Time to find a new VPS host.
Is this some new money laundering thing? Are companies “buying in” to hobnob with other wealthy people? Is this just the latest Country Club or whatever?
I seriously don’t understand why all these companies are throwing money at a project that is almost assuredly going to “mismanage” it.
If I had to guess, this is the techbro/epstein crew trying to get a foothold in Linux. The writing is on the wall; Windows is dead, and they want to funnel the migration into their new Omarchy ecosystem. They’ll probably start advertising bigly once Kushner and MBS invest.
Windows isn’t dead, anyone that actually believes that is lying to themselves.
They are too ingrained in business. Yes a couple countries will save a couple billion over the next several years getting off it but that is nothing to the 90 billion MS made in the past 3 months.
Isn’t Omarchy built on top of Arch Linux? I wonder what sort of effect it will have on Arch to have companies injecting millions into this downstream project?
My bet is that the tech bros hang in the same bar, and they’re just doing that for fun, and they don’t really care about the plebes not getting it.
Glad I left Digital Ocean like almost a decade ago, yet it still feels I’ve been with them for too long.

Separating the art from the artist is not a black and white thing…Like a lot of people worked on the harry potter movies and many people fell in love with those before reading the books, and when Rowling went anti-trans, you could reasonably argue that the films were a collaborative work that you can still love. But this? A pre-configured Arch made by one guy who makes his headline presence maligning minorities? I don’t see how giving money to him is anything other than a company saying his views are explicitly endorsed by the donor.

I think after initial hyprland success showing what’s possible, more similar window managers and desktop environments cropped up and that is the real benefit for all of us and that happened without omarchy. I’m currently on mango + DMS and I think it’s better than hyprland.

Anyone have any recommendations?
I use GreenCloudVPS for a bunch of things. They used to have VPSes starting at $15/year for 2GB RAM and 20GB disk, but their current budget deals are still good (starts at $25/year for 4GB RAM and 35GB disk). These are on older hardware (mostly AMD EPYC Rome Zen 2 systems, ~5 years old) which is why they haven’t been affected by increased RAM and storage prices yet.

They also have “premium” plans which are newer (AMD EPYC Milan Zen 3 or Genoa Zen 4, and PCIe 4.0 NVMe storage in RAID10): greencloudvps.com/billing/store/premium-kvm-sale
I suspect they’ll eventually increase the pricing, but I’ve been using them for five years and haven’t seen them increase pricing for existing customers, just new customers.
HostHatch is good too. Their regular pricing aims to compete with Hetzner, but in 13 locations worldwide. hosthatch.com/products. They do sometimes have sales on LowEndTalk with pricing similar to GreenCloud’s “premium” plans.
If you want to stick to big names, OVHcloud and Hetzner both have pretty good VPS pricing. OVH runs theirs on very old hardware like Haswell (2014/2015 era) Xeon E5 CPUs which is the main reason why they have cheaper pricing that Hetzner.
If you’re using AWS for anything, they have a service called Lightsail that’s essentially Amazon’s version of a VPS. Storage and data transfer are included in the monthly price (unlike EC2).

Only downside is that they were acquired a little while ago by a publicly traded company, so the likwlyhood of enshitification is higher.

That sounds like terrible reliability. If my home lab had an outage like that I would shut it down as I clearly don’t know how to run a dependable system. 😅

I dont like Omarcy and DHH but its pretty obvious why hes getting the funding and not other projects. The reason this gets funded and stuff like Gnome and KDE doesnt is because DHH has influence, he isnt a foss purist and he has no bureaucracy holding him back.
No one cares when KDE makes a post trying to drive linux adoption. When DHH does it drives thousands of new linux users. DHH alone can market the distro to new people in a way most foss projects cant.
When a company tries to partner with another project not only do they get very little exposure because the community is small and resistant to advertising but they also often get attacked and purity tested by the users and it generates bad press. When DHH partners with a company his users think its cool and try out the product. It doesnt matter how scummy the company is or if its closed source subscription only.
Investors also see Omachy as something where changes can be made without needing 4 years of arguing with one guy rejecting every change. A fast moving tech focused platform with a good marketer could pull people out of the microsoft apple ecosystem to a place where products can freely compete without entrenched platforms stealing their idea and making their version the default

The whole argument doesn’t hold up either. Your company - or the people behind it, if it’s new - just can’t be known as the usual profit-driven asshole. I mean, look at how the relations between the Community and Valve is. Nobody would argue Valve being perfect, but they’re known not to be the usual assholes and thereby cautiously welcome.
If you or your company can’t deal with society being vigilant (especially in capitalism) then they’ve no place in said society. This vigilance is the only reason Linux still feels made for the user(advanced ones, but still). Fuck anyone who wants to destroy that with means of accelerationism and alike.
DHH and Omarchy are just cultural cancer. What you correctly described is basically one aspect of how unfettered capitalism manipulates people and destroys healthy communities for the sake of growth.
