The confluence of the power streams has put life in these old thrusters
LillyPip@lemmy.ca 10 months ago
Hey man, this is a Christian server.
Hagdos@lemmy.world 10 months ago
I worked on solar racing cars as a student. The main race crosses outback Australia. One of the questions we often got: Does it have A/C?
No, no it doesn’t. A/C uses about as much power as all of the solar cells on the car deliver. We can either move, or power an A/C-unit.
Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 10 months ago
Isn’t the outback pretty hot? Think I would channel that power to the A/C and the radio and just include legholes.
khannie@lemmy.world 10 months ago
Yabba dabba dooo!
The_Picard_Maneuver@startrek.website 10 months ago
That sounds like a hell of an awesome project
Hagdos@lemmy.world 10 months ago
It is!
ThrowawayPermanente@sh.itjust.works 10 months ago
We run the A/C until the car is cool, then we move. The rest of the crew is with me on this.
someguy3@lemmy.world 10 months ago
So what do you do? Ice vest?
Rednax@lemmy.world 10 months ago
Jup. They do that. After an edition of the challenge where someone fainted and crashed due to the heat, they also added regulations for airflow. It might be hot outside-air, but that is still way better than inside-over air.
Hagdos@lemmy.world 10 months ago
Sometimes, but they only work for so long. Mostly just bring plenty water and power through. Every stint is about 4 hours of driving, and then drivers change.
DannyBoy@sh.itjust.works 10 months ago
Hope you don’t need a fire suit!
Cort@lemmy.world 10 months ago
What about an evaporative cooler?
Hagdos@lemmy.world 10 months ago
Either too heavy (these vehicles are below 200kg) or it doesnt work long enough. Or you’re now hot and humid, which is worse than hot and dry
EdibleFriend@lemmy.world 10 months ago
He would say divert you uncultured Philistine!
amansman@lemmy.world 10 months ago
He would also omit “the”. C’mon now
LordKitsuna@lemmy.world 10 months ago
Yes thank you, I was worried I would be the only one bothered by this
originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com 10 months ago
ive lived this in a 3 cylinder geo metro that for some ungodly reason had air conditioning. i loved that car.
soylentgreed@lemmy.world 10 months ago
I used to have a 2000 Honda insight that I ripped the hybrid battery out of and just drove it on the 3 cylinders. That thing was geared so high I would drive up hills flooring it in 2nd gear at like 35 mph. 5th gear basically never got used unless I needed to go 85 mph+
Fun car that stranded me only a couple times lol. The “replacement” hybrid battery was an Arduino spliced into the wiring harness to trick the car computer that everything was okay. Felt like some real ghetto cyberpunk shit driving that thing around.
FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 10 months ago
They don’t sell too many little cars like the Metro in the U.S. anymore. Sad really.
Bishma@discuss.tchncs.de 10 months ago
I had a similar car, the 1990 Ford Escort Pony. It had a hamster for an engine, but it was fine because the body was a shoebox.
RaoulDook@lemmy.world 10 months ago
Haha I didn’t think people still retained that ancient knowledge of motoring success. The good ole days of weak 4-cylinder cars and trucks, when you’d disengage the AC to get more power to go up a hill or something. I’ve met several people who didn’t know it was even a thing.
Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 10 months ago
I mean, crappy 4 cylinder cars are still a thing.
RaoulDook@lemmy.world 10 months ago
Yes of course they are, but modern 4-cylinder engines have advanced a lot since the old days of last century’s engines.
Today it’s not hard to find a 4-cylinder that can put out 100 horsepower per liter, or even more. They can pull that little car up the hill with the AC on full blast.
someguy3@lemmy.world 10 months ago
I mean most cars are 4 cylinder. (Aren’t they?)
psud@lemmy.world 10 months ago
Most modern 4 cyl cars are better than old ones. The engines are more powerful and the car lighter
cheesymoonshadow@lemmings.world 10 months ago
I still do it on our 2011 Subaru when merging onto a highway.
possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 10 months ago
Subaru’s are a meme
brianorca@lemmy.world 10 months ago
Many more recent cars will do this automatically at high throttle conditions, such as acceleration to pass.
RaoulDook@lemmy.world 10 months ago
Far out
possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 10 months ago
That’s still a thing for old cars like mine.
southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 10 months ago
Jfc, I thought I was the only one geeky enough to not only do that, but admit it in public
thefattman@beehaw.org 10 months ago
This is literally my brother in his electric truck on the highway trying to eek out a bit more range
1993_toyota_camry@beehaw.org 10 months ago
Not important, but in case you didn’t know – In that usage the word is ‘eke’. ‘Eek!’ is the sound you make when someone jumps out from a closet wearing a spider mask.
stratosfear@lemmy.sdf.org 10 months ago
Or when a spider jumps out from a closet wearing a person mask
aaaaaaadjsf@hexbear.net 10 months ago
I feel this, used to drive a 70 horsepower car, overtaking on South African roads with that was a struggle.
1993_toyota_camry@beehaw.org 10 months ago
My car does this automatically. If you floor it, the vents start blowing hot air.
It does make me wonder how much it really helps.
ccdfa@lemm.ee 10 months ago
Like the vents start blowing hot air or the ac shuts off temporarily? If the former, then your ac probably just can’t keep up with the extra heat in the engine
acockworkorange@mander.xyz 10 months ago
Several cars disable the AC compressor when they detect that you’re flooring it. This removes the mechanical load from the engine, releasing a bit more power to the wheels for as long as you’re balls to the wall.
xkforce@lemmy.world 10 months ago
ReverendIrreverence@lemmy.ml 10 months ago
I do that going up long, steep grades when the truck is fully loaded
ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 10 months ago
Or how about when a car is overheating and you turn on the heater for that extra bit of heat capacity?
Anticorp@lemmy.world 10 months ago
I regret to inform you that I have experience with this in the middle of summer.
Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 months ago
I’ve been there friend, it’s pretty shitty
akilou@sh.itjust.works 10 months ago
Of course! That’s when the engine is going to over heat. If you’re hot, they’re hot
acockworkorange@mander.xyz 10 months ago
Drivert auxiliary power from life support to plasma coolant.
gst0ck@lemm.ee 10 months ago
Drivert in this context has got to be the best trypo.
