- Comment on DOJ to ask judge to force Google to sell off Chrome, Bloomberg reports 2 days ago:
This seems like a sensible consumer protection to not let the ad company control the biggest web browser. I won’t hold my breath, but I’m glad they are trying something.
AWS should also be split from Amazon.

- Comment on Using AI generated code will make you a bad programmer. 4 weeks ago:
I’ve been writing code professionally for nearly two decades, and I love having copilot available in my IDE. When there is some boilerplate or a SQL query I just don’t want to write, it’ll oftentimes get me started with something reasonable that is wrong in a couple of subtle ways. I then fix it, laugh at how wrong it was, or use part of the proposed answer in my project.
If you’re a non-corder, sure it is pure danger, but if you know what you’re doing it can give you a little boost. Only time will tell if it makes me rusty on some basics, but it is another tool in the toolbox now.

- Comment on Reddit is making sitewide protests basically impossible 1 month ago:
The other option is for all the mods to quit. AI can probably do a lot of basic tasks, but without mods they wouldn’t have a site pretty quickly.

Sorry i misunderstood, thanks for clarifying!
- Comment on Amazon tech workers leaving for other jobs in response to return to office mandate 1 month ago:
These tech workers are not Bezos. They are just developers and technical people that thought they had a good job with competitive salaries. It sucks they have to uproot their lives because management is being shitty.
They may work for a company without ethics, but that’s kind of the corporate landscape these days.

Either turn off the gas if you can safely do it, or call your gas company so they can shut off the supply to your house.
- Comment on LG TVs start showing ads on screensavers | LG's TV business is heightening focus on selling ads and tracking 1 month ago:
I was always torn over what TV brand to buy. This helps narrow it down further.
- Comment on Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered releases October 31 with the PlayStation Overlay 1 month ago:
This is a great series. If you haven’t played yet this would probably be worth picking up (well ignoring the overlay implications).
I have no plans to revisit the game so soon, so I’ll pass until the whole game and dlc is $5 in a steam summer sale; years from now.

My poor Smart TV thinks I don’t have an Internet connection.

I usually do some goofy math like cost / uses. The first time I used a $300 washing machine I considered that a $300+ load of laundry, next time we’re down to $150, and so on.
For a song I’d probably at least want a few dozen plays out of it for $1, although nowadays everyone just subscribes and streams.

The novelty of Alexa wore off so quickly. Once the “maybe I shouldn’t hook a microphone provided by a corporation in my home” thought crossed my mind I got rid of all of them.
- Comment on ChatGPT’s much-heralded Mac app was storing conversations as plain text 4 months ago:
So many apps use sqlite or json files for storage without encryption; this doesn’t seem like much of a discovery.
In any case, don’t share PII or any of your deepest, darkest secrets with it.
- Comment on VPN by Google One shuts down 4 months ago:
I get on my VPN to provide less data to Google. Routing my traffic through an advertising company always felt like a bad idea to me.

It’s probably the best place for funnel insertion at the end of the day. A hole left behind there is appropriate, you don’t want to mess with any details you might get from the face, and it’s way funnier this way.
- Comment on TikTok sues to block prospective US app ban 6 months ago:
#1. The CCCP is Soviet Russia. #2. The requirement is that Bytedance sells tiktok (along with it’s proprietary algorithms) to a US based company.
- Comment on Windows 10 reaches 70% market share as Windows 11 keeps declining 6 months ago:
I would much rather pay for windows than become the product with ads, AI, and analytics.
Luckily this is coming at a time where I can run nearly everything on Linux that I previously needed Windows for (with the exception of a handful of games in my steam library)
- Comment on Updating California’s grid for EVs may cost up to $20 billion 6 months ago:
That’s not the only new kid on the block. AI and blockchain eat tons of electricity.
- Comment on Biden expected to sign the TikTok ban on Wed. 6 months ago:
There is a whole class of “influencers” that get paid to shill for everything from liquor to policy on every platform. Tiktok, a foreign company, owns the algorithm, so they can promote whatever they want.
This all seems sketchy, but then I recall citizens united and the fact that billions are spent directly purchasing influence in the actual government. They just don’t like some other entity putting their finger on the scale.
I’d much prefer systematic reform where money can’t buy influence and companies (US or otherwise) can’t spy on their users, yet that will never be on the table because of the money and power Facebook and others have.
- Comment on Google Contract Shows Deal With Israel Defense Ministry 7 months ago:
I’ve been thinking about it for a long time. I’ll probably never be able to completely separate due to the number of accounts linked to it, but I’ve been eyeing Proton or similar paid privacy focused offerings.
- Comment on FCC won’t block California net neutrality law, says states can “experiment” 7 months ago:
There is nothing about net neutrality in either the constitution or the bible. Clearly something like this shouldn’t be done.

- Comment on Users ditch Glassdoor, stunned by site adding real names without consent 8 months ago:
Some are much more capable of disguising it during the interview process.
In the tech industry around the pandemic there was the great resignation and companies were tripping over themselves to employ as many people as possible. It was great then because you had so many options and they were all seemingly similar job descriptions.
Now the site is shitty and getting a job is terrible. Woo capitalism!

The problem is that companies like Intuit have resources/lobbyists and really want to maintain their position in the market.
