We don't really work 9 to 5 but still call our job 9-to-5

I work 8-5. They say my lunch is unpaid but I’m salary. Fucken bullshit.
intensely_human@lemm.ee 10 months ago
You lucky bastard, getting paid 24 hours a day
Sanctus@lemmy.world 10 months ago
A salary is something The Man gives you to give up on your dreams.
jol@discuss.tchncs.de 10 months ago
But I do, acrually. As do many with office jobs?
intensely_human@lemm.ee 10 months ago
Every office job I’ve ever worked has been 8-5
HiddenLychee@lemmy.world 10 months ago
Can you tell me your industry so I never go into it?
tobogganablaze@lemmus.org 10 months ago
8 to 5 seems much more common where I am.
EmoDuck@sh.itjust.works 10 months ago
I always thought 9 to 5 was the actual standard american working time. I also thought it was weirdly late.
So at what time do Americans actually work?
bhamlin@lemmy.world 10 months ago
I mean, I’m at work from 8 to 5, but the hours where I actually do work are closer to 9 to 5…
Fredselfish@lemmy.world 10 months ago
7:30am to 4pm with 30 minute lunch break.
best_username_ever@sh.itjust.works 10 months ago
It is an American thing. In France it is usually 9 to 6 with a 2 hours lunch between because we like to have fun.
possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 10 months ago
If it isn’t 9 to 5 then why would you call it a 9 to 5
CodyCannoli@lemmy.world 10 months ago
I work 9 hour days with a 30 min lunch 6:30 - 4:00, Mon - Thurs. Then Friday is a half day, 6:30 - 10:30, its kind of growing on me. And if I feel like it I can just work a full day Friday and get easy 4 hours of overtime.
AlecSadler@sh.itjust.works 10 months ago
I’d love to work 9-5, I’m more like…6:45am to 9pm :|
Stalinwolf@lemmy.ca 10 months ago
7-3:30 most days, 5-1:30 others. I love it.
Gingerlegs@lemmy.world 10 months ago
9-6 for me. Thanks obama
Hack3900@lemy.lol 10 months ago
I’m not American, what did Obama do to weaken workers’ rights ?
Gingerlegs@lemmy.world 10 months ago
It’s a joke
intensely_human@lemm.ee 10 months ago
Well for one he was tall
sizing743@lemmy.ml 10 months ago
I literally do
Starb3an@sh.itjust.works 10 months ago
I work 3pm-11pm so I always say I work the evening shift.
intensely_human@lemm.ee 10 months ago
I can see why you’d say that
TheDubz87@lemmy.world 10 months ago
630-5 here. Of course, all of our office folk do, in fact, work 9-5.
grrgyle@slrpnk.net 10 months ago
It might not be 9-to-5, but it can still be a 9-to-5.
Chainweasel@lemmy.world 10 months ago
And that’s for the people lucky enough to be able to work 8 hours a day, I’m 5a-6p lol
nac82@lemm.ee 10 months ago
Quit. Maybe you can find some luck.
intensely_human@lemm.ee 10 months ago
I do about 10am to midnight five days a week. Fortunately my job is really easy.
haui_lemmy@lemmy.giftedmc.com 10 months ago
Only exceptionally bad jobs (or exceptionally well paid jobs) are not 9to5 ime.
WeeSheep@lemmy.world 10 months ago
9-5 doesn’t include unpaid lunch break. Do you eat at your desk while working?
SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 10 months ago
Paid lunch break
Burninator05@lemmy.world 10 months ago
Sometimes. My work is pretty variable. Some days I have to search for things to do. Others I have lots with short due dates. On busy days I eat at my desk. On really busy days I don’t eat. It evens out in the end because I can leave early on slow days to make up the time.
root@precious.net 10 months ago
Most jobs include a 30-60 minute paid lunch break, making 9-5 completely plausible.
intensely_human@lemm.ee 10 months ago

What? Where do you live? I’ve only ever had one job with a paid lunch break and I’ve worked a lot of jobs
weariedfae@lemmy.world 6 months ago
Yeah and in that movie those gals had a paid lunch hour WITHIN that 9-5 timeframe. Can you imagine? Damn that would be nice.
Every place I’ve ever worked most people who worked 8s worked 8-5 with a 1 hour unpaid lunch. In fact, 8-5 is what is considered business hours in my industry.
Thorny_Insight@lemm.ee 10 months ago
I used to work 7 - 3:30 but now that I can choose my own work hours I prefer not to start till 8
Splatterphace@lemm.ee 10 months ago
[deleted]intensely_human@lemm.ee 10 months ago
No, it’s called an anachronism. The phrase is a holdover from a couple decades ago when people’s lunch hour was generally paid.
Mastengwe@lemm.ee 10 months ago
Many people still work 9-5.
ParetoOptimalDev@lemmy.today 10 months ago
Observe your coworkers carefully and see how many work 7 hours per day.
HopingForBetter@lemmy.today 10 months ago
I definitely would argue most people don’t ever work 8 hours a day.
Even when I was scheduled in a factory, I had 10-15min here, 30min there of downtime waiting on the line, going poo, being told to change posts, watching people drop pallets and then everyone scrambling to pick up the spill.
That’s why I’ll always advocate work from home. Get your shit done, and get on with life.
