ubuntu. I had to manually add a repository to get Firefox via apt instead. That was a few years ago and it’s probably fine now, but I don’t really use Ubuntu anymore because of this. Why snap even exists when we have flatpak is also beyond me

Exactly. It’s also spoken in that order for that reason. At least in the languages I know. If I ask you for the date and you start with 2026, I’ll be a litte confused.

This is only true when dealing with huge amounts electronic data, for easy sorting and such. DD:MM:YYYY is superior for everyday use. Don’t even try to change my mind

Ugh, in the guitar community there’s this myth that the wood type, body shape etc. of an electric guitar influences the sound. If it does, it’s immeasurably small. It’s almost entirely about the pickup circuitry and string position relative to the pickups.

Kartoffeln is just short for Kartoffelnachtschattengewächs, so it doesn’t really count.

Fun fact: Einwohnermeldeamt is the shortest German word beside “Ja”, “Nein” and “Wadenbeinfraktur”

On today’s standard controller layout, it’s easy to use both D-Pad and left Joystick without a third grip. I don’t see how that wouldn’t have been possible in 1996?

Our (privatized) mail service offers an identification process to third parties where you either walk into a post office with your physical ID card or you make a video call with a call center and show it to them. I don’t think they transmit any more data than “over 18 yes/no”. So while data hording might often be the reason, I don’t think it’s the only one ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah that was the language barrier speaking. ID of course. You know you can get a new card at your local Einwohnermeldeamt (for a fee)?

It’s called AusweisApp:

The German passport (and I’m sure many others) has a NFC chip in it and you can use it with an open source app to securely prove your identity online. In cases like this, the only information pulled from your ID would be “over 18” or “not over 18”.
It’s one of the few things my government did right in the digital space. And yet almost nobody in the private sector uses this. I’m tired of being asked to upload a photo of my ID for age verification.
- Comment on Veganuary 4 weeks ago:
If you plan to reduce your meat intake, you don’t have to consider anything, really.
If you plan to eat fully vegan, you should look up B12 supplements and make sure to get some proteins (beans, lentils, tofu etc). The whole nutrition thing is not as big a problem as you think it is, though. If you’re unsure, maybe get a blood test done after a few months.

How do they list Nextcloud as an alternative to Google Drive but not to the Google office apps? LibreOffice is not really a substitute, Nextcloud Office/Collabora is.
- Comment on The TV industry finally concedes that the future may not be in 8K 5 weeks ago:
Yes I do. I want an actual smart TV with a practical, open source, TV-optimitzed Linux OS. It’s not that software on a TV is a bad idea in itself. It’s how it’s ruined by for-profit companies.

I’d much prefer if the majority of people was driving too careful. Being 5 minutes late is not a problem. Speeding is.

- Comment on Why do some people have so many tabs open on their browser? 3 months ago:
I don’t save tabs between sessions because of my ADHD. Otherwise I’d drown in them. This way I’m forced to use bookmarks for things I really need and the useless clutter gets removed once I close my browser.

Y’all are so occupied by this whole Epstein thing that you forget to riot every week because your government is literally dismantling what is left of US democracy.
Okay a couple rich people raped children. That’s horrible, but does it really matter now? Do you think the MAGA regime will just stop their fascist plans once there is hard evidence? Trump is above the law and his followers only believe what he says.

Those contribute to Linux, but not Desktop Linux and not at all gaming on Linux.

Trackpads give options. Sure most first person games have controller support. Coming from mouse and keyboard, I still can’t stand playing those with a stick though. Trackpad + Gyro is an absolute game changer, I prefer that even over a mouse now.
