- Comment on The State Department Says Israel Isn’t Blocking Aid. Videos Show the Opposite. 5 months ago:
“That is something that everybody can see with their own eyes. The killing of aid workers, the targeting of hospitals, the total destruction of the healthcare system, the massive number of civilian casualties, many of whom are women and children,” McManus said. “That does not happen in a context in which the prosecuting army is adhering to international law.”
This is key.
- Comment on Algerian man found alive after 26 years in neighbour’s cellar 5 months ago:
Could be, a lot of the slavery cases in the UK and Ireland seem to be like that.
- Comment on Algerian man found alive after 26 years in neighbour’s cellar 5 months ago:
He was only 19 when he was stolen and may not have had a science based education.
Reminds me a bit of the Jaycee Duggard case, she ended up interacting with lots of people without telling them that she was being held by a kidnapper.

Definitely. Global shipping is riddled with moral hazard and artificial externalities.

I think you might have replied to my comment by accident.
- Comment on Still trapped on Baltimore ship, months after bridge collapse 6 months ago:
Bit of a weird take. The ship had faulty equipment and the crew did what it could to try to avert the disaster.
The ship's owners are who you should blame.
- Comment on Why Are Rap*** & Ped** Protected In Jail? 6 months ago:
So, you're basically asking why we have a judicial system.
If you look at world history pretty much every human society comes up with a code of what is okay and what isn't, and once they get to a certain size they start standardizing punishments as well.
The reason for this is because it works a lot better than ad hoc justice which is too reliant on variables like who was there that day.
- Comment on Mods, what tips or etiquette do you recommend for reporting? 6 months ago:
downvotes go everywhere
Unless you're in kbin.social, which doesn't federate downvotes.
That said it's still handy for other kbin users and a good indication that it's been reported already.
- Comment on I'm so tired of hearing about US police brutality and China being authoritarian. Why does it feel like everyone is a hypocrite here? Where are the posts about Chinese protests and police brutality? 6 months ago:
This. There's nothing in western news media about domestic issues in China. If
@PumpkinDrama wants to know more they should look for books or articles about Chnese protests such as the anti PX protests and the anti nuclear plant protests.
- Comment on ‘Huge’ proportion of mental health conditions in Australia found to be caused by childhood maltreatment 6 months ago:
It's caused by a very common cognitive bias called the Just World Hypothesis.
It's tha same thing that makes people ask cancer patients what they "did" to get cancer.
Everyone wants to believe that their own good fortune is deserved and the corollary that unfortunate people deserve misfortune.
I hope I'm wrong but I think you're going to find that it's not generational.

I think they were objecting to the phrase "few and far between".
You really can't use it to describe a situation of almost 2 in 5.
If 2 in every 5 cars you see are red you can't say red cars are few and far between.

I don't get why you don't just post it once and then @ everyone you're talking to, instead of spamming it through the comments section and making us have to scroll through it multiple times.
- Comment on [Serious] Why do so many people seem to hate veganism? 6 months ago:
Well it's like the old joke says,
Q: how do you know someone's a vegan?
A: OH, THEY'LL TELL YOU.
Seriously tho I don't have a problem with them unless they start saying there's no difference betwern killing an animal and torturing it.

Haiti accumulated massive debt to European countries by 1914,
Weird way of putting it.
Haiti had massive debt thrust upon it by France's insistance that Haitians pay the French reparations for refusing to be their plantation slaves any longer.
- Comment on Sadiq Khan wins third term as London mayor saying he answered 'hate with hope' 6 months ago:
Ha ha ha no.
You're probably thinking about the time he had a disagreement with a Rabbi over the fact that he called for a ceasefire in Gaza.
His conservative opponent in the mayoral race tried to parlay that into a thing but she had to apologize in the end.

Thanks for the link to the Diplomat article by the way. It's a good article.
- Comment on Biden calls Japan and India xenophobic: ‘They don’t want immigrants’ 6 months ago:
Ah, yeah I agree with that. Modi is very concerning and the plight of refugees right now in India isn't great. Their children are also born stateless.
My focus was on raising awareness that there are refugees there. A lot of people don't seem to realize that most of the world's refugees are actually hosted in low income nations where they have sought refuge.
- Comment on If you take care of your parents or other elderly, how are you preparing to age gracefully? 6 months ago:
I think that's a great tip. You're right.
- Comment on Biden calls Japan and India xenophobic: ‘They don’t want immigrants’ 6 months ago:
@tearsintherain I'm not talking about policy and Modi's posturing though, I'm talking about facts. Who is trying to immigrate there.
Browse the UN's India refugees website, that will tell you everything you need about the thousands of refugees there.
The Myanmar border has had hundreds of people over it this year. Your link says they just deported a few dozen.
As your link points out, India's like the US in that it's not a signatory to the United Nations Convention on Refugees, so their status is precarious. Nevertheless, there refugees in India, that's simply a fact.
- Comment on Biden calls Japan and India xenophobic: ‘They don’t want immigrants’ 6 months ago:
Yeah, a bunch of places, those are just the two biggest population groups IIRC.
- Comment on Biden calls Japan and India xenophobic: ‘They don’t want immigrants’ 6 months ago:
I don't like that website but you're right, the UK are about the same as the US with just 15 or 16%.
I thought they were the same as the rest of the anglosphere but they're not! Shouldn't have picked them to make my point, should have picked Australia after all. Will edit.
My point still stands though. He had a really low bar of comparison, and if he knows immigration is what makes you strong then the obvious implication is he should be amping for more immigration.
Idk it just seemed like a really weird speech.
- Comment on Biden calls Japan and India xenophobic: ‘They don’t want immigrants’ 6 months ago:
I'm talking per capita. I've now edited the above comment and added a source.
Sorry for the confusion, I don't know why I thought that since I was talking about percentages it would be obvious I'm referring to per capita numbers, because re-reading my comment I see it's ambiguous.
But come on, have a heart. New Zealand only has 5 million people in it, total. You must think I'm incredibly, mindblowingly stupid if you think I'm saying the US somehow has fewer immigrants than that!
- Comment on If you take care of your parents or other elderly, how are you preparing to age gracefully? 6 months ago:
Based on my observations (of various old people in my life) of what works and what doesn't:
-
continue to gather and use evidence to make decisions
-
continue to be open minded to new ideas and new evidence
-
recognise your blind spots and have trusted people in your life to help with decisionmaking in those areas

Okay Biden now compare yourself to the UK which has about 35% more immigrants than the US.
Or Canada, or Australia, or Singapore, or Switzerland, or New Zealand...

Refugees from Myanmar and Afghanistan are hosted by India.
