Even worse, I feel that over here (Central Europe) the sentiment towards Ukranian refugees is already shifting from “We need to help these poor people” to “These Ukranian refugees are taking our flats, our school places and our benefits”… I guess, another year or two and we’ll see far-right idiots setting fire to places where Ukranian refugees live. Same as we had in 2015 with Syrian refugees.
As harsh as it is, the color aspect definitely plays into it, but part of it is also expectations. Israel is expected be a developed place that’s at peace and not committing genocide. “Country X in Africa is in a state of {war, civil war, Warlord war, genocide, famine}” happens so frequently that it feels like “county X in Africa is currently stable and prosperous” would be newsworthy. That’s probably not reality, but that’s common perception, I think.

100% this. We’ve got a few Ukrainians in my very small town and my friend asked me why they’re here but we only ever got one Iraqi and one Syrian. I told him because the ukrainians are white.

Counterpoint, you’re not wrong in saying that we all should care about this, but if you look at other circumstances like the Civil War and Yemen, I don’t think most people do care about most things. We only care about this one because we’re invested in the Holy War.
There have been plenty of uproar about the crisis in Yemen, but ultimately the US didn’t budge from their support of Saudi Arabia, and then… what more is there to do?
It’s hard to build up momentum for a movement without the media on your side, and now Israel Palestine is in the news a lot, so that takes the focus. I sure would love to give more aid to stop bloodshed, poverty, and other crises.
What’s happening in Gaza has happened for decades. Only the media is highlighting the issue now, and we all know why.

I don't think this person cares about other people-their suffering or death. But I would imagine that if it were them being bombed, they would want other people to help keep them alive. It is a selfish and short view of the world.

Empathy, cognitive, emotional, compassionate, comes more naturally to some individuals over others.
What you see here is someone who may not understand the situation and its consequences, or has trouble forming a connection with the people impacted by the situation. But the compassion does show, they’re reaching out, asking questions, trying to understand.
I don’t think that’s a sign of a selfish or short-sighted person.
When something bad happens to your people, why should anyone else care?
What would be something that I could do that would meaningfully impact the conflict without investing a lot of time? There’s no material difference between someone who’s worrying about the conflict and someone who doesn’t care.
Same with Ukraine, Afghanistan leadership, Yemen’s starvation problem, Iran’s theocracy, Saudi Arabia’s treatment of journalists, China’s Muslim camps, Japan’s horrible work culture,etc. At some point, it’s harmful to oneself to give a shit.
Life isn’t about avoiding harm at all costs, and tuning out things that make you slightly uncomfortable.
Even smallest things you do can help because they also affect how other people think about it. But yes, you shouldnt worry about things beyond ones control too much.

But what does an end to all of this actually look like? I still remember when Rabin and Arrafat were awarded Nobel peace prizes because they thought Bill Clinton solved peace in the Middle East.

You’re basically correct, in this case. I’ve chosen my official “side” as that of humanity. I’m not fully certain what that means other than I feel for the protestors/people of both sides and don’t want bad things to happen to either. The governments directly involved here, such as they are, are in the business of revenge and power. The people in general are being played by their governments, pawns to be sacrificed or otherwise used to further the purpose.
Both sides are responsible for atrocities. One side suffers disproportionately because the other side imposes collective punishment.
The case is not so complicated. There is one criminal and one victim. Look for the source of the problem. Take a look at history, after the second world war.
It’s an interesting one to me for two reasons.
\1. Israels allies are culturally and ideologically opposed to what Israel has been doing in the region since WW2. It is imperialistic, subjugating and what the west has been trying to move away from in the layer half of the 20th century. However, it is strategic to them to support Israel so they will continue to bite their tongues and support heir ally.
\2. After the second world war Europe has been very cautious of any nation displaying imperialist intent. The mindset was featured heavily in the Falkland island conflict, etc. With Israel’s obvious intent of expanding their land, especially with Zionist ambition, many strategists in Europe may find themselves thinking of the similarities between 1940s Germany and the current political ideology of the state of Israel.
Not trying to take the side of any one in this conflict since it seems to be such a complete cluster fuck, just trying to understand. How does one go from terrorists attack and kill civilians, take hostages and hide behind other civilians, get attacked indiscriminately by Israel as response, turn into Israel is just looking to expand and conquer just like 40s Germany?

What is right is to keep in mind that "those people" that keep the war running are not all the people that live in that area. I suspect the majority of the population don't actively wish for a full-out war (even though there might be some or even many that support the underlying goal).

Yes, this particular conflict is very old and very, very messy and I can't even imagine an answer to what the least bad resolution of it would be. But keep in mind that most people that suffer under it probably don't want it.
This is exactly what I also don’t understand. I mean, I get some people don’t have the means to move elsewhere, and I sympathize with them a lot. But I would think any reasonable person would GTFO of that entire area as fast as possible. Who gives a fuck about land when it comes to you and your family’s life and we’ll being?

The Palestinians don’t really need support from the West. They just need to not be blockaded and terrorized by Israel. And their land and water not stolen. All they need is equal protection under international law.
The Arab and Muslim countries and humanitarian organizations are more than willing and able to support them. Your support is not needed.
In the American context, such a stance will be characterized as being anti-semitic and supporting Hamas. But it isn’t. It’s just being consistent and impartial.
Many Israelis actually also have a similar stance. And they get accused of being traitors.
Just knowing what’s right and what’s wrong, and your desire to help is more than enough, just be the voice of the victim.

I argue that every war since WW2 had people saying that it was the potential start of WW3.
The difference here is Israel wants WW3 to wipe out all their neighbors.
Most countries don’t want WW3. But Israel gets billions of dollars a year from other countries for their military so they’re way stronger than they should be militarily and especially since their “Gods chosen people” their rightwing government doesn’t think it’s possible they could lose.
The only thing that will change their mind is if other countries finally stop subsidizing them and let’s them fight a war on their own.
Not just a short 6 month freeze while they use their stockpile, but a full on refusal to ever back them
That’s why Israel spends so much energy on fighting the BDS movement. If they had to rely on their selves, they couldn’t be near as antagonistic to their neighbors. Without that, they’d have to work towards actual peace. And to even have a chance at that, the current government would need to be replaced. And those people would rather lose wars than personal power.

Both parties in palestine are ‘right’ when they limit themselves to their view. However, it all started when the British gave the Jews land (a hhge part of Palestine) that wasn’t theirs to give anx that’s when all the mess started in ‘modern history’. When you go back further it all boils down to the “you’re not part of our group, so I may kill you” attitude that’s pretty common between humans. (Alas) evolution didn’t solve this. A simple answer is because wether you like it or not what happens there influences global politics. Global politics influence the flow of goods and people and how your national politicians position them selves. So it influences, to some degree, what your next phone will cost, fuel prices, your bread prices etc. And emigration and refugee flows to your country and the rise and fall of different political themes in your country.
