I’m sure I’ve read this headline before and nothing came of it then.

Automattic declined to share a time frame as to when the migration would be complete, given its scale, but a rep for the company called the progress so far “exciting.”

Yeah, they’ve been talking about this for years now.

With all the decades of poorly made freshman intern tier spaghetti code Tumblr is built on it’s no surprise adding anything takes a long time.

Why did you link to a Mastodon post and not the actual article?

    source
    • Sergio@slrpnk.net ⁨3⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

The article seems well-written, except that:

the fediverse — the open social web powered by the protocol ActivityPub also used by Mastodon, Threads, Flipboard, and others.

Seriously? Flipboard has like one thousand Monthly Active Users and we have like 50 times that, but we’re like “and others” lel… I guess they didn’t mention Pixelfed either tho and it’s a lot “hotter”…

      source
      • nasi_goreng@lemmy.zip ⁨3⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

That article is intended for casual readers. These people might be more familiar with Flipboard than Lemmy or Pixelfed.

The same way that people are familiar with Blackberry or Nokia despite none of them even reach mainstream market anymore.

Flipboard is how you can federate BBC and a bunch of legit news networks. They’re pretty important imho

One thing at least is that when you search “Reddit alternatives”, most articles that I came across seemed to make out like Lemmy is the best option in terms of amount of users and not being advertised explicitly as a “free speech and censorship free platform”, which we all know really means “bigots are welcome here.” In fact when I was searching Reddit alternatives, it seemed to me that Lemmy is really the only option.

      source
  • b3an@lemmy.world ⁨3⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

Wow, way to try staying relevant I guess? They had a huge following and the porn was flowing during the good times. They blew their chance and now it’s a shell of itself. Fuck Tumblr.

of all platforms I didn’t expect the hellsite to federate.

    source
    • Scrollone@feddit.it ⁨3⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

They’ve been recently bought by Automattic (WordPress), so this doesn’t surprise me. I wouldn’t have expected it if they were still owned by their previous owner though.

      source
      • gofsckyourself@lemmy.world ⁨3⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

Because Automattic owns Tumblr and is run by a douchebag transphobe that is also destroying WordPress. (Though, to be fair WordPress is fucking trash)

You could just block them yourself if you don’t like leftist spaces that much

Tumblr doesn’t really strike me as leftist, so much as having a low signal:noise ratio

      What’s wrong?

Tumblr on fediverse by default will increase variation of community in fediverse. Especially, fediverse right now is still mainly filled with American or European related topics.

      source
    • maplebar@lemmy.world ⁨3⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

Instead of “hoping your instance” does something, just make your own instance. That’s the whole idea.

      source
    • xigoi@lemmy.sdf.org ⁨3⁩ ⁨months⁩ ago

Or just don’t follow anyone there? Nobody is forcing you to read posts on any federated instance. I am shocked by the kind of egocentrism that leads you to think that if you don’t like people on a given instance, you should prevent everyone else on your instance from interacting with them.

it’s an old microblogging platform, was popular around Myspace era but still has a decent base. it’s mostly fandom stuff, art and porn… i personally like following artists on there

Tumblr was a lot of fun. Yes it is a microblogging platform, but that doesn’t explain what the appeal was. I have no idea what the appeal is today as I left in 2015.

People would share text or image or links of things they liked, and if you reblogged it (shared to your own blog) the comment you added would be retained when someone reblogged your reblog, creating lusicrous chains of conversations that people would build and build on. They evwntually became unreadable because they got squashed into one line. There was no way to comment without reblogging.

Tumblr predates influencer culture, and tumblr celebrities were not really a thing (except for maybe @pizza by accident being tagged everywhere).

You also had a tag system, where you added hashtags to reblogs that were searchable. This way you would find topics you liked, ans blogs.

The blogs had custom CSS, with graphics and music playing but less free for all than MySpace. This made some blogs into minor art pieces, along with the things they reblogged.

For me the initial appeal was high def images. Instagram had not taken off, and so finding consisten high quality images of art, nature, sub culture and pop culture imagery or artists, porn etc. was not as obvious as it is today.

I loved tumblr but eventually got bored. Eventually they killed custom CSS and porn, and basically made tumblr worthless for anyone who wasn’t into fandoms (/s but kind of not. I have no idea what happens on tumblr today).

As with the fediverse, there are a lot of user curated blacklists to get rid of the problem children.

Just don’t trust shinigamieyes, that shit got taken over by terfs a few years back and now lists a lot of innocent trans bloggers.

thebadspace has no real rhyme or reason either and lists a lot of folks I think are fine, and also gives (almost) no reason or receipts.
