- Comment on TikTok sues to block prospective US app ban 1 week ago:
#1. The CCCP is Soviet Russia. #2. The requirement is that Bytedance sells tiktok (along with it’s proprietary algorithms) to a US based company.
- Comment on Windows 10 reaches 70% market share as Windows 11 keeps declining 2 weeks ago:
I would much rather pay for windows than become the product with ads, AI, and analytics.
Luckily this is coming at a time where I can run nearly everything on Linux that I previously needed Windows for (with the exception of a handful of games in my steam library)
- Comment on Updating California’s grid for EVs may cost up to $20 billion 3 weeks ago:
That’s not the only new kid on the block. AI and blockchain eat tons of electricity.
- Comment on Biden expected to sign the TikTok ban on Wed. 3 weeks ago:
There is a whole class of “influencers” that get paid to shill for everything from liquor to policy on every platform. Tiktok, a foreign company, owns the algorithm, so they can promote whatever they want.
This all seems sketchy, but then I recall citizens united and the fact that billions are spent directly purchasing influence in the actual government. They just don’t like some other entity putting their finger on the scale.
I’d much prefer systematic reform where money can’t buy influence and companies (US or otherwise) can’t spy on their users, yet that will never be on the table because of the money and power Facebook and others have.
- Comment on Google Contract Shows Deal With Israel Defense Ministry 5 weeks ago:
I’ve been thinking about it for a long time. I’ll probably never be able to completely separate due to the number of accounts linked to it, but I’ve been eyeing Proton or similar paid privacy focused offerings.
- Comment on FCC won’t block California net neutrality law, says states can “experiment” 1 month ago:
There is nothing about net neutrality in either the constitution or the bible. Clearly something like this shouldn’t be done.
- Comment on Roku explores taking over HDMI feeds with ads 1 month ago:
I’m done with Roku. I have one in every room, but they all need to go.
- Comment on Users ditch Glassdoor, stunned by site adding real names without consent 1 month ago:
Some are much more capable of disguising it during the interview process.
In the tech industry around the pandemic there was the great resignation and companies were tripping over themselves to employ as many people as possible. It was great then because you had so many options and they were all seemingly similar job descriptions.
Now the site is shitty and getting a job is terrible. Woo capitalism!
- Comment on IRS has launched its free tax filing service, Direct File, in 12 states 2 months ago:
The problem is that companies like Intuit have resources/lobbyists and really want to maintain their position in the market.

Your system sounds wonderful though.

Nowadays it’s llm powered bots all the way down.
- Comment on How do you manage your server files? 2 months ago:
It’s not very sexy, but I just use SFTP and filezilla. Filezilla is available for all the major operating systems, and an ssh server is basically required anyways.
- Comment on Cisco to lay off more than 4,000 employees to focus on artificial intelligence 2 months ago:
One of my friends is a developer there, they knew vaguely it was going to happen after a town hall meeting, but didn’t know who was going to make the cut.
- Comment on Cisco to lay off more than 4,000 employees to focus on artificial intelligence 2 months ago:
Their stocks are going up with every layoff and costs are going down. It’s working marvelously for the executives.
Is it sustainable? God I hope not.
- Comment on Mozilla lays off 60 people, wants to build AI into Firefox 2 months ago:
I hate that they are laying people off. I do however want to use some machine learning powered adblock, for those harder to block ads, otherwise I don’t feel like every app needs an AI assistant. It’s bad for the Internet generally and for the power grid.
- Comment on Tipping culture npcs 2 months ago:
Service has gotten worse at many places. The servers are still great, but quite a few places have adopted the model of having you scan a QR code, you order online, pay with your credit card plus tip, they have you pick it up at a window, you eat, and at the end you bus your own table. Then they have options like 18, 25 and 30% to guilt you into the middle one. It’s like, damn I haven’t even talked to anyone yet, you’re jumping to the end first
- Comment on It's that time of year again 2 months ago:
The red squiggle instantly caught my eye, followed by the terrible indentation. Then I noticed the class is called Main without a public static void main method, odd. Wait and Love is a string now?
Then I realized I too was saddened like Biden at this code snippet, so I guess in the end it redeemed itself
- Comment on Are there any games like Diablo but not Diablo because Diablo? 2 months ago:
I loved Diablo 2 the most, and Torchlight scratches the same itch.

- Comment on Really shows where their priorities are, doesn't it? 6 months ago:
I’m also going to get down voted to hell, but I feel like pants and a shirt without a pouch or hood isn’t asking too much.
They don’t have to be expensive clothes, but when I worked in retail I had to wear khakis and a nice shirt. it seems like an elected representative would dress better than a cashier at Walmart.
- Comment on Best Buy to end DVD & Blu-ray disc sales 7 months ago:
They have a good business selling appliances, electronics, and computers. I think where they really make their money is on the extended warranties and services. It makes me sad they don’t have media anymore, but most everyone streams these days.
- Comment on Microsoft completes $69bn takeover of Call of Duty-maker Activision Blizzard 7 months ago:
I grew up on Blizzard and Activision games, but the good feelings and nostalgia wore off when they started treating beloved franchises like DLC piggy banks.
- Comment on Is there something better than SQL? 7 months ago:
SQL has been around and evolving since the 70s. It is an ISO/IEC standard and is portable across a multitude of databases.
- Comment on Is there something better than SQL? 7 months ago:
SQL is a great tool to have in your toolbox. From creating adhoc reports to building any kind of backend, it always seems to come in handy.
There are obviously non relational databases available and other approaches to persisting information, but there are some desirable characteristics of traditional relational databases.
Oftentimes I find if I’m struggling it is because of a missing abstraction. Views, functions, etc. are available to extract higher level ideas and remove duplication.
- Comment on In a leaked memo, Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke put limits on employees having side hustles, saying Shopify requires 'unshared attention' 7 months ago:
That’s so wild. A smart company would be begging their employees to learn how to solve new problems on the weekend for fun. Intellectually curious people are exactly who you want.
The only way this would make sense would be if you signed an NDA or something that would prevent you from participating in the specific hackathon, because secrets.
